DeFi Week 41: TVL slips 0.25% as Balancer votes to wind down

DeFi TVL held near $95.3B, down 0.25%, as Balancer's holders voted to shut the protocol down, a $3.65B LayerZero "gain" proved a data step, and NEAR Intents lost and recovered $3.8M.

DeFi TVL Ranking & Protocol Anomalies
DeFi TVL Ranking & Protocol Anomalies@NeoDrop Official
DeFi's aggregate total value locked finished the weekly window at $95.2528B, the daily snapshot for 4 October, down $238.4M or 0.2497% from $95.4912B on 28 September. 1
Ether barely moved across the same seven days, from $2,687.54 to $2,686.89. 2 Because balances are valued at current prices, a flat ether price is what strips repricing out of the headline: the same book measured in ether went from 35.531M to 35.451M ETH, down 0.2258%. 1 In ether terms this was a small net withdrawal, not a flat market.
The scheduled window runs from 28 September to 5 October 2026, 10:00 GMT-5, and the TVL series uses the nearest daily historical balances rather than hour-level readings. Two events set the tone. Balancer, an automated market maker running since 2020, won approval from its token holders to wind itself down and distribute what is left of its treasury. 3 Three days later NEAR Intents, a cross-chain trading system, reported a $3.8 million bug in its deposit and withdrawal path, paused services on eleven networks, and then recovered the money when the attacker returned it. 4

The book went sideways, and ether's flatness made that meaningful

The aggregate traced a shallow dip and recovery rather than a trend: $95.4912B on 28 September, $94.7959B on 29 September, a low of $94.7644B on 30 September, then $94.8069B, $95.1866B, $95.0042B and $95.2528B through 4 October. 1 Nothing in the series moves more than 0.7% from the previous day.

In a week like the last one, when ether rose nearly 2%, a flat dollar figure would have hidden withdrawals. This week the price term is close to zero, so the dollar move and the flow move are the same move, and this one is slightly negative.

Where the book sits, and which chains moved

The chain endpoint totals $96.805B across 468 tracked networks at its latest reading, with Ethereum holding $54.416B, or 56.212%. 13 That endpoint returns current balances, so on its own it shows where the book sits rather than how it moved. The 7-day column below comes from each chain's own daily series between 28 September and 4 October. 14

Avalanche$0.643B0.664% 13+2.18% 24
Three of these moves change meaning once the chain's own token is put back in. Solana's book fell 0.34% in dollars while SOL fell 1.93%, which leaves the chain up 1.62% in SOL terms — deposits arrived in a falling market. 12 Base rose 1.80% against an ether price that was flat, which is a deposit move of the same size. 16 Hyperliquid L1 fell 6.45% while HYPE fell 2.59%, leaving it down 3.96% in HYPE terms — the second consecutive weekly outflow for a chain that led the board two weeks ago. 25 The protocol side carries the same signal: Kinetiq kHYPE, the chain's liquid staking derivative, fell 9.34% on its own daily series. 26
Arbitrum and Polygon were the two weakest chains by percentage, and both declines were spread across the week rather than made in one step.

Protocol ranking: a bridge's jump that nothing passed through

The screen covers non-exchange protocols with at least $50M in current TVL. Before-balances are back-calculated as current TVL divided by (1 + change_7d / 100) and are labelled as such; dollar moves are rounded to the nearest $0.1M. 5
DeFiLlama's change_7d measures the latest snapshot against the same clock time seven days earlier, while the aggregate figures above come from daily snapshots, so the two bases disagree for protocols whose intraday value moved sharply at the edges of the window. Where the disagreement changes the direction of a move, both readings appear below.

The LayerZero V2 entry is the one number in these tables a reader should discount. A single chain's balance moving from $32M to $3.86B in one day is a coverage or accounting change; Polygon's own chain TVL was flat across the same days, at $759M, and no first-party announcement explains a deposit of that size. 6 Read it as the feed counting something it was not counting before, and not as $3.65B of capital arriving.
Two other balances moved in one-day steps with no explanation attached. Sentora Curator, a risk curator whose TVL is the sum of deposits in vaults it manages, lost $421M on Ethereum on 29 September while its other chains held steady. 7 Lista CDP, a BNB Chain collateralized-debt protocol, shed 60% of its book in a day on 1 October. 34 Neither published an explanation inside the window.
On the gain side, Falcon Finance's 37% increase is the largest that is not a coverage artifact. Falcon Finance is a synthetic-dollar protocol that mints USDf against collateral, and its book stepped from $1.21B to $1.66B in four days on Ethereum alone; the protocol published no dated announcement inside the window, so the cause stays unresolved. 28
The direction of the largest lending and staking books also diverged from last week. Aave V3, Lido, SSV Network and Binance staked ETH all fell in the previous week; all four rose this week, on the feed's basis, while the bridges and newer venues that led last week's table mostly slipped or slowed. 5

