On May 5, 2026, at 6:55 AM, Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong sent 700 employees an email informing them their system access had already been revoked. The email, which he posted publicly on X hours later, cited two forces: a down crypto market and AI — specifically that "engineers use AI to ship in days what used to take a team weeks."

The document announced the company would flatten to "5 layers max below CEO/COO," eliminate "pure managers," and experiment with "one-person teams" where a single employee would be engineer, designer, and product manager all at once. It described Coinbase's future as "an intelligence, with humans around the edge aligning it."

It is, by any measure, a remarkably written email. It closes with a vision of "increasing economic freedom" for the world.
