This week's budget trip math: Cartagena is the $317 route to price first

A current fare screen puts Fort Lauderdale–Cartagena at $317 roundtrip; this issue compares that route with four fresh trend-and-value picks and shows what five nights actually costs.

A $317 roundtrip ticket can still lose to a $662 fare once five nights of ground costs enter the calculation. Cartagena is the cleanest route to price first this week, but Kuala Lumpur shows why a cheap bed can matter more than a cheap-looking headline fare.
All current route screens below were collected August 18, 2026. They are roundtrip economy searches from the named U.S. airport, generally for one adult with zero bags. KAYAK route pages use recent searches and availability can change quickly. Treat the numbers as buy thresholds and comparison points, not guaranteed quotes.

Three fare bands

"Premium window" means a higher airfare window, not a premium-cabin ticket.
BandCurrent screenWhat to do
Value corridor: under $350Miami–Mérida at $209, typical $244–$525; Boston–San Diego at $252, typical $263–$494; Fort Lauderdale–Cartagena at $317, typical $312–$413. (KAYAK Mérida, KAYAK San Diego, KAYAK Cartagena)Price these first if the airport is convenient. Check baggage rules before calling the fare a bargain.
Middle ground: $350–$600Houston–Belize City at $385, typical $489–$679; Washington, D.C.–Lima at $476, typical $468–$615; Boston–San Salvador at $511, typical $436–$789. (KAYAK Belize City, KAYAK Lima, KAYAK San Salvador)This is the practical zone for a five-night international trip. Compare the ticket with the room before booking.
Premium window: $650+Los Angeles–Seoul at $652, typical $683–$1,031; Los Angeles–Kuala Lumpur at $662, typical $669–$883; New York–Bari at $830, typical $792–$956. (KAYAK Seoul, KAYAK Kuala Lumpur, KAYAK Bari)Buy when the destination's ground costs or a longer stay can justify the higher entry price.
The first lesson is airport-specific: a $209 Miami–Mérida search and a $317 Fort Lauderdale–Cartagena search are useful only to travelers who can reach those airports cheaply. The second is total-trip math. The fare is the first line of the budget, not the whole decision.

Ten international fare targets

Going's July 13, 2026 international-deal guide ranks these destinations using deal prices from 2025 and 2026. The ranges below are the sample U.S.-origin economy deals shown in that guide; the average is Going's historical average deal, not a live August quote. Use the table to set alerts, then verify the route and dates before buying.
DestinationSample U.S. roundtrip deal rangeGoing average dealRead it as
Calgary$129–$144$241The lowest historical average in this group; useful from western and central hubs. (Going)
Vancouver$124–$155$255Short-haul competition creates frequent deal alerts. (Going)
Guatemala City$159–$248$268A low-entry Central America search with Antigua and Lake Atitlán nearby. (Going)
San José, Costa Rica$185–$222$333Search both Costa Rica gateways before assuming San José is cheaper. (Going)
Punta Cana$220–$247$336High route volume keeps the deal floor competitive, but resort costs change the total. (Going)
Bogotá$238–$285$302A strong South America alert target when the origin airport is flexible. (Going)
Liberia, Costa Rica$196–$282$343The Pacific coast gateway can beat San José for Guanacaste trips. (Going)
Montego Bay$240–$278$344Frequent U.S. service creates a real deal floor, while resorts can erase it. (Going)
Tokyo$353–$589$732A high sticker price can still be a deep discount against normal Japan fares. (Going)
Auckland$453–$550$793Treat the deal as a long-haul trigger, not a weekend fare. (Going)
The sample ranges and averages answer different questions. A sample range tells you what Going has actually sent from U.S. airports; the historical average shows the price level at which an alert is worth your attention. Neither is a promise that the same fare exists today.

