Ningbo's last nine lifters, Paris's last Masters and Shenzhen's Grand Prix: Team USA watch, Nov. 2–8

A planning brief for Nov. 2–8, 2026: weightlifting's World Championships close in Ningbo with nine Americans left to lift, tennis plays its last Masters 1000 of the season in Paris, and figure skating's Cup of China lands in Shenzhen — with the Eastern times and what each event counts toward.

Olympic Qualifier & World Championship Schedule
Olympic Qualifier & World Championship Schedule@NeoDrop Official
This issue covers Nov. 2–8, 2026. Weightlifting's World Championships close in Ningbo with nine Americans still to lift, and every total goes into the ranking that fills the Los Angeles weight classes in 2028. 1
Tennis plays its last Masters 1000 of the season in Paris, with seven American men in the draw. The ranking behind that tournament is the one LA28 will read, on a fixed date in 2028. 2
Figure skating reaches Shenzhen for the third of six Grand Prix stops. Those points lead to the Final in Chongqing on Dec. 10–13. 3

What changed since last week

Jessica McClain finished second in New York, the first American woman on the podium since Shalane Flanagan in 2018. McClain ran 2:24:42, catching Hellen Obiri in the last 200 meters; Sheila Chepkirui won in 2:24:36, and Obiri held third in 2:24:43. 4
Three more American women finished in the top eight. Carrie Ellwood was sixth in 2:26:28, Weini Kelati seventh in 2:26:51 in her marathon debut, and Paige Wood eighth in 2:27:29. 4
Andreas Almgren won the men's race at his first marathon, in 2:06:01, thirteen seconds clear of Yemaneberhan Crippa. Zouhair Talbi was the first American home, sixth in 2:06:43, with Ahmed Muhumed seventh in 2:07:08 and Ryan Ford tenth in 2:07:17. 5
Conner Mantz led at 35K and finished outside the top ten. The American record holder was still in the front group when Almgren broke away over the final 7.2 kilometers. 5
Marcel Hug and Catherine Debrunner swept the wheelchair races. Hug beat Daniel Romanchuk by a second, 1:28:14 to 1:28:15. Debrunner won in 1:40:02, with Tatyana McFadden second in 1:48:28 and Susannah Scaroni third in 1:48:32. 6
Hampton Morris took bronze at 65 kg after a jury reversed his last lift. Morris snatched 143 kg and clean and jerked 185 kg for a world record. His 189 kg attempt would have given him 332 kg and the first American men's world title since 1969. The jury overturned the lift for bending and extending the elbow. 78
Miranda Ulrey took silver at 53 kg, one kilogram behind Zhang Haiqin. Ulrey's 220 kg total was an international career best by 4 kg, and her last clean and jerk at 122 kg came after a missed opener. 9
Katie Estep finished sixth at 61 kg with 234 kg. Sophie Shaft missed her clean and jerks at 130 kg and posted no total, in a session where Pei Xinyi set world records in the clean and jerk and the total. 7
Ryan Grimsland and Edward Ginnan placed 12th and 13th at 75 kg, at 334 kg and 332 kg. Gabe Chhum made his opening snatch at 60 kg, missed his next two attempts and withdrew without a total. 10
Alisa Efimova and Misha Mitrofanov took pairs silver at Skate Canada, scoring 191.90 behind Lia Pereira and Trennt Michaud's 202.17. Liam Kapeikis finished 12th in the men's event at 189.01. 1112
Isabeau Levito sits second after the short program at 78.50, behind Mao Shimada's 82.11. Caroline Green and Michael Parsons are third after the rhythm dance at 74.24. The women's free skate and the free dance were still to come on Sunday afternoon in Kelowna. 1314

What New York left the Trials

New York sits inside the qualifying window for the 2028 U.S. Olympic Team Trials, which runs from Sept. 1, 2025 to Jan. 17, 2028. The entry standards are 2:16:00 for men and 2:37:00 for women, and St. Louis hosts the Trials on March 25, 2028, where three men and three women earn Olympic places. 2324
Seven Americans finished Sunday's races inside those standards. On the men's side that is Talbi at 2:06:43, Muhumed at 2:07:08 and Ford at 2:07:17; on the women's side McClain at 2:24:42, Ellwood at 2:26:28, Kelati at 2:26:51 and Wood at 2:27:29. 45
The Trials A standard is the second route, and it carries travel and accommodation support. A top-10 finish at a platinum-label marathon inside the window is one way to meet it, and New York holds that label. Talbi in sixth, Ford in tenth and McClain in second added it to their times. 23

The last week in Ningbo

The counting rule decides how much these sessions matter. A lifter needs five qualifying events across two periods, and the ranking sums their best three totals from Period 1 and best two from Period 2, one kilogram to one point. 1
Period 1 covers six events, from Ningbo through the 2027 World Championships next September, and a lifter needs three totals inside it. Ningbo is the first of those six, which makes this week's numbers the ones the rest of the period gets measured against. 16
Eight places are available in each Olympic weight class. A country can send at most six lifters, three per gender, spread across three classes. 1
Mattie Rogers lifts at 77 kg on Thursday at 6 a.m. ET, in her tenth world championships. She has 14 senior world medals, nine silver and five bronze, the second-most by an American woman behind Robin Goad's 19. 15
Mary Theisen-Lappen closes the American week at +86 kg on Sunday at 3:30 a.m. ET. The Paris Olympian has four world medals, two of them silver at her 2023 debut, where she totaled 277 kg. 15

Nicholson holds the American 86 kg records in all three lifts after a guest appearance at the British Championships. Thilges won the 2026 national title at +86 kg, and Witte took clean and jerk and total bronze at 86 kg at the Pan American Championships. 15
Two American men arrive with continental titles behind them. Caden Cahoy, the 2024 junior world champion, lifts at 85 kg on Monday after a 204 kg clean and jerk at the 2026 Pan American Championships set a senior continental record. Kolbi Ferguson swept silver at 110 kg at the same meet with 397 kg. 15

The LA28 read

Ningbo builds an Olympic ranking. Every total this week is a candidate for the three scores Period 1 will count. 1
Paris builds a ranking that LA28 reads in 2028. The 56 direct places in each singles draw come from the rankings of June 12, 2028, so this week's points decide the ATP Finals field in Turin and the year-end order. 2
Shenzhen builds a Grand Prix season. The top six in each discipline reach Chongqing in December, and figure skating's Olympic path runs through the next Winter Games cycle. 3
