New Releases Radar: September 25–October 2, 2026

A selective guide to 17 albums released September 25–October 2, 2026 across five genres, with the editorial picks, reviews and release-day signals behind each choice and a first track for every one.

Drake spent Thursday night adding four songs to the album he released in May, and Miranda Lambert, Quavo with Pharrell, and Victoria Monét all put out full records on the same Friday morning. Underneath the marquee names, the indie field ran deeper than it has all month: Greg Freeman's third album, Wishy's second, Fat Dog's follow-up to WOOF, and the first Helen record in eleven years. HotNewHipHop's Friday preview put the shape of the week plainly — labels are holding material back for next year, so the big releases cluster around a few names and the rest of the field is thin. 1
What can be checked on release morning is editorial picks, published reviews, release-day threads, and the playlists each record has landed on. First-week streaming totals and chart debuts arrive on their own weekly cycle, after release morning, so this piece leaves positions out rather than estimating them.

Indie / alternative

Greg Freeman — All Set The Bone

  • Artist: Greg Freeman
  • Album: All Set The Bone
  • Label: Transgressive
  • Genre: Indie rock, alt-folk
  • Release date: October 2, 2026 10
  • Signal: Stereogum named it Album of the Week on September 29, three days before release. NPR put it in the lightning round of its Friday show, and Radio Milwaukee led its new-music column with it. Its release thread on r/indieheads held 99 upvotes and 20 comments by Friday morning. 23411
  • Listening route: Bandcamp
  • Why spend time: Freeman's third album is 13 songs, made with producer John Congleton in Los Angeles after Freeman left his Burlington home and his jobs as a cemetery landscaper and a line cook. He rehearsed the band for a few weeks in the California desert — longtime collaborators Garrett Linck and Sam Atallah, Florry's Joey Sullivan, and the Rockin Worms' Carney Hemler — and brought in songwriters Anna McClellan and Trinity Ace to sing above and below his creaking voice. The heavier passages lean on Freeman's Fugazi and Unwound records, as on "Hail Mary," where math-rock chords snap against post-hardcore distortion; "Untitled 10" swings from metal into weeping violin with brass punches. The lyrics circle time and history: the opener "Cahokia" takes its name from the Indigenous mounds across the Mississippi from St. Louis, whose builders left no account of themselves. 410
  • First listen: "Cahokia." The opening track states the record's terms in one burst of guitar, and it is the title Freeman built the album's theme around. 10
Pick All Set The Bone if you want the record with the most editorial weight behind it this week and you have an hour to give it.

Wishy — Nature's Pill

  • Artist: Wishy
  • Album: Nature's Pill
  • Label: Winspear
  • Genre: Dream-pop, indie rock
  • Release date: October 2, 2026 12
  • Signal: NPR put it in the Starting 5, the five albums its Friday show discusses at length. Radio Milwaukee's Lilliput Records pick for the week was this album. Its r/indieheads release thread drew 164 upvotes and 27 comments by Friday morning, the busiest indie thread of the day. 3413
  • Listening route: Bandcamp
  • Why spend time: Wishy's second album runs 12 songs, and Radio Milwaukee hears the band's usual mix sharpened rather than softened: "sugary dream-pop, indie rock and grunge," with singalong choruses carrying lyrics about romantic frustration and the melodrama of ordinary life. The tracklist moves from "All the Rage" and "Covergirl" through "Sensational," "Mona Lisa" and "Kiss Kiss Kiss" to the closer "Party World." If you liked the band's debut, this is the same songwriting with the guitars pushed harder. 412
  • First listen: "All the Rage." The opening track, and the fastest way to hear how much louder the band let itself get. 12
Pick Nature's Pill if you want thirty-five minutes of loud, melodic guitar pop and the week's most upvoted indie thread is your idea of a recommendation.

