Messi Watch: Spain end Argentina's title defense
Spain beat Argentina 1-0 after extra time in the World Cup final, ending Messi's bid for a second straight title while leaving his international future open.
Spain win the final
Spain beat Argentina 1-0 after extra time in the World Cup final, ending the defending champions' attempt to win consecutive titles. Ferran Torres scored in the 106th minute after Nico Williams headed Pedro Porro's cross into his path. Spain now have their second men's World Cup. 1
The result was built on control rather than a shootout. FIFA reported that Argentina did not register an attempt until extra time, while goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez made 11 saves before Torres finally broke through. 1
Messi's final-day line
Messi started his third World Cup final, becoming the first man to do so, and also became the oldest outfield player to start a final. His tournament ended with eight goals, two behind Kylian Mbappe in the Golden Boot race. 2
The final itself was unusually quiet for Argentina's No. 10. ESPN reported that Messi's blocked attempt in the 117th minute was Argentina's first shot of the match. Afterward, he summed up the result plainly: "They were better, to be honest." 2
Messi has not confirmed his future plans, so the next international question is still open. He leaves the tournament with 21 World Cup goals, one behind Mbappe's all-time record, but without the fourth star Argentina were chasing. 2
