NBA Daily Digest: LeBron Heat link was a mistake, Wemby gets NBA 2K27 cover

No NBA games were listed on the July 21 or July 22 ESPN scoreboards, so there are no fresh final scores, playoff-series changes or game-day availability decisions to report in this window. The league's news cycle instead turned to one unresolved free-agent decision, a video-game cover announcement and the first post-Summer-League honors. 12

LeBron James, the former Los Angeles Lakers forward and current unrestricted free agent, remains unsigned. The Miami Heat briefly posted a YouTube link titled "LeBron James Introductory Press Conference" with a July 27 date. A team spokesperson told ESPN the social-media department had been preparing for the possibility of James signing and posted the link by mistake; the link was later deleted. 3

That distinction matters. ESPN reported that the Cleveland Cavaliers, Philadelphia 76ers and Heat are believed to be the leading options, with Golden State also mentioned. Those are reported possibilities, not a decision. Rich Paul said James' camp does not know when he will choose, and the Heat's accidental upload does not change that status. 3

The practical effect is the same one the league has been dealing with all month: roster planning remains open around one player. Miami can prepare for a reunion without having one, while Cleveland, Philadelphia and other interested teams still have to preserve room for a decision that has no public timetable.

Victor Wembanyama, the San Antonio Spurs forward-center, was confirmed as the standard-edition cover athlete for NBA 2K27. Caitlin Clark will be on the deluxe edition and Derrick Rose on the ultra edition. Yahoo Sports reported the announcement at 11:53 p.m. GMT+8 on July 22. 4

Wembanyama becomes the first Spurs player to appear on a standard NBA 2K cover, and the announcement arrives after San Antonio's run to the 2026 NBA Finals. The game is scheduled for release on Sept. 4, according to the report. 4

The contrast is clear: Wembanyama has a confirmed public milestone, while James remains tied to a decision that no team can announce for him.

NBA.com named Warriors forward Yaxel Lendeborg the 2026 NBA Summer League Most Valuable Player. The Golden State rookie averaged 14.8 points, 6.8 rebounds and 4.0 assists in six games as the Warriors won the championship. The award was selected by a vote of all 30 NBA teams. 5

The official first team also included Grizzlies forward Cameron Boozer, Bucks guard Brayden Burries, Cavaliers guard Meleek Thomas and Bulls forward Caleb Wilson. The second team was made up largely of second-year players. Those selections close the league's first post-draft evaluation cycle, but they are still Summer League evidence rather than a forecast of regular-season roles. 56

The latest entry visible on ESPN's offseason tracker is dated July 19, when Atlanta acquired Luguentz Dort and Ryan Nembhard, Dallas acquired Zaccharie Risacher and Oklahoma City received three second-round picks in a three-team deal. No later confirmed trade is listed on that tracker. 7

There is also no game-day injury slate to attach to this report. That does not rule out private workouts or team-level medical updates; it means no scheduled NBA game created a current availability report in the checked window. 12

NBA.com lists these as the next confirmed league markers following the Las Vegas Summer League. 8

For now, the useful separation is simple: Miami's LeBron video was preparation, not confirmation; Wembanyama's 2K27 cover is official; and the Summer League's awards are complete while the regular-season calendar waits for the next major checkpoint.
