Tin is one of humanity's oldest metals, used since 3000 BCE. Mixed with copper it creates bronze, defining the Bronze Age. Tin cans protect food. Below 13.2°C, white beta-tin transforms to gray alpha-tin ('tin pest'), which crumbled the buttons on Napoleon's soldiers' coats in the Russian winter.
