VPD releases video after East Vancouver distraction theft
Vancouver Police released video Thursday after an 88-year-old woman was robbed of two family heirlooms in a distraction theft near Kaslo Avenue and East Hastings Street. Police say a woman in the back of a dark four-door Kia Soul distracted the senior and swapped two gold necklaces, including one with jade, for fake jewelry; a man was driving and two children were also in the vehicle. VPD says the case may be linked to another distraction theft and is asking witnesses to come forward. 1
Surrey pedestrian critically injured in overnight collision
RCMP Surrey Provincial Operations Support Unit said an adult male was taken to hospital in critical condition after a single-vehicle collision near 108 Avenue and 142 Street at about 11:56 p.m. on July 15. The driver stayed at the scene and is cooperating; the cause remains under investigation. Police are seeking dashcam or CCTV footage from the area shortly before midnight. 2

Fresh Iran-U.S. strikes send the conflict across Gulf airspace
The BBC reported at 1:10 a.m. local time that the United States had launched a sixth consecutive night of strikes on Iran. U.S. Central Command said it hit dozens of Iranian military targets; the BBC separately verified damage to one bridge west of Bandar Abbas. Iranian state media said bridges, a train station and an airport were hit and reported seven deaths, claims that remain attributed rather than independently confirmed. 5
Iran’s Revolutionary Guards claimed retaliatory strikes on U.S. maritime-surveillance radar sites in Oman and targets in Kuwait and Bahrain. Jordan’s military separately said it shot down three Iranian missiles without casualties or damage. A United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations report cited by DW said a tanker was hit by an unknown projectile 19 nautical miles east of Khasab, Oman; all crew were safe, with minor structural damage and no reported environmental impact. 56
Rescue operation follows landslide in southwest China
A landslide in Pengshui county in Chongqing buried an unknown number of people and caused several residential buildings downhill to collapse, Reuters reported. Authorities had ordered more than 60 residents to evacuate, but the slide struck during the evacuation at 9:08 a.m. local time. Nine people had been pulled from the rubble, none in life-threatening condition, while the number still trapped was being confirmed; China activated a level-two emergency response and sent rescue personnel and vehicles. 7
