Steins;Gate — Anime Next Up #02
This week's classic pick: Steins;Gate. Ranked #5 on MAL with 9.07 stars, White Fox's 2011 sci-fi thriller starts as absurdist comedy and detonates into an emotional masterpiece by the midpoint. If you liked Re:Zero's loop-til-it-hurts devastation or ERASED's tight plotting, this is your next pick.

Studio: White Fox · Episodes: 24 · MAL Score: 9.07 ★ · Aired: Apr – Sep 2011 · Genres: Sci-Fi · Suspense · Drama
Rintarou Okabe is a self-styled mad scientist running the Future Gadget Laboratory out of a cramped Akihabara flat with two friends and a phone-microwave that keeps turning bananas into green goo. When he stumbles into a time-travel conference and discovers the microwave can send text messages into the past, what begins as absurd tinkering accelerates into a conspiracy that threatens everyone he cares about — and his own grip on reality.
The first act is deliberately slow: awkward banter, niche otaku humor, and a cast that seems to meander. Stick with it. Everything you think is filler is a fuse. Around the midpoint the show flips a switch, and all those planted seeds detonate at once. From there it runs with a momentum few thriller anime ever match.
- "A time machine built from a microwave — and it changes everything."
- Episode 1 hooks you; episode 12 breaks you
- Two leads with real chemistry and razor-sharp banter
- Zero filler — every scene plants a seed
If You Liked…
- Re:Zero — Same emotional devastation; same loop-until-it-hurts structure that forces you to care about characters before it punishes you for it.
- ERASED — Same tight plotting and compulsive forward momentum; a mystery that makes every episode feel like the one that will finally answer everything.
Watch episode 1 tonight. | Source: MAL – Steins;Gate
