5:00 a.m. live briefing: Metro Vancouver CAO departure reported as B.C. wildfire and China-UK steel dispute develop
The 5:00 a.m. PDT briefing adds a reported Metro Vancouver board decision, keeps the Interior evacuation order outside the region, and records China's response to Britain's British Steel takeover.
Cutoff
5:00 a.m. PDT, Saturday, July 18, 2026. All times below are Pacific time.
Metro Vancouver
Global News reports that the Metro Vancouver board has decided to part ways with Chief Administrative Officer Jerry Dobrovolny. The report says the decision followed a closed board meeting; it does not provide further meeting details or use the word "terminate." 1
At 4:00 a.m., Vancouver International Airport was mostly cloudy and 15°C, with southeast winds at 11 km/h and 32 km visibility. This is an airport observation, not a citywide incident report. 2
Wider B.C. - outside Metro Vancouver
CTV News reported at 8:07 p.m. Friday that an evacuation order had been issued as an out-of-control wildfire grew in B.C.'s Interior, affecting 107 properties. The report is outside the Metro Vancouver boundary and is carried here as a continuing public-safety watch, not as a Metro Vancouver alert. 3
EmergencyInfoBC's current listings also show evacuation orders for the Boston Bar area, Bowers Lake Fire Area, and the Big Bar Lake and Meadow Lake areas. The listings are outside Metro Vancouver and show update dates of July 16 or July 17, but no more precise update time. 4
World
At 3:47 a.m. PDT, Reuters reported that China's Foreign Ministry would closely monitor the United Kingdom's nationalisation of British Steel, previously owned by Chinese private steelmaker Jingye, and would take measures to protect what it called legitimate rights and interests if warranted. Britain took the loss-making company into public ownership on national-security grounds on Thursday. China urged London to seek a mutually acceptable solution, including compensation. 5
Watchlist
- Metro Vancouver: Watch for an official board statement or details on the CAO transition; the Global News report does not yet provide them.
- Wider B.C.: Recheck EmergencyInfoBC and the relevant regional districts for timestamped evacuation-order or route changes. These wildfire orders are outside Metro Vancouver.
- U.S.-Iran conflict: Monitor Gulf airspace, water infrastructure and shipping for independently confirmed developments; no additional independently verified change from that conflict is added to this cutoff.
