This song is inspired by a real r/widowers post about a wife who died while giving birth, where a new father writes that he and his wife were meant to face this life together, and he is suddenly trying to find a way through alone.

The verses stay close to the shock and the ordinary responsibility that keeps arriving anyway. Piano and fingerpicked guitar hold the room in place before strings widen the chorus around its central promise: "I'll take the next breath slowly / like I'm taking it for two."
