Oklahoma adds B.J. Edwards, Gonzaga lands at No. 11, and the SEC women's slate lands
A week without regular-season scores still changed the 2026-27 outlook: Oklahoma added B.J. Edwards, Gonzaga’s preseason case reached No. 11 on CBS’s board, and the SEC women’s schedule set its first tests.
The Aug. 10–17 offseason produced no new scoreboard lesson. It did produce a clearer roster lesson: Oklahoma added a guard who can defend and create, Gonzaga strengthened its preseason case with two fifth-year additions, and the SEC women’s schedule finally showed where the conference race will be tested.
Men’s basketball: the late roster moves are becoming easier to judge
Oklahoma adds a defensive playmaker
Oklahoma signed B.J. Edwards on Aug. 14. The 6-foot-3 guard spent the past three seasons at SMU, where he averaged 12.7 points, 5.9 rebounds, 4.9 assists and 2.3 steals in 28 games in 2025–26. He earned honorable-mention All-ACC recognition and made the ACC All-Defensive Team for the second time. 1
The fit is straightforward. Oklahoma gets a guard who handled the ball, created shots and produced at the point of attack. Edwards also gives Porter Moser a veteran defensive piece rather than another projection. His last season ended with a late-February injury, so his availability belongs on the preseason checklist alongside his statistics. Oklahoma’s announcement did not attach a new recovery timetable. 1
That distinction matters in August. The production is documented; the next question is whether the player can carry it into November.
Gonzaga’s new pieces reach No. 11 on CBS’s board
CBS Sports’ Aug. 10 Top 25 And 1 update placed Gonzaga at No. 11 and kept Florida at No. 1. The board’s change came after Gonzaga added fifth-year guards Javon Bennett and Chauncey Wiggins. Bennett averaged 15.8 points and 2.9 assists at Dayton last season; Wiggins averaged 13.3 points and 3.9 rebounds at Florida State. 2
This is a useful ranking update because the reason is visible. Gonzaga did not move on reputation alone; CBS’s analyst board responded to two identifiable additions. The ranking still remains a preseason opinion. It is not the AP poll, coaches poll or NCAA NET ranking, and it does not tell us how the new backcourt will defend or share the ball.
USC adds size; Miami rewards a fast turnaround
Two other men’s updates point in different directions:
- USC signed 6-foot-10 Belgian center Onyeka Joe Agu, who is immediately eligible. Agu averaged 7.3 points and 5.7 rebounds in 18 BNXT League games last season, then posted 10.3 points, 6.0 rebounds and 1.8 blocks per game in November while shooting 66.6%. USC described him as its 11th newcomer in a roster with three returners and seven transfers. 3
- Miami extended coach Jai Lucas after a 26–9 first season that ended in the NCAA Tournament. FOX Sports, citing The Associated Press, reported that the deal included a raise and that Lucas had four years left on his original five-year contract; Miami did not disclose terms. 4
USC is still assembling a team. Miami is trying to keep a structure that already worked. Those are different kinds of offseason news, and both affect how much a preseason projection can trust continuity.
Women’s basketball: the SEC race now has dates attached
The SEC released its 2026–27 women’s basketball schedule on Aug. 11. Each team will play 16 conference games: 14 opponents once and one opponent twice. Arkansas’s official release also set the SEC Tournament for March 3–7, 2027, in Greenville, South Carolina. 5
The schedule does not create standings yet. It does show where the early pressure will land:
| Team | Conference opener | Dates that shape the first read | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tennessee | Dec. 31 at Texas A&M | Jan. 3 vs. Ole Miss; Jan. 28 vs. South Carolina; Feb. 25 vs. LSU | Ole Miss brings former Lady Vols Talaysia Cooper and Jaida Civil back to Knoxville. Tennessee also has road games at Texas and Vanderbilt. 6 |
| Georgia | Dec. 31 vs. Texas | Feb. 28 vs. South Carolina | Georgia enters its first season under Ayla Guzzardo with 15 home games and a Cancun Challenge before the league schedule settles the comparison. 7 |
| Arkansas | Dec. 31 at Vanderbilt | Mississippi State home and away | The Razorbacks have one repeat opponent in the new 16-game structure, while the conference tournament returns to Greenville in March. 5 |
The practical takeaway is simple: the SEC’s schedule creates a comparison set before anyone has a conference record. Tennessee’s first meaningful read will involve a former-player reunion and several ranked-program tests. Georgia’s will involve a new coach, a heavy home slate and a Texas opener. Arkansas’s schedule gives the league’s repeat-opponent rule a concrete shape.
What the week does not tell us yet
There were no new regular-season results or conference standings to carry into this issue. The verified items also did not provide a current AP poll, coaches poll, NCAA NET table, women’s national ranking, dated KenPom efficiency snapshot or weekly game-leader list. The only current ranking claim above is explicitly CBS Sports’ preseason analyst board.
That leaves a narrower but more honest preseason read. Oklahoma’s Edwards signing changes the Sooners’ defensive and ball-handling options, Gonzaga’s No. 11 projection now has two named additions behind it, and the SEC women’s race has its first calendar of tests. The next useful update will come from availability, lineup fit and actual games—not from treating August projections as standings.
