[0:06] Did VAR just rob Arsenal of a Champions League semi-final lead in Madrid? Mikel Arteta certainly thinks so — and honestly, it's hard to argue with him.
[0:15] Welcome to The Full Time Report. I'm Tom. It is Thursday the thirtieth of April, eight in the morning, and last night was proper European football. Arsenal were in Madrid, three penalties were given, one was taken away — and the whole thing ended one-all.
[0:31] On top of that, tonight we've got two Europa League semi-finals first legs. Forest versus Villa — the all-English tie — and Braga hosting Freiburg. Big, big evening ahead.
[0:42] Plus transfers are ticking along, Salah's future still hasn't officially landed yet, and there's a whopping injury list heading into the weekend. Let's get into it.

Arsenal 1-1 Atlético Madrid — UCL Semi-Final First Leg

[0:50] Right. Arsenal versus Atlético Madrid, Champions League semi-final first leg, the Wanda Metropolitano, sixty-eight thousand four hundred and twenty-one people watching.
[1:01] The headline? One-one. On paper, not a bad away result for Arsenal. In reality, Arteta's furious — and the conversation this morning is almost entirely about one decision.
[1:13] Here's how it went. Arsenal, playing Raya in goal, a back four of White, Saliba, Gabriel, Hincapié, Rice and Zubimendi in midfield, with Ødegaard, Madueke, Gyökeres and Martinelli ahead of them.
[1:27] First half, Arsenal are well on top. Forty-four minutes — Gyökeres goes down in the box after Hancko bundles into him. Penalty. Gyökeres steps up, and he buries it. Ice cold. One-nil Arsenal going into the break.
[1:42] Atlético come out for the second half looking completely transformed. Simeone brought on Robin Le Normand at the break, shifted the shape, and suddenly they were pressing Arsenal all over the pitch.
[1:54] Fifty-six minutes — a shot from Llorente deflects off Ben White's hand. VAR checks it, referee points to the spot. Julián Álvarez steps up. One-one.
[2:04] Now, Arsenal weren't happy about that one either. Under UCL handball rules, it counts — and Arteta even acknowledged that UEFA have been consistent with that interpretation. But what came next? That's where it all kicked off.
[2:18] Around the seventy-eighth minute, Eberechi Eze — on as a sub — is brought down in the box by David Hancko. Clear contact. Referee Makkelie points to the spot straight away. Arsenal penalty.
[2:30] But then Simeone's off his technical area, gesticulating wildly, basically demanding VAR have a look. And VAR does look. And looks again. And looks thirteen times, apparently — and then overturns it. No penalty.
[2:43] UEFA released a statement saying Hancko made no foul. Dermot Gallagher, former Premier League ref, was pretty clear — for VAR to overturn an on-field decision, you need a clear and obvious error. Gallagher didn't think that bar was met.
[2:56] And Arteta? Well. He did not hold back. Here's what he told the press afterwards.
[3:02] He said — and I'm quoting here — "What I am incredibly fuming with, is how the penalty on Ebs gets overturned in the manner that it happened, when it's not a clear and obvious error. There is clear contact. You make the decision, you cannot overturn that decision when you have to look at it thirteen times. At this level — I'm sorry — but this cannot happen."
[3:21] He also said he was incredibly proud of his players, that Arsenal handled the context brilliantly over nine and a half months, and that — crucially — the tie is still in their hands.
[3:31] Bukayo Saka echoed that. Calm as you like. He said: "A draw away from home in a Champions League semi-final is not a bad result. At home, with our fans, it's going to be different. I'm confident about that."
[3:44] Gyökeres chipped in with a similar vibe. First half they controlled it, second half Atlético pressed them hard, but he said — it's only half time. Two legs. One game left.
[3:54] On the other side, Simeone was sly about it. He said: "Sometimes VAR gives to you, sometimes it takes away." Which is technically true and also absolutely infuriating if you're an Arsenal fan.
[4:10] Griezmann said Atlético played better in the second half and they want to reach the final. All the expected stuff. But there's a stat that stood out — Simeone has never lost a Champions League knockout match at home to an English side.
[4:22] Seven matches across different decades, different opponents — Chelsea, Liverpool, Man City, United, Spurs, Leicester, now Arsenal. Played three, won three, drawn four, lost zero. That's a remarkable record.
[4:37] And Julián Álvarez? Another moment for the stats books. That goal last night was his twenty-fifth Champions League goal — and he's reached it in fewer appearances than Agüero and Messi. He's the first player ever to score ten or more UCL goals in a single season for Atlético Madrid. Remarkable.
[4:54] Jamie Carragher made an interesting wider point too. He said the handball rules in the Champions League are becoming a stain on the competition — inconsistent, too harsh, and last night, both penalty decisions involving handball looked wrong to him in different ways.
[5:07] So the aggregate is one-all. Second leg is on the fifth of May at the Emirates. Arsenal at home, their crowd, their fortress. If you're Arteta, you'd rather be in this position than heading to the Metropolitano needing a result.
[5:23] The Emirates on a European night is something else. And Arsenal haven't been to a Champions League final since 2006. The motivation is absolutely there.