Helen — Linda's Head

  • Artist: Helen
  • Album: Linda's Head
  • Label: kranky
  • Genre: Dream-pop, shoegaze
  • Release date: October 2, 2026 14
  • Signal: NPR gave it the third spot in the Starting 5. Its r/indieheads release thread went up at the top of the day. 315
  • Listening route: Apple Music
  • Why spend time: Helen is Liz Harris of Grouper on guitar and vocals, with Scott Simmons on bass and Jed Bindeman on drums. The trio put out one album, 2015's The Original Faces, and then went quiet for eleven years. Linda's Head is 10 songs in 31 minutes, and Apple Music's notes describe Harris's reverb-drenched voice applied to songs considerably hookier and riffier than her Grouper material, with lyrics about dead sharks, half-remembered dreams and the sea that stay just out of reach. The band released "Dead Shark II" and the title track ahead of the album. 14
  • First listen: "Dead Shark II." One of the two tracks the band put out early, and the clearest sign that this project has more tune under the haze than Grouper does. 14
Pick Linda's Head if you have followed Grouper and want the version of that sound that hums.

Dev Lemons — hunting what we already killed

  • Artist: Dev Lemons
  • Album: hunting what we already killed
  • Label: self-released
  • Genre: Bedroom pop
  • Release date: October 2, 2026 16
  • Signal: Radio Milwaukee picked it in its Friday column. Its r/indieheads release thread held 108 upvotes and 36 comments by Friday morning, one of the more argumentative threads of the day. Apple Music filed it under New in Alternative and New in Indie. 41617
  • Listening route: Apple Music
  • Why spend time: The second album from Devon Marie Vonder Schmalz is 11 songs in 36 minutes, and Apple Music files it as '90s-indebted bedroom pop. Radio Milwaukee describes a wider reach than that suggests — shimmering shoegaze, soulful bedroom pop and emo in the same record — and notes that the extra layers arrived alongside the short horror-comedy videos she posts to TikTok, which borrow their look from early Windows clip art. Three songs came out ahead of the album with videos: "eat the pavement," "only one way to know" and "Best Friend." 416
  • First listen: "Best Friend." The most recent single, and the one where the pop hook and the fuzz sit closest together. 16
Pick hunting what we already killed if you want a short record that keeps changing its mind.

Sons of Sevilla — It Could Be Today

  • Artist: Sons of Sevilla
  • Album: It Could Be Today
  • Label: Ubiquity Records
  • Genre: Garage soul, psych-pop
  • Release date: October 2, 2026 18
  • Signal: NPR gave it the last of the five Starting 5 slots. An earlier single from the same sessions, "Forever Heaven," reached No. 3 on KCRW's Top 30 chart and was played on BBC Radio 6. 318
  • Listening route: Apple Music
  • Why spend time: Sons of Sevilla are brothers Henry and Reuben Vaun Smith, who started recording together in Featherstone, a former coal-mining village in West Yorkshire, and named the project after a city their family visited on holidays. Their third album is 10 tracks produced by Skinshape, and the press notes describe the sound as sun-dappled garage soul, with the title track — written in California while the pair toured the US with their live band — setting strings against a slow groove. The tracklist runs from "Drive By Honey" and the title song to "Colours Of The Garden." 18
  • First listen: "Drive By Honey." The lead single, and the one that shows how much space the production leaves around Reuben Vaun Smith's voice. 18
Pick It Could Be Today if this week's louder records need a counterweight and you like soul with a West Coast shimmer on it.

