She drove home the long way. Nobody knows about the long way except the person taking it. She left her keys on the second step. She put the magazine face-down on the counter so she wouldn't have to see whoever was on the cover with whatever they'd done with their year. And she waited for the oven to preheat.

This is a song about that afternoon — the one where nothing dramatic is happening and everything already has. The receipt is the whole document: three items, eleven dollars and forty-seven cents, a Tuesday in February, 2:14 in the afternoon. She was there. The register remembers. It doesn't know what the morning was, but it has the date, the time, the items, the total. That's the forensic record. The song fills in the rest: the nutrition label she read three times, the ginger ale she drank before she really wanted it, the lawn mower somewhere outside making the kind of noise that means the world has decided this is a normal day.