Arsenal Injury Concerns for the Second Leg

[5:32] Before we move on from Arsenal — the injury picture for the second leg isn't great. Mikel Merino is out until late May with an ankle problem, so he's definitely not playing at the Emirates.
[5:42] Havertz and Timber both have groin injuries with expected return dates of around the tenth of May — which is after the second leg on the fifth. So they're tight, borderline, and I'd say genuinely uncertain.
[5:55] Eberechi Eze also picked up a knock during the match. He's listed with an injury, no confirmed timeline yet. Given that he's the one who was involved in that overturned penalty, you can imagine how much Arsenal will want him fit for the second leg.
[6:08] Arsenal went into that game without Merino and managed fine, to be fair. But they're thin in midfield, and against Atlético's press you need bodies you can trust. Something to keep an eye on over the next few days.

UEL Semi-Finals Preview — Tonight's Action

[6:21] Right, let's turn to tonight. Because if you thought last night's UCL was spicy, the Europa League semi-finals could be just as good.
[6:29] First up — and this is the one everyone in England will be watching — Nottingham Forest against Aston Villa. City Ground. Eight o'clock. First leg.
[6:37] Think about what this tie represents. The first all-English Europa League semi-final since 1972/73, when Liverpool beat Tottenham on away goals. Two former European Cup winners from the East Midlands, separated by about eighty kilometres.
[6:53] Forest won this competition in 1979 and 1980 under Brian Clough. Villa won it in 1982 under Tony Barton. Neither club has won a major European trophy since. For one of them tonight, the path to another final genuinely opens up.
[7:08] Forest under Vítor Pereira are on an eight-game unbeaten run. Remember where they were in January — fighting for survival, chopping through managers. And now they're in a European semi-final. That's the Morgan Gibbs-White effect, that's Chris Wood back and available, that's Pereira coming in and just giving everyone belief.
[7:25] Pereira said before the game: "Pressure is to be ourselves as a team. With good vibes, we can achieve miracles." I genuinely think he believes that. And the City Ground on a night like this? Absolute cauldron.
[7:39] Villa though — this is Unai Emery, four-time Europa League winner. He's obsessed with this competition. He won it three times at Sevilla, once at Villarreal. He wants number five.
[7:50] Ollie Watkins, who's never won a trophy in six seasons at Villa, said this tournament is something he strives to win. And John McGinn, the captain, sets the tone in the dressing room. Villa have the pedigree for this.
[8:04] The two sides drew one-one in the league at the City Ground earlier in April. So it's finely balanced. Villa have won sixty-four of their league head-to-heads to Forest's forty. But Forest have home advantage tonight and the momentum.
[8:18] On the injury front — Forest are without Hudson-Odoi long-term, Murillo's out until the fourth, and Sangare is touch-and-go. Chris Wood is back but on managed minutes. For Villa, Boubacar Kamara is out until June, Amadou Onana is borderline — so their central midfield depth is pretty stretched.
[8:36] As Aina put it: "Massive night for the club." He's not wrong. Whatever happens tonight, City Ground on a European semi-final night is going to be electric.
[8:46] The other semi-final tonight is Braga versus Freiburg, also at eight o'clock in Portugal. Now this one might be flying under the radar for most UK fans, but it's genuinely fascinating.
[8:58] Braga haven't been in a UEL final since 2011, when they lost to Porto. They've been brilliant in this campaign — came back from two-nil down to beat Ferencváros four-nil at home in the quarter-final second leg, then went to Seville and won four-two at Real Betis. Absolutely fearless.
[9:18] Their coach Carlos Vicens used to work as an assistant to Pep Guardiola at Manchester City. So there's a philosophical connection there — and you can see it in how they build from the back and stretch play.
[9:26] Freiburg, meanwhile, are in the first-ever UEFA semi-final in their history. Incredibly historic for a club of that size. Their manager Julian Schuster said: "When you see the stadium for the first time, you get a tingle right away." Love that.
[9:40] They beat Genk five-one, then knocked out Celta Vigo three-nil at home and three-one away. Compact defending, quick transitions, Vincenzo Grifo pulling the strings. Don't sleep on them.
[9:51] Braga's Ricardo Horta put it plainly: "Reaching the final in Istanbul is a clear objective. We will not hide that." Istanbul's the venue for the final on the twenty-first of May. It's going to be a brilliant second half of semi-final football tonight.