Hip-hop / R&B

Quavo — QRÖMELIFE

  • Artist: Quavo
  • Album: QRÖMELIFE
  • Label: Quality Control Music / Motown Records
  • Genre: Rap, pop rap
  • Release date: October 2, 2026 5
  • Signal: Pharrell executive-produced the album and made every beat on it; HotNewHipHop's Friday preview called it a possible late contender for album of the year. Its r/hiphopheads release thread drew 278 upvotes and 99 comments by Friday morning. Apple Music placed it on Rap Life. 1519
  • Listening route: Apple Music
  • Why spend time: Quavo's third solo album runs 14 songs in 37 minutes and is the most upbeat record he has made on his own, with Pharrell steering him toward funk and the slower end of Southern rap rather than the trap he usually trades in. T.I. turns up on "Backwards"; Yung Miami sings on "HAOYU DEWDAT," built on Young Bleed's 1998 No Limit single "How Ya Do Dat"; Justin Timberlake joins "House Music." The album's centrepiece is "Away," a sequel of sorts to Migos' 2017 Pharrell collaboration "Stir Fry" and the first track Quavo and Offset have shared since 2021. 520
  • First listen: "Away." Apple Music calls it the album's biggest moment, and it is the one track here with a story attached that outruns the music. 5
Pick QRÖMELIFE if you want the rap record of the week with the clearest point of view behind it.

Victoria Monét — Frequency Of Love

  • Artist: Victoria Monét
  • Album: Frequency Of Love
  • Label: RCA Records
  • Genre: R&B, soul
  • Release date: October 2, 2026 21
  • Signal: NPR made it the first of the five albums its Friday show discusses, ahead of Meshell Ndegeocello and Wishy. Apple Music put it on R&B Now and A-List Pop. 321
  • Listening route: Apple Music
  • Why spend time: Monét's second full-length is 22 songs in 63 minutes and wears its record collection openly, drawing on Brandy, Kenny Lattimore and Ashford & Simpson. The Bruno Mars duet "That's Why I Love You" is built out of the 1960s bolero-pop song "Ritornerai"; SZA sings on the hazy "See You in My Dreams," Lucky Daye on "Maybe," and Chlöe on the house-leaning "Lose Myself." Leon Thomas and Monét's daughter, Hazel Monét, both appear on "You Mean the World to Me." The guest list is long, and Apple Music's notes argue it never takes the record over. 21
  • First listen: "That's Why I Love You." The Bruno Mars duet, and the album's clearest demonstration of how far Monét is willing to push a standard. 21
Pick Frequency Of Love if you want the week's biggest R&B record and you are happy to take it over an hour.

Meshell Ndegeocello — Synonym

  • Artist: Meshell Ndegeocello
  • Album: Synonym
  • Label: Blue Note Records
  • Genre: Neo-soul, covers
  • Release date: October 2, 2026 22
  • Signal: NPR put it second in the Starting 5, behind only Victoria Monét. Apple Music placed it on Jazz Soul Café, Soul Revival and ALT-R&B. 322
  • Listening route: Apple Music
  • Why spend time: Synonym is 15 songs in 62 minutes of other people's songs, every one of them sung with someone else — a companion to Ndegeocello's 2018 covers album Ventriloquism with the duets built in from the start. Chaka Khan takes Dolly Parton's part on "Islands in the Stream" while Ndegeocello sings Kenny Rogers'; Cynthia Erivo and Ndegeocello strip the George Michael and Aretha Franklin duet "I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me)" down to piano and saxophone; Cat Power shares a bass-heavy "Don't You Want Me." Brandi Carlile, WILLOW, Robert Glasper, Lianne La Havas, Moses Sumney, ANOHNI, Bill Callahan and Nick Hakim are among the rest. 2022
  • First listen: "Don't You Want Me." The Human League song rebuilt around Ndegeocello's bass and Cat Power's voice, and the one with a video already out. 22
Pick Synonym if you like your soul singing paired up, and you would rather hear a song rebuilt than covered straight.