Security: an Omni bug, a spoofed Safe check, and a PancakeSwap pair

Three incidents fell inside the window, totalling $4,288,482.88 on the amounts the DeFiLlama feed carries. 8
ProtocolChainLoss amountAttack vectorRemediation status
NEAR IntentsBSC, and 10 further networks$3,800,000 8Bridge logic flaw in the Omni deposit and withdrawal path 4Contract patched; deposits and withdrawals paused on eleven networks; attacker returned all funds on 2 October. 4
FlashLoopAdapterEthereum$305,000 8Improper access control; a spoofed Safe authentication check 36No protocol-level bailout; Aave V3 contracts unaffected. 36
SKYDAOBSC$183,483 8Swap logic flaw in the SKYDAO/USDT PancakeSwap V2 pair 8Undisclosed. 8
NEAR Intents is the one that matters for anyone routing cross-chain flow. The protocol lets users specify a swap and has independent market makers, called solvers, compete to fill it; its site says it has processed more than $30 billion of volume across 35 blockchains. 4 On 1 October the team traced $3.8 million of losses to a bug in how its Omni deposit and withdrawal system interacted with the NEAR Intents smart contract, patched the contract, and disabled deposits and withdrawals on BNB Smart Chain, Polygon, TON, Optimism, Avalanche, Stellar, Monad, X Layer, ADI, Scroll and Plasma. 4 The blockchain investigator ZachXBT said the exploit began with irregular withdrawals from a BNB Chain hot wallet linked to NEAR Intents, with the funds sent to KuCoin and bridged into bitcoin. 4 The team reported the incident to law enforcement and pledged full reimbursement, and on 2 October NEAR Protocol co-founder Illia Polosukhin said the exploiter had returned all the assets after the team identified the attacker and opened a channel to him. 4
FlashLoopAdapter is a failure at the integration layer rather than in a lending pool. The adapter is a custom contract that let Safes holding leveraged Aave V3 positions open and close those loops; on 1 October an attacker spoofed the adapter's Safe check, so a malicious contract could pose as a legitimate wallet and pass the verification. 36 The attacker used a Morpho WETH flash loan to repay roughly 1,335 WETH of Aave debt on one Safe, which unlocked its collateral, then withdrew about 1,306 weETH; a second Safe with the same owner lost 6.4 weETH through the same module. 36 The gross withdrawal is larger than the loss: after the borrowed funds were settled and some assets converted, the attacker retained about 114.09 ETH, or roughly $305,000. 36 Aave founder Stani Kulechov said the vulnerable component was an external integration and had zero effect on Aave V3. 36
SKYDAO is the smallest of the three. The feed records a swap logic flaw in its PancakeSwap V2 pair against USDT, with the loss booked at $183,483 and no published recovery status. 8

Governance: Balancer votes itself out

Snapshot's index lists 78 proposals that closed inside the window. The ones below changed protocol parameters, treasury control, or program eligibility, and each carries a final tally. 37 Snapshot votes are off-chain signals, and each outcome takes effect through the relevant DAO's own execution path.

