A male seahorse can give birth by bending, pressing, and jerking his body until the brood-pouch opening gapes and hundreds of babies spill out. In pot-bellied seahorses, isotocin did not make the pouch tissue contract; researchers found scattered pouch smooth muscle and larger skeletal muscles near the opening, so those muscles plus body movement may help expel the young. The muscle-control explanation remains a hypothesis awaiting biomechanical tests. 12
