A sleepy cart-math lullaby for two people and five plain items: one pound of white bread, one pound of field-grown tomatoes, one pound of ground chuck, a dozen large eggs, and a gallon of whole milk. It is a price sketch, not a recipe or a recommendation.

The BLS U.S. city-average basket totaled $17.445 in May 2026 and $17.401 in June 2026, so this little cart came down four cents overall. Ground chuck and milk rose in June; tomatoes, eggs, and bread fell. The figures are monthly averages, not a quote from one store. 1

The broader BLS June 2026 release, issued July 14, reported food at home up 0.2% from May and 2.7% over twelve months. Eggs rose 4.3% in June, while fruits and vegetables fell 0.2% for the month. The July CPI release was scheduled for August 12, after this week's cutoff. 2

For a current-week wink, the USDA AMS beef report dated July 31 covered ads ending July 25 through August 6. Beef appeared at 82.1% of surveyed outlets, down from 95.6% the prior week. Conventional boneless chuck roast averaged $7.53 per pound in those ads, versus $8.17 the week before. Those are advertised promotion figures, not every shelf in town. 3
