This week's budget trip math: San Salvador is the late-summer value check (2026)

San Salvador is the route to price before you default to a resort. A Boston roundtrip currently sits in a KAYAK typical range of $323-$559, while a five-night screen using a budget hotel and local food puts the trip at roughly $613-$849 before transport and activities. The broader fare picture still favors short-haul Latin America and the Caribbean, but the cheapest ticket is not always the cheapest trip.

The three fare bands to use this week

Value corridor: $124-$344 roundtrip. Going's July 13, 2026 report shows sample deal prices in this range for Calgary, Vancouver, Guatemala City, Bogotá, Punta Cana, Montego Bay, Liberia, and San José. Its average deal prices run from $241 to $344. These are alert targets from three sample U.S. departure cities, not live quotes for every airport.

Middle ground: about $350-$650. Current KAYAK route pages checked on July 28 place Boston-San Salvador at $323-$559, Washington-Reagan-Lima at $506-$602, and Philadelphia-Montego Bay at $511-$701. That band is where a flexible date or one-stop itinerary can make a destination look affordable, while a fixed weekend can push it into the next tier.

Premium window: $650 and up. Going's average deal price is $732 for Tokyo and $793 for Auckland. Those fares can still work for travelers who stay longer or choose low-cost neighborhoods, but a five-night trip has less room for a bad hotel rate or a missed connection.

The bands are decision rules, not market-wide averages. Going's ranking uses deals sent between April 20, 2025 and April 19, 2026, weighted by average price, discount, and deal frequency. The report says its experts look for destinations with deals at least every few weeks. There is no published expiration date for any individual fare, so treat every number below as a price target rather than a promise.

The table uses Going's July 13 report. The range is the low-to-high spread of the sample deals shown in that report; the average is Going's weighted deal figure.

The Going source is its July 13 international fare report. It is a deal-frequency ranking, not a fare calendar. If your airport is absent from the sample, use the average as a ceiling for an alert, not as a quote.

Five five-night budget screens

These five destinations come from the affordability set in Travel + Leisure's March 24, 2026 Kayak-based comparison, which used searches from December 1, 2025 through March 8, 2026 for travel through June 30, 2026. That travel window has passed, so the article is a destination watchlist, not current airfare evidence. The flight lines below are refreshed with the July 28 KAYAK pages or the July 13 Going deal report.

For lodging and food, I use Budget Your Trip's traveler-spend estimates because the fare sources do not publish comparable five-night food and accommodation splits. Its city pages were updated June 8-9, 2026; its El Salvador hotel and trip-cost pages were updated July 28 and July 26. Shared-room figures mean one person splitting a double room. These totals exclude checked bags, local transportation, activities, taxes, and resort fees.

The table changes the order you might expect from the airfare list. San José, Costa Rica is the cheapest screen when a deal in the $185-$222 sample range appears. Montego Bay stays competitive on airfare but loses ground to Jamaica's hotel and food costs. Belize City is the clearest warning: a cheap-looking Central American trip can cross $1,000 once August airfare and ordinary ground costs are combined.

Route of the week: San Salvador

The Boston-San Salvador route is the cleanest value test in this week's set. KAYAK's page shows a $323-$559 typical roundtrip range, a $502 lowest recent roundtrip, and a $616 lowest nonstop. The nonstop takes about 5 hours 25 minutes, while the lowest fare is a one-stop Copa itinerary. KAYAK's Boston-San Salvador page says to look at least two weeks ahead and identifies October as the cheapest month on its route history.

At a $500 fare, the five-night screen is about $790 before bags, transport, and sightseeing. That is not a beach-resort bargain, but it is a reasonable city-and-volcano trip if you can use the $36 budget hotel line rather than a resort property. KAYAK's $616 nonstop is a convenience buy, not automatically a value buy.

The route also has a useful cross-check from Travel + Leisure's March 24 Kayak comparison, which placed El Salvador at a $530 combined flight-and-hotel average for its earlier travel window. Do not read that as a July quote. Use it as evidence that San Salvador belongs on the affordability watchlist, then judge the live fare against the five-night math above.

Booking timing that still works

Set alerts instead of refreshing every day. Going's July 23 booking guide recommends Going, Google Flights, KAYAK, and Skyscanner for price tracking. Create alerts for the destination and one nearby gateway, then check when the price moves rather than when you feel anxious about it.
Plan in weeks, but do not worship a single booking day. Going's current guide puts ordinary international trips in a 2-8 month booking window and peak-season international trips in a 4-10 month window. It favors Tuesday, Wednesday, and Saturday departures. KAYAK's April 1 guide, updated June 29, found Wednesday outbound and return flights cheapest in its international data and says 7-14 days can be the low point for some economy leisure routes. Those are different datasets, so the practical rule is to use an alert and a ceiling, not a superstition about Tuesday purchases.
Use September and October as the next search window. Going's July guide lists January and February as the cheapest months overall, September and October as the next-best deal months, and July and December as the most expensive. For a late-summer trip, a fare that is merely acceptable today may be a poor buy if your dates can move into September.
Compare nonstop convenience with the ground budget. On Boston-San Salvador, the current nonstop example is $616 versus a typical route band beginning at $323. On Houston-Belize City, KAYAK shows an August typical range of $512-$803, while its lowest recent roundtrip is $399 and United's nonstop example is $463. A connection can save money, but only if the schedule does not force a hotel night or expensive airport transfer.
Use the 24-hour rule as a safety valve, not a strategy. The U.S. Department of Transportation requires airlines to offer either a 24-hour no-penalty cancellation/refund or a 24-hour unpaid hold when the ticket is bought at least seven days before departure. The rule does not apply to tickets bought through online travel agencies or other third-party agents, so book directly with the airline when that protection matters.

The quick decision

Set the first alert on San José, Costa Rica if your airport can reach the $185-$222 deal screen. Price San Salvador next if you want a city break and can keep Boston below about $500. Choose Lima when the flight stays near the lower end of the DCA range and you can use shared lodging. Treat Belize City and Montego Bay as total-trip decisions: their ground costs can erase an airfare win.
