Five AI tools, and the hand they replace

Say three sentences into your phone about the posts you owe this week, and get them back drafted. That's one of this week's five tools, and Product Hunt put it first. This is AI Tools Weekly.

0:00 / 8:29
Every tool this week is a stand-in. One builds the internal tool you never had time to commission. One scans a room so you don't need the rig or the person who drives it. One answers your inbox. One does the design pass. One covers the sound library. Each is cheap enough to judge in an afternoon, and each stops short somewhere different — that shortfall is what this week's episode is about.

Runway App Studio

Runway launched App Studio on October 26, and it builds software rather than media. You describe the tool you want in plain language, and what comes back is a small app with its own interface that generates images, video or audio using your Brand Kits and your Workflows. 1
The part worth understanding is how the app is made. If you already have an Agent session or a Workflow that produces the result you want, one click turns it into an app with the prompt, the model chain and the settings locked in, so a colleague sees only the field they need to fill. 1 It launches with apps you can remix — character swap, a product-shot generator, 3D camera control, a precise-edit tool.
Nothing here is an add-on. App Studio is included in every paid plan, and building, running and hosting an app all draw on the credit balance you already have. Free accounts can run the built-in apps and anything shared with them, but not build their own. 1
The limit is in what it takes as input. App Studio packages a process you already have. If the way your team gets a good result lives in one person's habits and nobody has written it down, there is nothing to lock in, and the app will reproduce a decision you haven't made yet.
The test: build one thing you remake every week, then hand the link to a colleague and see what they get without asking you anything.

SpAItial Echo-3

Echo-3 went up on October 27 and it goes the other way: it builds nothing, and instead measures something that already exists. Walk slowly around a room with your iPhone for a few minutes, follow the on-screen coverage guide, and the model reconstructs the space as a photorealistic 3D scene at real-world scale. 2
The reconstruction is metric, so a dimension in the scene is the room's own dimension, and you can move through it, take measurements and send a link that opens in any browser. 3 Where your walk missed a surface, the model fills the gap so the filled region matches its surroundings. 2
It runs in the SpAItial app on iOS, with the first month free on a subscription, and Android is still listed as coming soon. 2 The launch post runs a side-by-side against Polycam, KIRI Engine and Niantic Scaniverse, following a similar path through the same scene in each app — that comparison is the company's own.
The limit follows from the same feature. Everything your camera missed is filled in by the model, and filled-in geometry is a guess that looks like the room. The published accuracy claim is about clean geometry at real scale, not about surfaces nobody captured.
The test: scan a room whose measurements you already know, then check the reconstruction against a tape before you quote off a room you have never measured.

Empacer

Empacer launched on Product Hunt this week and finished first on the weekly leaderboard. 4 It is a voice-first assistant for one-person businesses: explain the job out loud the way you would explain it to someone on their first day, and drafts come back — Instagram posts, replies to customer messages, documents built from your invoices and price lists. You approve each one; it does not send on its own. 5
What it actually sells is memory rather than output. It holds your prices, clients, tone and past work, and asks for them once at the start instead of making you re-explain the business in every chat. 5
Two limits are both stated on the site. The subscription is paid and the price depends on an offer, so you answer a short questionnaire before the number appears. 6 And it runs on the web and on Android — there is no iPhone app, which is an odd omission for something built around talking into a phone. 6
The test: give it a reply you already wrote by hand, the one where you had to say no, and see whether the draft is something you would send.

Hallmark

Hallmark topped GitHub's weekly trending board at about 45,000 stars, up more than 11,500 during the week. 7 It is a design skill for Claude Code, Codex, Cursor and OpenCode — a file you install so your coding agent has taste. It is MIT-licensed and, by the repository's own account, made by Together AI. 8
One command installs it. After that, when you ask for a page, it deals one of fifty themes, lays the page out around the job it has to do, and checks its own work. The checking is the interesting half: it lints the page in a real browser against the tells that make something read as machine-made — the small label above every heading, tracked capitals, a single coloured word in a headline, a form that thanks you without sending anything. 8 The gates come in three tiers: a floor that never ships past — contrast, focus, a broken phone layout, invented facts — gates it can overrule if it records the reason, and finish checks that never block. 9
The limit is whose taste it is. Fifty themes and one linter mean the house style belongs to the repository, not to you, and a gate that refuses things is now part of your build. It needs Node 18, and the browser checks want Chrome and puppeteer-core installed; without them the static checks still run and the render check does not. 8
The test: point it at a page you shipped and quietly disliked, ask for the audit only, and see whether its list of tells matches the one you would have written.

ElevenLabs SFX v3

ElevenLabs made SFX v3 its latest sound-effects model this week. Describe the sound — a mechanism, a room, an ambience — and it returns four samples within seconds, royalty-free, with the description carrying the control over detail and character. 10
The pricing is the part worth saying out loud. A sound-effects generation costs 200 credits, and credits are one pool shared across speech, music, dubbing and the rest. The free plan is 10,000 credits a month, which is fifty requests. 11
The free plan does not include a commercial licence; that starts on the $6 Starter tier at 30,000 credits. 11 So a sound for a client's project costs six dollars a month at minimum, and it competes with your dubbing for the same credits.
The test: take the sound you keep paying a library for — a door, a notification, a room tone — and generate one request. Notice whether the keeper came in the first four samples or the fifth.

One test for all five

Five stand-ins: a builder for the developer who would have made your internal tool, a scan for the rig and the person who drives it, a voice in your phone for whoever answers the inbox, a skill file for the design pass, a model for the sound library.
None of them takes over the same thing, and it is the same thing every time. Runway will package a workflow but not choose one. Empacer drafts and waits. Hallmark knows the tells, not your taste. Echo-3 fills in the wall it never saw. SFX v3 hands you four options and a bill.
So the test that works on all five is one test. Give it a task you already know the answer to, and watch what it decided for you.
