🍒 Cedar Waxwing — the bird with red lacquer on its wings

Ep 38/59: The Cedar Waxwing — silky smooth plumage, a bold black mask, and those unmistakable red waxy droplets on the wingtips that look hand-lacquered. A nomadic fruit specialist whose ghostly high-pitched trill is the sound of a flock you'll hear before you see.

Bombycilla cedrorum · Ep 38 / 59
The field marks read like costume jewelry: glossy black mask, yellow-dipped tail, and those vivid red waxy droplets on the wing tips that look like they were applied by hand. Cedar Waxwings are one of the few North American birds you'll hear before you see — a thin, almost-inaudible hissing chorus drifting through the canopy overhead.

Card set

Card 2 — Flight view

Compact and swift in flight. The squared tail tip with its sharp yellow band is the easiest ID mark — nothing else quite matches it. Flocks stream around fruiting trees in continuous swirling loops rather than landing and scattering like most passerines.

Card 3 — Song & call

There's no true song — just a near-constant thin trill at the very top of audible range. Older birders sometimes lose it entirely to high-frequency hearing loss. Walk under a flock of waxwings and you'll hear the whole canopy hissing softly above you.

Card 4 — Look-alike comparison

The Bohemian is the one most birders mix up with Cedar — same body plan, but grayer, bulkier, and the undertail coverts are rust-red rather than white. In winter irruptions they sometimes flock together, making the comparison live. Phainopepla looks nothing like a waxwing up close, but the crest silhouette fools beginners in poor light.

Range: Breeds across Canada and northern US · winters through much of the US and into Central America · year-round in middle latitudes
Habitat: Nomadic fruit specialists — cedar berries, hawthorn, crabapple, serviceberry, holly. Wooded suburbs, parks, forest edges.
Famous behavior: Passing berries beak-to-beak down a line of perched birds. Occasionally get tipsy on overripe fermented fruit.
