Fauci's Fifth Amendment fight

Anthony Fauci declined to answer questions at a July 29 Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee hearing, invoking his Fifth Amendment rights. Rand Paul said Fauci repeated the response 111 times and announced that the committee would vote next week on a contempt resolution. 12

The hearing followed Paul's release of more than 1,100 pages of Fauci diary material. Republicans used the documents to press claims about contradictions in Fauci's public and private discussions of COVID origins; the underlying lab-leak versus zoonotic-spillover dispute remains unresolved, with institutions and agencies assigning different levels of confidence to competing explanations. 34

Fauci's lawyers said the Fifth protects against compelled self-incrimination, while Democrats called the hearing one-sided. That leaves two questions running in parallel: whether the refusal was legally protected, and whether the committee's process can produce answers trusted across the political divide. 25
