She thinks of him — at a northern frontier garrison somewhere beyond the frost grass — and wonders: is he lifting his head right now, looking at this same moon?
The moon does not divide them. It falls on two places at once: the rain-scented south and the sand-and-hoofbeat north. Mountains and rivers stand between them; the moon's clear radiance does not.
In the bridge the song steps across the distance into his world — beacon smoke dimming the flag, coat not yet removed, the cold garrison moon hanging like a blade above him.