Five current trend-and-value screens

Going's April 15, 2026 Where To Go list names Cartagena and Seoul because new routes and stronger competition are making them easier to reach. The other three rows use the current value signals in Going's July 23 Europe budget guide and its Asia budget guide, updated February 17. This is a trend-and-value screen, not a popularity ranking.
Each subtotal assumes five nights, five days of food, one traveler, and a budget room. It includes only the flight, accommodation, and food. It excludes local transport, activities, baggage, airport transfers, resort fees, taxes, and currency swings. Where a source gives a country-level price or a floor rather than a city average, the table keeps that limitation visible.
DestinationFlight screenFive-night roomFive-day foodFlight + room + food
Cartagena, Colombia$317 from FLL$150–$250$60–$120$527–$687
Seoul, South Korea$652 from LAX$75–$150$90–$150$817–$952
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia$662 from LAX$200$75–$90$937–$952
Tirana, Albania$406 best recent roundtrip from NYC$100+$75–$150$581+
Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina$809 from MSY$75+$75–$180$959+
Cartagena is the only row where the current fare and the ground-cost band both sit in a near-weekend range. Seoul and Kuala Lumpur are cheaper on the ground than their tickets suggest, while Sarajevo's low country-level prices cannot rescue an $809 Gulf Coast departure. The airport still decides the winner.

Booking timing that fits these routes

  1. Start international searches two to eight months out. Going's July 31, 2026 booking guide gives that window for international flights and says peak travel, holidays, and major events deserve an earlier start. Prices usually rise during the final three weeks, so last-minute bargains should be treated as exceptions.
  2. Test September and October before committing to late summer. Going identifies January and February as the cheapest months overall, with September and October also strong. Route-specific KAYAK screens point to different local floors: Cartagena shows February as its cheapest month with a 33% drop, Seoul's route page suggests booking three weeks ahead can save about 6%, and Kuala Lumpur shows February with a 16% drop. Those are route signals, not guarantees.
  3. Move the departure day before chasing a booking-day myth. Going finds Tuesday, Wednesday, and Saturday departures tend to be cheaper. The day you click "buy" matters far less than your lead time, so use a whole-month calendar and compare nearby airports before waiting for a particular weekday.
  4. Use each route's own lead-time clue. KAYAK says Fort Lauderdale–Cartagena travelers who book at least two weeks ahead save around 6%. Its Houston–Belize City page says six weeks ahead can save around 26%. These estimates are more useful for an alert threshold than a universal rule, but they are still based on recent-search behavior.
  5. Set alerts at a number you would actually book. Start with a route page on KAYAK, then use the historical ranges above to set a ceiling. For Fort Lauderdale–Cartagena, start at $335 nonstop or $317 with a connection. If the fare appears, check the five-night subtotal before buying.
  6. Use the 24-hour safety valve correctly. NerdWallet's July 30, 2026 refund guide says American tickets canceled within 24 hours of booking and at least seven days before departure receive a full refund to the original payment method. Check the airline and seller before relying on the rule, especially when an online travel agency takes the payment.

Route of the week: Fort Lauderdale–Cartagena

Cartagena is the route to price first because the current ticket and the five-night ground math land in the same workable band. KAYAK's August 18 route screen shows $317 roundtrip with one stop and a typical range of $312–$413. A nonstop screen is $335, with a typical range of $245–$405. The route page says booking at least two weeks ahead saves around 6% versus last minute.
The five-night floor is roughly $527–$687 before baggage, local transport, activities, taxes, and transfers: $317 for the ticket, $150–$250 for five nights in a budget hotel, and $60–$120 for five days of local-restaurant meals. Going's April 15 trend report gives Cartagena the broader signal: more competition on Caribbean routes is making Colombia's northern coast easier to reach.
If you live near South Florida, search the full September and October calendar, then compare the one-stop ticket with the $335 nonstop. If the nonstop is only $18 more, the time saved can be worth it; if the connection saves more than that, the one-stop fare keeps the route inside the value corridor. The booking decision is yours, but the price to watch is clear: $317 roundtrip, or $335 nonstop.