Drake — HABIBTI (FOMO)

  • Artist: Drake
  • Album: HABIBTI (FOMO)
  • Label: OVO / Republic Records
  • Genre: Rap, R&B
  • Release date: October 1, 2026 23
  • Signal: It is the most-argued-about release of the week. Its r/hiphopheads thread held 325 upvotes and 354 comments by Friday morning at an upvote ratio near 65 percent. HotNewHipHop's Friday preview said Drake was out to take the spotlight from a thin field, and Apple Music has it on Rap Life and R&B Now. 12324
  • Listening route: Apple Music
  • Why spend time: Four new songs are the whole of it. HABIBTI (FOMO) is May's HABIBTI expanded from 11 tracks to 15, 49 minutes in total, and the additions include a remix of "Choosin' Texas" with Don Toliver and a turn from Yebba. Drake's rollout for the wider FOMO project is what put it here this week. If you already know the album, this is a short listen rather than a new one. 123
  • First listen: The new "Choosin' Texas" remix with Don Toliver. Lambert co-wrote the original, which makes the pairing worth hearing on its own. 125
Pick HABIBTI (FOMO) if you are following the FOMO rollout and want to know exactly what changed.

Electronic

Emily A. Sprague — Cyano

  • Artist: Emily A. Sprague
  • Album: Cyano
  • Label: RVNG Intl.
  • Genre: Ambient
  • Release date: October 2, 2026 6
  • Signal: Apple Music placed it on New in Indie, Indie Electronic, Arthouse and New in Alternative, and its r/indieheads thread went up at midnight. 626
  • Listening route: Apple Music
  • Why spend time: Sprague has kept two careers apart: indie folk with the band Florist, wordless synthesizer music under her own name. Cyano is the first album to put them in the same room, setting her voice over 14 short synth pieces, 47 minutes in all. Apple Music's notes place the results between the Japanese ambient compilations of the 1980s and the spacier end of late-'90s IDM, and point to "Double Moon," "Sing To," "Under Tone" and "Noon Liquid Ore." Where her earlier instrumentals stretched out, these pieces are built like a thought you have on a walk. 6
  • First listen: "Double Moon." The track Apple Music names first, and the one where the singing and the synthesizers sit closest together. 6
Pick Cyano if you want one record this week that rewards headphones and a quiet room.

Fat Dog — Cancel Me (I'm Tired)

  • Artist: Fat Dog
  • Album: Cancel Me (I'm Tired)
  • Label: Domino
  • Genre: Dance-punk, techno-rock
  • Release date: October 2, 2026 7
  • Signal: Radio Milwaukee picked it alongside Wishy, Greg Freeman and Dev Lemons in its Friday column. Record Collector reviewed it on release, and musicOMH gave it three stars out of five on October 1. Its r/indieheads thread drew 104 upvotes and 9 comments. 472728
  • Listening route: Bandcamp
  • Why spend time: Fat Dog formed in London in 2020 and made their name on live shows; this is the follow-up to 2024's WOOF, and Radio Milwaukee reports that the 10 songs are messier and more ambitious than the debut rather than a copy of it. The title track was written after John Lennon's "How Do You Sleep," and frontman Joe Love describes it as what the Turkish psych band Altın Gün might sound like under a thumping club beat. Across the record the band moves through rave tracks, electro-pop, a cowboy detour and psychedelia, with lyrics about addiction, family, love, AI and extraterrestrials. Record Collector hears the band reaching well beyond the chaos of the first album into dance-punk, techno and darkwave. 427
  • First listen: "Cancel Me (I'm Tired)." The title track came out ahead of the album and sets out both the frustration and the club tempo. 4
Pick Cancel Me (I'm Tired) if you want the record here that is most likely to be too much at eleven in the morning.

