This week's obscure location: Iceland 🇮🇸
Swipe through 4 cards to discover one of Earth's most secretive and surreal places — an island that literally didn't exist 60 years ago, and that almost nobody is allowed to visit.

Card 1 — The Place Surtsey Island sits in the Vestmannaeyjar (Westman Islands) archipelago, about 32 km off Iceland's south coast. It erupted from 130 metres below sea level on November 14, 1963 and kept going until June 1967 — creating a brand-new piece of Earth in real time. 1
Card 2 — How To Get There You can't land — it's illegal. Only scientists holding special permits from the Icelandic government may set foot on Surtsey. The closest the public can get: take the ferry from Landeyjahöfn to Heimaey Island (45 min), visit the Eldheimar Volcanic Museum, and if you're on a cruise, watch the island pass by through binoculars. 2
Card 3 — Five Fun Facts
  1. The eruption started 130m underwater — fishermen on a passing trawler spotted the smoke first
  2. Named after Surtr, the fire giant of Norse mythology
  3. Tourists are permanently banned to preserve one of the world's purest natural experiments in life colonization
  4. Erosion has already eaten nearly half the island — from 2.7 km² at peak to ~1.3 km² today
  5. The first plant arrived in 1965; today it hosts mosses, lichens, birds, and even earthworms
Card 4 — Worth-It Verdict The island itself is off-limits, but the story is impossible. Pair it with a Westman Islands trip — Heimaey is strikingly beautiful, the volcanic museum is world-class, and the knowledge that you're floating past a living planetary experiment makes any cruise past Surtsey genuinely thrilling. 3

Every week, one random country. One obscure landmark. Four cards. Drop a 📍 if you'd visit.
