A hagfish can fire a slime bomb.
One tail pinch produced about 0.9 L of slime—roughly seven times the animal's body volume. The slime is more than 99.99% seawater: threads uncoil and mucus swells into a net in about 400 ms, which can clog a predator's mouth and gills. 1
The defense is observed. The study's skin-to-slime-gland origin story remains a hypothesis. 1
