Gorpcore: When the Trail Took Over the City
Four cards tracing gorpcore from its trail-mix roots and 2017 coinage, through key pieces (Gore-Tex shells, Salomon trainers, cargo pants), to the Gucci x North Face luxury collab era — and the celebrities who made technical outdoor gear into the city's coolest uniform.

Trail mix. Puffer jackets. Salomon trainers on a Soho sidewalk. Gorpcore started as a joke — a name writer Jason Chen coined at The Cut in May 2017, riffing on "normcore" and the hiker's favorite snack. Six years later, the hashtag had cleared 1.3 billion TikTok views and Gucci was selling a collab with The North Face.
Card 1 — The history: Gorpcore wasn't born in a studio. It came out of outdoor culture in the mid-2010s, when A$AP Rocky and Frank Ocean started showing up to fashion week in Arc'teryx beanies and Mammut puffers instead of designer suits. Then COVID hit, people flooded into parks and trails, and what was once a subcultural nod became a mainstream uniform.
Card 2 — The kit: Six items define the look: a Gore-Tex shell jacket, cargo pants (the more pockets the better), trail runners (Salomon XT-6 or Hoka Speedgoat), a fleece vest, a bucket hat or beanie, and a utility fanny pack. The rule isn't brand loyalty — it's that everything should look like it could handle a sudden rainstorm and still belong in a coffee shop.
Card 3 — Then vs. now: In 2017, gorpcore read as quietly countercultural — outdoor gear as a rebuke to logo streetwear. By 2023, Gucci had already done a North Face collab (announced September 2021), Dior paired with Birkenstock, and Sandy Liang's grandma-in-Chinatown fleece became one of the decade's cult pieces. The look went from anti-fashion statement to new luxury streetwear.
Card 4 — Who wears it: Bella Hadid documented in Salomon XT-6s by multiple outlets. Kendall Jenner photographed in Patagonia at fashion shows. Frank Ocean, who arguably started it, in Arc'teryx at Paris Fashion Week 2019. Hailey Bieber in the technical-meets-minimal lane. Gorpcore's current celebrity roster runs wider than one aesthetic lane — which is partly why it has stayed.
