OpenAI Presence brings managed voice and chat agents to enterprise workflows

OpenAI Presence is a limited-GA enterprise platform for deploying governed voice and chat agents, with customer-controlled permissions, evaluations, and human escalation.

OpenAI is selling a managed agent layer for enterprise workflows

OpenAI launched OpenAI Presence on July 22, a deployed enterprise product for voice and chat agents that can answer questions, use company systems, take approved actions, and hand off to people when needed. The company says the platform is designed for customer support and internal workflows, with early examples including billing, insurance claims, and employee IT requests. 1 2

The product is the control system around the model

Presence starts each deployment with a specific job and limits the agent to the knowledge and system access required for that job. The customer sets permissions, policies, approval points, and escalation rules. OpenAI packages those controls with standard operating procedures, guardrails, approved actions, simulations, evaluation tools, and a Codex-powered improvement loop. Production sessions and human escalations can expose gaps; teams can test suggested changes against the live version and approve a controlled rollout. 1
That puts Presence closer to a managed deployment layer than to a standalone model release. OpenAI's broader enterprise platform pitch uses a similar structure: connect business context, run agents in production, evaluate them, and keep actions auditable. 3

What OpenAI says it has proven

OpenAI says Presence powers its English-language phone support channel at 1-888-GPT-0090. The company reports that the system now resolves 75% of inbound issues without human assistance, and that its improvement loop reduced human handoffs by 15 percentage points in 10 days. Those are OpenAI's own operational measurements, not independent benchmark results. 1
The launch also names three design partners. BBVA is exploring voice support for everyday banking in Mexico, SoftBank is testing Japanese-language customer conversations, and IAG is exploring support during high-demand events such as severe weather. These are exploration and testing programs, not evidence that Presence is broadly deployed at those companies. 1

Availability is deliberately narrow

Presence is available to eligible enterprise customers through a limited general availability program. Deployments are led by OpenAI Forward Deployed Engineers and select global systems integrators, and the product is not yet self-serve. OpenAI says existing voice customers can continue using frontier models through the API. 1 2
The significance is practical: enterprise agent adoption is shifting from choosing a model to governing a permissioned workflow over time. Presence addresses that operational layer, but the launch leaves an important question open. The strongest performance evidence so far comes from OpenAI's own support operation; outside customers will need to show whether the same control and improvement loop transfers across industries.
