The element that makes ruby red and chrome shine — brilliant mirror luster, hard bcc crystal, corrosion-resistant.
Chromium gives rubies their red color (Cr³⁺ in corundum) and emeralds their green. As a chrome plating, it creates a brilliant mirror finish. Stainless steel contains ~10% chromium, which forms a passive oxide layer that prevents corrosion.