Classical

Handel: Messiah — English Baroque Soloists, Monteverdi Choir, Christophe Rousset

  • Artist: Ana Vieira Leite (soprano), Sarah Connolly (mezzo), Andrew Staples (tenor), William Thomas (bass), English Baroque Soloists, Monteverdi Choir, Christophe Rousset
  • Album: Handel: Messiah
  • Label: Harmonia Mundi (HMM90542829)
  • Genre: Oratorio
  • Release date: October 2, 2026 8
  • Signal: Presto Music led its weekly round-up with the recording. It is the first release in a new long-term partnership between the Monteverdi Choir and Orchestras and Harmonia Mundi, and the follow-up, Theodora, is due to be recorded this month with Marie Lys, Iestyn Davies and Alice Coote. 8
  • Listening route: Presto stream
  • Why spend time: The recording was made live during last year's European tour, runs 2 hours 12 minutes, and puts a quartet of soloists — Vieira Leite, Connolly, Staples and Thomas — in front of Rousset's direction of the English Baroque Soloists and the Monteverdi Choir. Presto's round-up quotes two reviews of the London concert it came from: The Arts Desk found the performance as fresh as if the work had been written yesterday, and The Telegraph singled out the choral singing as surpassingly vivid. The CD set includes a digital booklet. 829
  • First listen: The "Hallelujah" chorus. The most famous four minutes in the work, and the fastest way to judge the choir. 29
Pick Messiah if you want the week's strongest classical release and a two-hour sit is no obstacle.

Mahler: Symphony No. 2 — Louise Alder, Beth Taylor, Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, Sir Simon Rattle

  • Artist: Louise Alder (soprano), Beth Taylor (mezzo), Symphonieorchester und Chor des Bayerischen Rundfunks, Sir Simon Rattle
  • Album: Mahler: Symphony No. 2 "Auferstehungssinfonie"
  • Label: BR Klassik
  • Genre: Symphony
  • Release date: October 2, 2026 8
  • Signal: Presto's round-up picked it out of the week's releases, calling the concert it comes from one of those rare evenings that deepen your understanding of a work you thought you knew, in a quote from SeenAndHeardInternational. 8
  • Listening route: Presto stream
  • Why spend time: The recording is the next instalment in Rattle's Mahler cycle with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, after Symphonies Nos. 6, 7 and 9, and was broadcast from Munich's Isarphilharmonie in March. It runs 82 minutes across five movements, opening with a 22-minute Allegro and closing with a 34-minute finale that brings in the chorus, and the soloists are Louise Alder and Beth Taylor — the same Beth Taylor whose own debut recital is below. BR Klassik also lists a digital booklet with the release. 830
  • First listen: "Urlicht." The five-minute fourth movement, where Taylor's voice enters before the finale, and the shortest route into the performance. 30
Pick the Rattle Resurrection if you already know the symphony and want a performance built over fifty years of living with it.

Beth Taylor & Hamish Brown — The Deeps Have Music

  • Artist: Beth Taylor (mezzo-soprano), Hamish Brown (piano)
  • Album: The Deeps Have Music
  • Label: Linn (CKD794)
  • Genre: Song recital
  • Release date: October 2, 2026 31
  • Signal: Presto's round-up gave it a slot, and NPR's Friday show put it in its lightning round of records the staff could not fit into the main discussion. 38
  • Listening route: Presto stream
  • Why spend time: This is the Scottish mezzo's debut recital album, and it is built around one idea: the sea. The centrepiece is Elgar's Sea Pictures, heard in the composer's own piano score, which Brown plays with additions of his own. Around it sit Hamilton Harty's arrangement of "My Lagan Love," Hedwige Chrétien's Petits Poèmes au bord de l'eau, Ethel Smyth's Moods of the Sea, songs by Schubert and Alma Mahler, and the first recording of Cameron Biles-Liddell's The Breakers, a 13-minute piece written for this album. It runs 80 minutes. Taylor placed as a finalist at the 2023 BBC Cardiff Singer of the World and has since sung with the Berlin and Vienna Philharmonics. 831
  • First listen: "Where Corals Lie." The fourth of the Sea Pictures songs, and the one that shows the voice and the piano arrangement working as a pair. 31
Pick The Deeps Have Music if you want a classical entry point that runs on one clear idea and a well-known voice.

