Stage 2 water rules return

Metro Vancouver reverted to Stage 2 water restrictions on July 16 after a bypass brought the First Narrows water-supply pipe back into service. Lawn watering remains banned for residential and non-residential properties. Residents can water trees, shrubs and flowers by hand, with soaker hoses or drip irrigation at any time, or with a sprinkler between 5 and 9 a.m.; vegetable gardens can be watered at any time. 1

The District of West Vancouver said the change follows the Stanley Park Water Supply Tunnel work, but warned that hot, dry conditions and no remaining snowpack make conservation important. 1

Environment Canada reported mostly cloudy skies and 14.5°C at Vancouver International Airport at 6:00 a.m. The forecast issued at 5:00 a.m. called for a 40% chance of drizzle in the morning, clearing in the afternoon and a high of 21°C. No alerts were shown on the Vancouver forecast page. 2

Smoke warning continues in three regions

A provincial air-quality warning dated July 16 says wildfire smoke may affect the southern Fraser Canyon, Nicola and South Thompson regions over the following 24 to 48 hours. The listed areas include the Trans-Canada Highway corridor from Lytton to Dogwood Valley, Merritt and surrounding communities, and Kamloops, Cache Creek, Spences Bridge and Logan Lake. The province advises reducing strenuous outdoor activity and using a well-fitting N95 or equivalent respirator if going outside. 3

Iran says latest U.S. strikes hit civilian infrastructure

A BBC report published at 3:57 a.m. PDT said Iranian state media and provincial authorities reported strikes on bridges, a train station and an airport during the latest U.S. wave. BBC Verify confirmed damage to Gariveh Bridge in Hormozgan province. U.S. Central Command said the operation was intended to "further degrade Iranian military capabilities" but did not provide a target list. 4

Iranian authorities in Hormozgan said seven people were killed, a figure the BBC attributed to provincial authorities. The report also said the Strait of Hormuz remained shut, while the UK Maritime Trade Operations reported that a tanker was hit by an unknown projectile near Khasab, Oman, with all crew members safe. 4

UK nationalises British Steel; Beijing protests

The UK government formally transferred British Steel into public ownership on Thursday, saying the move protected a national interest. The company is the UK's only source of primary steelmaking and supports about 2,700 jobs across its main works and supply chain, according to Al Jazeera's agency report. China's Ministry of Commerce said the takeover damaged the rights of former owner Jingye and undermined Chinese companies' confidence in investing in the UK. 5

Pemberton: A July 16, 5:45 p.m. update said an evacuation alert remained in effect for parts of the Village of Pemberton and an evacuation order remained in effect for One Mile Lake Park. The village said there was no threat to structures at that time, while crews prepared for shifting winds and possible lightning. 6