Balancer's wind-down is the consequential outcome. BIP-928 drew 42 voters and 17.2 million BAL, and 99.2% of the votes cast backed one of the two Yes options — 12,179,932 for the version that treats tetuBAL at 50%, against 4,906,659 for the version that treats it at 100%. 9 The rival fork BIP-929, which would have kept pools running into 2027 under a new entity, lost 12,113,520 to 5,213,625. 38
The execution calendar is now fixed. Partners still moving v3 liquidity can request an extension by 16 October, which keeps those pools live through 30 November; on 30 October pausable pools become withdrawals-only and bug bounty coverage ends for every pool; the final v3 vault pause is 30 November; and treasury distribution opens at the end of May 2027. 3 The treasury goes out in kind and pro rata, with holders burning BAL to claim inside a six-month window after existing veBAL locks expire. 39 Marcus Hardt, the former Balancer Labs chief executive who wrote the plan, put the distributable treasury at about $9.96 million against 63.07 million redeemable BAL, or roughly $0.1579 per BAL, and called that his own measurement rather than an audited figure. 39 Balancer's v2 and v3 pools still held about $52.4 million combined when the vote closed. 39 Hardt proposed the wind-down on 14 September, citing about $150,000 in monthly costs against roughly $30,000 of protocol revenue in August; Balancer Labs had already announced the closure of its corporate entity in March, after an exploit drained about $128 million from v2 pools in November 2025. 39 The vote itself had to be reset once, after Balancer's Snapshot space moved to a one-BAL-one-vote strategy and a delegate-override bug left some long-held balances showing zero voting power. 3
Abracadabra's MIM wind-down is the opposite case: an overwhelming majority that changes nothing. The proposal drew 100,047,421 votes for and 523,446 against, from two addresses, against a quorum of 3 billion staked SPELL. 40 Turnout was 3.4% of quorum, and the eleven earlier proposals in that space, going back to December 2024, each drew more than 3 billion votes. 41 The plan would have liquidated what collateral remained and paid MIM holders pro rata, an amount the proposal put near $900,000 of actionable backing against about $21 million of bad debt. 41 With quorum unmet, the wind-down was not authorised and MIM holders have no recovery path from this vote.
Aave's four ARFCs all passed with For shares above 99.9%, and three of them sit close to the TVL changes above: the Sentora framework sets terms for a third-party curator to run Aave V4 vaults, days after the Sentora Curator book on Aave posted its own $421M step down. 42 The other three onboard syrupUSDC to Aave V4 on Arc, add the Neuberger Securitize high-income fund to Aave Horizon, and set out an institutional offering. 5051
Voting power stays concentrated. On Balancer's wind-down the ten largest addresses cast 11,178,229 of the 17,226,164 BAL used, or 64.9%, and the single largest cast 2,784,158, or 16.2% — and that one address voted for the 100% tetuBAL option rather than the one that passed. 37 On Gearbox's GIP-292, the two largest voters supplied 255 million of 371 million votes. 37 On G DAO's treasury bridge, one address cast 372,594,629 of 372,825,444. 37 Snapshot returns voter addresses without the delegate labels its interface shows, so the payload sizes the blocs without naming them. 37
Quorum is exposed for some spaces only. Balancer, Gearbox, G DAO, sdCRV and Horizen publish a threshold, and of those, Horizen's council election was the one that failed to reach it. Abracadabra publishes the 3 billion threshold that MIM's vote missed. Aave, Derive and ClearPool return 0 for the field, recorded here as an unpublished threshold rather than a cleared one. 37

Reward emissions supply between 90.3% and 99.997% of every other print in the table above. 10 The deeper pools are the ones where trading, rather than distribution, carries the return: Aerodrome's USDC-CBBTC holds $7.36M and prints 248.27%, of which base fees are 238.21%, and WETH-USDC holds $10.06M at 142.55% on $37.1M of daily volume. 10

Trader and yield farmer action checklist

  • Read the protocol tables in ether this week, because ether was flat. Lido, Morpho Blue, WBTC, SSV Network and Binance staked ETH all rose on the feed, while Aave V3's direction depends on which endpoint you read; the daily series puts it down 0.9%. 5
  • Discount LayerZero V2's +$3.65B. A single chain's balance moving from $32M to $3.86B in one day, with Polygon's own chain TVL flat, is a data change rather than deposits. 6
  • If you hold Balancer LP positions, diarise two dates. Pausable pools become withdrawals-only and bug bounty coverage ends on 30 October; partners who need longer must request an extension by 16 October to keep v3 pools live through 30 November. 3
  • Treat the ~$0.1579-per-BAL payout as an estimate, not a number. It is Hardt's own unaudited measurement, the treasury still has to be valued at the claim snapshot, and claims do not open until the end of May 2027. 39
  • Do not expect a MIM recovery from this vote. The wind-down passed overwhelmingly among the addresses that voted, but turnout was 3.4% of the 3 billion quorum, so nothing was authorised. 41
  • Re-check any cross-chain route you depend on NEAR Intents for. Deposits and withdrawals were disabled on eleven networks including BNB Smart Chain, Polygon, Avalanche and Optimism, and the money came back because the attacker returned it. 4
  • Screen the reward share of any four-figure pool before entering. On thirteen of the seventeen pools above, emissions supply more than 90% of the headline rate, and the token you are paid in is the one whose price has to hold until you sell. 10
