Great blue herons nested at Blue Heron Lake this season; here’s where to start this weekend and how to watch without crowding the colony.
Great blue herons are nesting in the middle of Golden Gate Park. In 2026, San Francisco Nature Education reported five active nests and fourteen chicks at Blue Heron Lake, the former Stow Lake. The best easy starting point is Blue Heron Lake Boathouse, then the island opposite the boathouse and the waterfall side.
For a weekend visit: bring binoculars, stay on the paths, and give the birds space around the nesting areas.
