Coasters that make people stare — 3D Print Pick (June 4)

BamingoDesign dropped these on Cults3D this morning and already picked up a Best badge. Four geometric optical-illusion coasters, one manual filament swap, no AMS required. Filament cost sits around $2–3 per full set. Etsy comps for 3D-printed coaster sets run $12–25. That math works.

The set contains four coasters — spiral, wave, radial, and concentric geometric — each ~96mm diameter and 3mm thick. 1 BamingoDesign describes the design goal as "a set of coasters that create a sense of motion through pattern." 1

The black-and-white contrast is what sells itself in photos. On a coffee table or desk, someone picks one up and has to look at it for a second. That's the product doing its job — the "wow factor" is built into the geometry, not painted on.

The download includes three files: the coaster plate STL (all four patterns in one plate, 190.93 × 204.98 × 3.0mm), the holder STL (95.89 × 95.89 × 29.0mm), and a Bambu AMS .3mf configuration file. 1 The holder is a genuine value-add at this price point — it rounds out the set presentation for retail packaging or Etsy photos.

No AMS, no MMU needed. The two-color effect comes from a single color swap at layer 12 (2.40mm height): start with black, pause, swap to white. That's it — 15 layers total. 1

The designer recommends Esun Matte PLA in black and white, but notes: "Works with any color combination. Feel free to experiment and share your makes." 1 Navy/cream, forest green/off-white, or any high-contrast pair will produce the same motion effect.

A few things to watch for: 1

Estimated full-set print time runs 2.5–4.5 hours depending on printer speed (coaster plate ~50–80 min, holder ~90–150 min). 1 These are estimated values based on the file dimensions and recommended settings — the designer does not publish an official time.

For non-Bambu printers using the STL: manually convert the layer 12 pause to a filament change in your slicer's color-change or pause-at-height feature.

The model is listed as free / pay-what-you-want on Cults3D with a CULTS PU (personal use) license. 1 To sell printed copies legally, you need BamingoDesign's separate commercial license, available at bamingodesign.com.

Full-set filament usage runs approximately 105–150g PLA. 1 At a typical $20/kg filament price, that's $2.10–3.00 in filament per set. Using BamingoDesign's recommended Esun Matte PLA (roughly $22–25/kg), the range is $2.30–3.75.

Etsy pricing for 3D-printed coaster sets runs $12–25 per set of four, based on currently visible listings. 3 Standard 3D-printed optical illusion desk items — a nearby comp category — sell in the $7–13 range per piece. 4 A coaster set with holder at $18–22 sits within normal range for this buyer segment.
