The clearest Colombia signal is a solar-eclipse search

The current Google Trends Colombia snapshot contains one clear technology-and-environment match: eclipse solar del 12 de agosto de 2026, in the approximate 1,000+ searches band and marked active after appearing about 14 hours earlier. The page does not expose category-level rankings, so this is an attention signal, not a claim that the eclipse is Colombia's top environmental search. 1

The search is about a real astronomical event. NASA says the August 12, 2026 eclipse will be total along a path crossing Greenland, Iceland, northern Russia, the Atlantic, Spain and a small part of Portugal. The total eclipse will not be visible from Colombia; a separate visibility check lists Colombia's next visible eclipse as the partial lunar eclipse of August 27-28. 2 3

That distinction matters. A Colombian search spike can reflect curiosity, travel planning or people checking whether they can see the event, but the Trends page does not explain the reason. For anyone traveling to the eclipse path, NASA recommends certified solar viewers that meet ISO 12312-2 during partial phases. Ordinary sunglasses are not safe, and cameras, telescopes and binoculars need a solar filter mounted at the front of the instrument. 4

The bigger environmental development is Colombia's El Niño response

The same snapshot arrives as the national government announces a much more consequential climate decision. After an extraordinary meeting of the National Risk Management Council on July 21, President Gustavo Petro said the government had approved a national disaster declaration to prepare for an imminent, potentially very strong El Niño. The decree that would formalize the declaration had not yet been published when El Espectador reported the decision, so the status should be read as an announced approval pending the legal instrument. 5

The first announced financial measure is a transfer of COP 4 trillion from the national budget to the National Unit for Disaster Risk Management, UNGRD, for prevention and preparation. The government also called for faster implementation of the Colombia Solar program, which is intended to add household solar capacity as hydroelectric availability could fall under drier conditions. Those are policy actions and instructions, not evidence that the projected impacts have already occurred. 5

The scientific basis is a forecast, not a short-term weather report. IDEAM says there is an 81% probability that El Niño reaches a "very strong" intensity in October, November and December 2026, and more than 97% probability that the conditions persist into the first quarter of 2027. It expects the main pressure points to include lower rainfall, higher temperatures, reduced river flows, water supplies, agriculture, hydropower and wildfire risk across parts of the Caribbean, Andean and Pacific regions. 6

The response also has an energy-security side. A report on the council meeting says Petro ordered Ecopetrol to authorize gas imports immediately, arguing that contract and procurement timelines could otherwise push deliveries beyond December and put hospitals and other critical facilities at risk late in 2026. This is a reported presidential order, not proof that a national supply shortage has already begun. 7

The technology angle is measurable clean-energy capacity

The policy response is landing alongside a new energy-transition milestone. UPME reported that clean sources made up more than 74% of Colombia's installed electricity capacity, while solar and wind capacity reached 4,626.73 MW as of July 17. That is installed capacity, not the share of electricity generated on a particular day, and it does not remove the need to manage hydropower and gas risk during a dry period. 8

This is why the technology and environment strands belong in the same watch, but should not be collapsed into one claim. The eclipse search is about attention to an astronomical event. Colombia Solar, solar and wind capacity, gas imports and hydropower planning are responses to a climate-and-energy risk. One does not prove the other.

Bogotá's weather check is still a separate, local item

For Wednesday, the city forecast calls for mostly dry conditions during the early morning, with skies ranging from partly cloudy to mostly cloudy and a minimum temperature near 10°C. It does not provide a full-day national forecast. Bogotá directs residents to Sistema Alerta Bogotá for citywide information and to the rainfall layer in Mapas Bogotá for a location-specific check. 9

That makes the forecast useful for a morning decision, but it should not be presented as a Colombia-wide search ranking or an all-day rain guarantee. Short-term rain and a longer-term drying risk can coexist in the same country, and the official sources here describe different time scales.