Country / roots

Miranda Lambert — Crisco

  • Artist: Miranda Lambert
  • Album: Crisco
  • Label: MCA Nashville / Vanner Records
  • Genre: Country
  • Release date: October 2, 2026 25
  • Signal: NPR's Friday show put it in the lightning round. Apple Music has it on Today's Country and The Sand Bar. 325
  • Listening route: Apple Music
  • Why spend time: Lambert's first album for MCA Nashville is 12 songs in 38 minutes, co-produced with Jesse Frasure and following 2024's Postcards from Texas. She has two well-chosen guests: Ella Langley joins "Snakeskin Boots," and Chris Stapleton harmonizes on the synth-backed "A Song to Sing," which is followed by Lambert's version of Jim Croce's "I'll Have to Say I Love You in a Song." Apple Music's notes point to "Cowgirl Curtsy" as the tear-in-your-beer song and "Till The Going's Gone" as the one with the nervous energy. Country Standard Time confirms the release and the label. 925
  • First listen: "A Song to Sing." The Stapleton duet came out with a video before the album and is the week's most obvious country playlist candidate. 25
Pick Crisco if you want the biggest country release of the morning and you like Lambert best with a co-writer.

Wynonna — The Hard Truth

  • Artist: Wynonna
  • Album: The Hard Truth
  • Label: Anti- Records
  • Genre: Country, roots
  • Release date: October 2, 2026 9
  • Signal: Country Standard Time lists it among the four records arriving on October 2, noting that it is her first studio album for Anti-. 9
  • Listening route: Apple Music
  • Why spend time: Two firsts sit behind this record: it is Wynonna's first studio album for Anti-, and the first time she has written songs with other people rather than keeping the writing to herself. Her husband, Cactus Moser, produced it. The album runs 11 songs in 43 minutes, and three songs came out with videos: "Am I Missing Out," "Kentucky Queen" and "Girl Who Could Sing." Anti- is the label that has handled weathered, deliberate records for decades, and this one sits in that line. 932
  • First listen: "Kentucky Queen." One of the three tracks released early, and the one closest to the voice people come to Wynonna for. 32
Pick The Hard Truth if you want a country record by someone with thirty years of context behind her, made by the people closest to her.

Allison de Groot & Rich Ruth — Allison de Groot & Rich Ruth

  • Artist: Allison de Groot (banjo), Rich Ruth
  • Album: Allison de Groot & Rich Ruth
  • Label: Western Vinyl (WV308)
  • Genre: Ambient Americana, kosmische folk
  • Release date: October 2, 2026 33
  • Signal: NPR's Friday show put it in the lightning round. 3
  • Listening route: Apple Music
  • Why spend time: The album began as a Rich Ruth–produced solo record for de Groot and turned into eight tracks of joint writing over roughly a year in Ruth's Nashville studio. De Groot is a Winnipeg clawhammer banjo player who has won the Steve Martin Prize for Excellence in Banjo and been nominated as an Americana Music Association Instrumentalist of the Year; Ruth is the recording project of multi-instrumentalist Michael Ruth, who works in ambient, spiritual jazz and synth-driven post-rock. Her banjo runs through looping and delay and gathers krautrock momentum before his synthesizers take over, with Patrick M'Gonigle's violin and string arrangements and Spencer Cullum's pedal steel around the edges. The two finished on a deadline they set themselves and debuted the material live at the Big Ears Festival. 3334
  • First listen: "Nervion." The opener and lead single, where pedal steel and distorted guitar ride over arpeggiated synths, banjo and vibraphone. 33
Pick Allison de Groot & Rich Ruth if you want the week's most unusual record and you are willing to give a banjo record an ambient ear.

First clicks

Two releases this weekend have more signal behind them than anything else in the list. Greg Freeman's All Set The Bone holds Stereogum's Album of the Week, an NPR lightning-round slot and the loudest indie release thread of the day, and it is the record to start with if you only have time for one. If you want the country record, Miranda Lambert's Crisco is the one with both an NPR pick and a place on Apple Music's main country playlist, and the Stapleton duet is a thirty-second way to decide. For something shorter and stranger, Helen's Linda's Head is 31 minutes from a band that waited eleven years to make it.