Transfer News

[10:05] Transfers now. And the big one everyone's still waiting on — Mohamed Salah.
[10:09] Here's where we are: scans confirmed it's a minor left hamstring injury, not structural damage, so he should be available before the end of the season. But he is leaving Liverpool at the end of the campaign — that's confirmed — and the announcement of where he's going is apparently coming very soon.
[10:24] The Egyptian national team's media coordinator said — within days. That was yesterday. So we could genuinely be waking up to that news any morning this week. American league, Saudi league, Inter Milan, PSG — the options are all on the table.
[10:38] Nine seasons. Two hundred and fifty-five goals. It's the end of an era. Whatever you think of the decision to let it come to this, the man has been an absolute phenomenon at Liverpool.
[10:48] Moving on — and this is significant — Mykhailo Mudryk has been handed a four-year doping ban by the FA. Maximum punishment. He failed a test in 2024 for meldonium — the same substance that got Maria Sharapova a ban in tennis. He's appealing to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
[11:06] If the ban holds, that's his career at Chelsea effectively over. He's twenty-four. He's been suspended already pending the investigation. Four years takes him to June 2028. That is a brutal situation.
[11:19] On the managerial front at Chelsea — the Xabi Alonso pursuit is described as close. It's still a three-horse race publicly — Alonso, Andoni Iraola, and Marco Silva — but the noise around Alonso is getting louder.
[11:33] John Stones leaving Manchester City this summer is all but official now. David Ornstein reported the announcement is imminent — mutual decision, free agent, thirty-one years old, trophy-laden decade, sixteen trophies. He'll have no shortage of suitors.
[11:47] Sandro Tonali transfer update — Fabrizio Romano says a return to Serie A this summer is absolutely off the table. Manchester United are working hard on a deal. Liverpool are also mentioned as potential suitors. Either way, he stays in the Premier League. Newcastle presumably have a say in all this too.
[12:05] And Paulo Dybala — Romano confirmed he's not giving any club indications yet. Full focus on finishing the season at Roma before deciding his future. He'll be a free agent and his name will be linked to everyone in June.
[12:17] One more worth flagging — Real Madrid. Florentino Pérez apparently wants José Mourinho as next head coach. The old Special One with a break clause worth three million euros at Benfica. Ornstein says support isn't universal inside the club — but the president is driving it. That one's going to run and run.

Injury Roundup — GW35 and Beyond

[12:35] Right, the injury table. It's a big one this week, so let me give you the key names heading into GW35 and the upcoming European second legs.
[12:45] Liverpool are down Mohamed Salah — hamstring, out until June — and Alisson Becker is also listed with an undisclosed injury expected until the third of May. Conor Bradley's got a long-term knee problem keeping him out until November. That is a lot of big names missing at Anfield.
[13:01] Chelsea: Levi Colwill is out with an ACL tear, which is a brutal blow for a young central defender. Reece James has a thigh problem until the fourth. Estevao — the Brazilian starlet — is out until June. And Mudryk, of course, is suspended.
[13:16] Tottenham are absolutely decimated. Xavi Simons is out until February twenty-twenty-seven with an ACL tear — season done before it properly started. On top of that, Kudus, Kulusevski, Romero, Solanke — Spurs are without huge chunks of their best players.
[13:32] Manchester City — Gvardiol out until the ninth, Ruben Dias until the fourth, and Rodri has a groin problem until the fourth as well. City without Dias and Rodri at the same time is a proper concern.
[13:43] Manchester United have Lisandro Martínez suspended until the ninth, De Ligt out until late May. Matheus Cunha is touch-and-go for the third. And Luke Shaw — still not back.
[13:53] Newcastle are without Alexander Isak — calf problem — plus Sandro Tonali is carrying a groin issue which makes that transfer saga even more complicated. Anthony Gordon is borderline for the second.
[14:06] For any GW35 Fantasy players still clinging on — Bournemouth are without Kluivert until the seventeenth, Brentford have got about seven players out including Damsgaard, Hickey, Janelt, Henderson. Brighton have lost Stefanos Tzimas for the season to a knee injury. That's a big one.
[14:23] The injury board across the league is absolutely carnage right now — twenty-one knee injuries at last count, twelve ankle problems, twelve thigh issues. It is the last sprint of the season and bodies are giving out everywhere.

Sign-Off

[14:36] Right, that's your Full Time Report for this morning. Let me leave you with the big picture.
[14:41] Arsenal are one game away from a Champions League final. One-one on aggregate, second leg at the Emirates on the fifth of May, home crowd behind them, Arteta's got a fire under him after last night. They've been magnificent all season. Don't write them off.
[14:55] But what a night it's going to be tonight. City Ground for a European semi is going to be very special. And Braga hosting Freiburg — both sides absolutely deserve their place in the last four. Four clubs, two ties, first legs. Go and enjoy it.
[15:09] I'll be back tomorrow morning with the results and all the reaction. Until then — take it easy, and I'll speak to you then.
