MEOVV — Teddy's Darkest Pop Bet
THEBLACKLABEL's first-ever girl group debuted in September 2024 with a sound built around Teddy's dark alt-pop production instincts. Five members, a feline concept, and a breakout 2025: "Hands Up" hit 80M YouTube views and their first music show #1. Here's why fans of Aespa, Twice, and Le Sserafim should be paying attention.

THEBLACKLABEL finally made their girl group. Five members, one mandate: be as far from cute-concept K-pop as possible.
MEOVV (pronounced "Meow" — an acronym for My Eyes Open VVide) debuted on September 6, 2024, and landed with a sound that felt deliberate in every way. Produced by Teddy, the man behind BLACKPINK and 2NE1, the group was never going to play it safe. Dark pop textures, hip-hop confidence, and a feline edge that shows up in both the name and the aesthetic. Less idol, more dangerous pop artist.
The members
Five women with unusually deep pre-debut credentials. Gawon is the leader — main vocalist, rapper, former YG trainee and Adidas model. Sooin is the main dancer, described by Hollywood Reporter as the group's performance anchor. Anna (Japanese, former Seventeen Japan exclusive model) and Ella (Korean-American, former child model for Zara, H&M, and GAP) bring international range; Ella was the first member revealed and immediately drew comparisons to BLACKPINK's Jennie in aesthetic energy. Narin handles main rap alongside main vocals, rounding out a lineup where almost no one is quietly coasting in a secondary role.
Sound profile
Genre: Dark alt-pop / hip-hop / R&B
Production: Teddy (BLACKPINK, 2NE1)
Label: THEBLACKLABEL (Capitol Records globally, Universal Japan)
The clearest comparison anchor: if BLACKPINK's production DNA got poured into a girl group with fewer ballads, more edge, and a feline mystique as its operating theme. "Meow" (debut single) caught attention because it wasn't trying to be anything other than confident. "Toxic" (November 2024) doubled down on the hip-hop structure. Then came "Hands Up" (April 2025) — their biggest moment yet: 80 million YouTube views, #12 on Korea's Circle chart, #1 on Billboard Japan Heatseekers Songs, their first music show win on M Countdown on May 8, 2025. "Drop Top," the EP lead single from My Eyes Open VVide, pushed into pop-rock territory with a brash chorus and guitar-forward production, showing Teddy deliberately expanding the group's palette.
Standout tracks
| Track | Why it stands out |
|---|---|
| Meow (Sept 2024) | Debut statement that charted in Korea (#30), New Zealand, and Malaysia in the same week — rare for a group debuting on a digital single alone |
| Toxic (Nov 2024) | Double A-side with "Body" — darker, slower-burning; showed the group could hold tension without dropping into a typical K-pop drop |
| Hands Up (Apr 2025) | Breakout single. Peaked #12 KOR, #1 Japan Heatseekers, #9 Billboard World Digital Song Sales. The choreography became a viral challenge within a week of release |
| Drop Top (May 2025) | EP lead single with pop-rock production, nominated for Song of the Year at MAMA 2025 |
| Burning Up (Oct 2025) | Y2K-inflected, reached #5 Billboard World Digital Song Sales, performed at SBS Gayo Daejeon and multiple year-end shows |

Why fans of the reference groups will connect
Aespa fans: The production kinship is the most direct. Teddy and SM work in adjacent dark-electronic lanes — both labels build world-aesthetics into their groups, both favor synthetic textures over acoustic warmth, and both let the visual concept carry serious weight. MEOVV doesn't have Kwangya lore, but the feline mythology fills a similar function: give the music a universe to live inside.
Twice fans: "Meow" is more addictive than it has any right to be for a "dark concept" song. The hook sits in your head like a Twice B-side. Ella's charisma in particular reads as idol-fluent in the way Twice has always been — she brings a fan-approachable warmth that keeps MEOVV from feeling inaccessible despite the edge.
Le Sserafim fans: "Hands Up" is the obvious entry point. The physical precision in the choreo, the athletic confidence in the performance video, the refusal to soften anything — it's the same operating philosophy that makes Le Sserafim compelling. Different sonic lane, same "this group takes itself seriously and expects you to also" energy.
