NFL training camp opening: Moton hits NFI, LaPorta clears, Patriots add three list designations
A July 15-22 camp-opening tracker for fantasy managers: Sam LaPorta is fully cleared, Taylor Moton and Ikem Ekwonu create Panthers line uncertainty, Makai Lemon is trending toward camp, and new PUP/NFI entries need monitoring rather than game-day labels.
The camp report is the injury report for now
Training camp is opening across the league, but the regular-season injury-report system is not active yet. The NFL's 2026 calendar places the regular-season Practice Report and Game Status Report in the September 6-12 window, so there are no current Out, Doubtful, or Questionable tags to apply to a July draft-room decision. 1
For this July 15-22 board, the useful labels are different: cleared for camp, expected to miss the opening, PUP, NFI, or still waiting on team-drill work. The biggest actionable change is positive for Sam LaPorta, while Carolina's offensive-line health creates the week's most important lineup uncertainty.
Fast fantasy decisions
- Move Sam LaPorta back toward his pre-injury price. LaPorta was fully cleared for training camp after last season's microdiscectomy for a herniated disk. He played nine games and finished with 40 catches, 489 yards, and three touchdowns, so the medical discount can come off his draft range. The first camp practices still matter for workload, but there is no reported restriction to carry into rankings today. 2
- Apply a modest Panthers offense discount, not a blanket fade. Right tackle Taylor Moton will open camp on the reserve/non-football injury list after a blood clot in his lung and is expected to miss regular-season time. Left tackle Ikem Ekwonu is also likely to miss at least the start of camp while recovering from a ruptured patellar tendon. Carolina has Rasheed Walker competing at left tackle, while rookie Monroe Freeling could see work at right tackle. That is enough to lower confidence in early offensive efficiency, but it is not a confirmed change to Bryce Young, Chuba Hubbard, or any pass-catcher's role. 3 4
- Add Makai Lemon to the rookie watchlist, not the confirmed-start list. The Eagles rookie missed mandatory minicamp with a hamstring injury but told the team he was feeling great and expected to be fully ready when Philadelphia reports on July 28. A.J. Brown's departure creates opportunity, but Lemon still has to earn a stable route share beside DeVonta Smith. 5
- Keep Cam Skattebo in the upside tier, with one condition. John Harbaugh said Skattebo is healthy, ready to roll, and expected at practice. That is a stronger current signal than a general recovery projection, but it still needs to become repeated team and padded work before an RB1 price is justified. 6
Confirmed camp statuses and lineup effects
| Player | Confirmed status | Lineup or fantasy read |
|---|---|---|
| Cam Skattebo, Giants RB | Harbaugh said he is healthy, ready to roll, and expected to practice. 6 | Keep him in the RB2/upside range. Upgrade again if the Giants give him normal team-drill and contact work across consecutive practices. |
| Taylor Moton, Panthers RT | Reserve/NFI to open camp after a lung blood clot. He is on blood thinners, is being assessed daily, and is expected to miss the start of the regular season but return during the year. 3 | Treat Carolina's right-tackle plan as unsettled. Do not promote a replacement to locked-in starter status until the Panthers publish the camp rotation. |
| Ikem Ekwonu, Panthers LT | Likely to miss at least the start of camp after a ruptured right patellar tendon; no return timetable was provided. 3 | Rasheed Walker is the clearest left-tackle replacement candidate, with Monroe Freeling also in the mix. Use a small protection discount on Panthers skill players until the line settles. |
| Sam LaPorta, Lions TE | Fully cleared for camp earlier in July after a microdiscectomy for a herniated disk. 2 | Remove the back-surgery fade from his draft profile. Check the first practice workload before assuming a full return to his prior route volume. |
| Makai Lemon, Eagles WR | Missed June minicamp with a hamstring injury and is expected to be fully ready for Philadelphia's July 28 reporting and first practice. 5 | The A.J. Brown trade gives him a path to useful snaps, but he remains a rookie role bet. Track first-team reps and red-zone packages before moving him into a weekly start range. |
| Harold Landry, Patriots edge | Placed on PUP and cannot practice at the opening of camp after a knee issue limited his spring work. 7 | Lower confidence in the Patriots' early pass-rush and team-defense outlook. PUP is reversible during camp, so this is a watch flag rather than a season-long absence. |
| C.J. Dippre, Patriots TE | Placed on PUP despite participating in minicamp; he had been behind Hunter Henry and Jack Westover in the tight-end group. 7 | No change to Henry's starting role. Dippre is a deep-league watch only until he returns to practice. |
| Terrell Jennings, Patriots RB | Moved to the non-football injury/illness list and cannot practice at the start of camp. He worked as a part-time RB3 behind Rhamondre Stevenson and TreVeyon Henderson in minicamp. 7 | Do not change Stevenson or Henderson's projected roles based on this move alone. Jennings is a depth-chart monitor, not a waiver priority. |
| Kenny McIntosh, Seahawks RB | Placed on PUP on July 20. The league says players placed on PUP can return at any point during camp. 8 | No immediate Seattle backfield promotion follows from the designation. Wait for his activation and practice role before adjusting the depth chart. |
| Nick Emmanwori, Seahawks S | Placed on PUP on July 20; the report did not provide a return timeline. 8 | This is relevant to Seattle's defensive rotation, but there is not enough information for a meaningful IDP or D/ST projection change yet. |
| Deven Eastern, Seahawks NT | Placed on PUP; the July 18 report did not identify the injury or give a timeline. 9 | Keep the note on the defensive watchlist and stop there. An unexplained PUP entry cannot support a player-specific fantasy conclusion. |
How to read the first practice reports
PUP and NFI mean the player is not practicing at that moment. They do not mean the player is out for the season, and they are not equivalent to a Sunday game designation. The NFL's July 20 update explicitly notes that PUP players are eligible to return at any time during camp. 8
A full clearance is a meaningful upgrade, but it still leaves room for a managed rep count. LaPorta's first team drills will tell us whether "cleared" means a normal role immediately or simply medical permission to begin camp. The same distinction applies to Skattebo: the coach's statement clears the biggest uncertainty, while the practice rotation will determine the fantasy ceiling.
For Carolina, the important distinction is between a confirmed absence and an assumed replacement. Moton is expected to miss regular-season time. Ekwonu is likely to miss the start of camp. Walker and Freeling are candidates to fill the line, not yet confirmed starters. That should keep Panthers skill players on watch without turning a protection question into an automatic sit call.
Next checkpoints
- July 23: Carolina's first scheduled camp practice should show whether Walker and Freeling split left- and right-tackle work. 4
- July 25: New England's first practice follows the veterans' reporting window. Landry's activation status and the first defensive rotation are the useful signals. 7
- July 28: Philadelphia's camp report and first practice are the first real test of Lemon's hamstring clearance and his place in the receiver rotation. 5
- Every team: Separate individual drills, 7-on-7, team periods, and padded work. A player who appears in a social clip is not necessarily ready for a normal contact workload.
The current draft-room adjustments are straightforward: move LaPorta up from the back-injury discount, keep Skattebo in the upside bucket, hold Lemon as a high-interest rookie watch, and shave confidence from the Panthers offense until its tackle plan is visible. The PUP and NFI entries belong on tracking lists until activation or a real timeline changes the projection.
