22,809 postings at a $24 hour, and the three services still clearing $30

Upwork's weekly posting count fell 6.1% to 22,809 while the average fixed budget rose to $840, and this issue vets the three services whose medians still clear $30 — corporate and contract law, financial planning and personal and professional coaching — each with an honest 90-day path, three-tier pricing, client-screening red flags and adaptable gig copy.

The skill market this week

Upwork's posting count fell this week. SnipeWork scanned 22,809 posts for 12–18 October 2026, down 6.1% on the week before 1.
The average advertised hour held at $24 for a fourth week. The average fixed budget rose 17.5% to $840, while the median fixed budget stayed at $100 2 — one big project moves an average and leaves a median alone.
The level has held since the scanner's coverage changed, at 24,302 posts in the week of 5–11 October 3, against 13,803 in the week of 6 July 2.
Price runs opposite to volume. Design & Creative carried 6,264 posts, 28% of the week, at an average of $24 an hour. Legal carried 372, 1.6% of it, at an average of $62 1.
Inside single skills, priced as 30-day medians by a second publisher, it holds the same way: Digital Marketing 13,013 posts at a $17 median, graphic and presentation design 7,619 at $25, contract law 1,248 at $50 456.
Supply explains part of it. UpAlerts timed proposals on 223,280 posts between 26 July and 25 September 2026: within 30 minutes, at least 23% had five proposals, 12% had ten and 4.7% had twenty 7.
Freelancers described the same thing. One r/Upwork poster counted twenty proposals two minutes after a job went live 8. A thread on rate-cutting pointed at US-only listings offering $4 to $10 an hour 9.
A freelancer applying only to $100-an-hour jobs from clients rated 4.5 and above wrote that most of this quarter's replies were scam approaches 10.
Two numbers the filter wants are published nowhere: no platform releases skill-level demand growth over 30 days, and Fiverr's hire pages for these categories publish no aggregate hourly median to set against Upwork's 1112.
Each pick carries measured 30-day posting volume and its own rate movement. Every rate below is an Upwork-side median from live job posts.
The three are ranked by median advertised hourly rate, which is what the filter turns on.

3. Personal & Professional Coaching (Accounting & Consulting)$31$8$70159 1464%−22.5%$100

1. Corporate & Contract Law

Demand. 1,248 posts in the 30 days to 19 October, 77% from clients whose payment method Upwork had verified 6. Legal is the smallest of the twelve categories by volume and the highest by price.
Rate reality. Median $50 an hour, floor $11, top decile $110, up 25% against the prior 30 days 6. Read a 30-day jump that size as a change in who posted, rather than a raise across the profession. The typical fixed project is $150.
The licence boundary decides who can work here. A lawyer sells advice; anyone else sells reviewed documents and clause summaries in a named jurisdiction, with the advice left to counsel.
Learning path. Ninety days buy a review process and a paper trail. The knowledge comes from the job you already hold.
  • 3 days. Build a twelve-clause NDA checklist, then review ten public NDAs against it and time yourself. Learn the buyer's words: MSA, SOW, DPA, indemnity, limitation of liability, governing law.
  • 4 weeks. Pick one contract type and one jurisdiction. Build a clause library with fallback positions, redline two public template agreements, and learn one contract-management tool well enough to run a review queue.
  • 12 weeks. Deliver two paid reviews. Turn the best one into a 48-hour fixed-price offer. Have a lawyer read your annotated output before it reaches a client.
Pricing template. Starter gig at $150–$250: one NDA or short agreement, an annotated redline plus a one-page summary, in 48 hours. Mid-tier package at $600–$900: an MSA with its SOW, a clause-by-clause memo and one call. Monthly retainer at $800–$1,500: up to eight agreements a month and a clause library kept current.
Top 3 client-screening red flags. A document to sign before anyone describes the work: an r/freelance poster was asked to sign an eight-page "NDA" assigning full IP and ten-year confidentiality before hearing what the project was 15. A client who wants to know whether they will win, which asks for advice. And an agreement already signed and now in dispute, needed yesterday: that is litigation support with a deadline nobody agreed to.
I will review your contract against a checklist and hand back a redline with plain-English notes
You have an agreement in front of you and a decision to make by Friday. I read it, mark what needs changing, and explain each change in a sentence you can send to the other side.
What you get. An annotated copy with comments on every clause that matters, a one-page summary of the five points I would push back on, and a short note listing what to ask your lawyer if you have one.
What I need to start. The document, the counterparty, the jurisdiction that governs it, and one line on what you want out of the deal. Tell me which side you sit on.
What I do. Contract review and clause analysis: NDAs, master service agreements, statements of work, data processing terms, supplier agreements. I work from your playbook or build one with you.
What I do not do. I am not your lawyer and I do not give legal advice or predict outcomes. Anything needing a legal opinion goes to counsel, and my notes say so when it does.
Turnaround. 48 hours for a single agreement, five working days for a set. One round of follow-up questions is included.
Message me with the document type and the deadline before ordering, so I can tell you whether I can meet it.
Adjacent specialization. Trademark and IP work is the rung above, at a $89 median across 4,683 legal postings whose own median was $45 16. That study covered the 90 days to late June 2026, so read the figure as the size of the step.

2. Financial Planning

Demand. 428 posts in 30 days, 77% payment-verified 13. It sits a rung above last week's management consulting pick, which prices at $35 across 520 posts 17.
Rate reality. Median $43 an hour, floor $13, top decile $99, and a 4.4% slip against the prior 30 days 13. Nearly a third of hourly posts sit between $40 and $60, and one in ten clears $100; featured and enterprise clients pay 63% above ordinary postings. The typical fixed project is $200.
Learning path. This one rewards spreadsheet fluency and business context you may already have.
  • 3 days. Build a three-statement monthly model for one real small business from its published numbers. Learn the phrases buyers use: 13-week cash flow, runway, forecast against actual, scenario.
  • 4 weeks. Build two reusable artifacts, a 13-week cash-flow forecast and a one-page budget-versus-actual review, and write the scoping sheet that turns either into a fixed price.
  • 12 weeks. Deliver two paid engagements, one built from a bank export. Move the better client onto a monthly review.
Pricing template. Starter gig at $300: a 13-week cash-flow forecast from the client's bank export and profit-and-loss, assumptions written down. Mid-tier package at $900–$1,500: an annual budget, a monthly variance pack, and one call to walk through both. Monthly retainer at $400–$800: the variance review and a rolling forecast, refreshed each month.
Top 3 client-screening red flags. A request to recommend a specific investment, which is regulated advice in most jurisdictions. A business with no books asking for a forecast, where any model would be fiction with a chart on top. And a full plan requested as a free sample, which prices the work at zero before the first invoice.
I will build your 13-week cash-flow forecast and tell you which month gets tight
You know roughly what comes in and roughly what goes out. You need to know which week the account runs low, and what to move before it does.
What I build. A 13-week rolling cash-flow forecast from your bank statements and profit-and-loss, with every assumption written beside the number it drives. You get the spreadsheet, a one-page summary of the tight weeks, and three levers you can pull before they arrive.
What I need. Three months of bank exports, your last profit-and-loss, a list of payments you know are coming, and 30 minutes on a call.
Who this suits. Businesses between roughly $100k and $5m in revenue, and founders who have never built one of these.
Turnaround. Five working days from the data arriving. One round of revisions included.
Recurring option. Most clients move to a monthly review after the first forecast: updated numbers, a short note on what changed, and a call when something needs deciding.
What I do not do. I do not sell investments, recommend securities or give tax advice. Where a question needs an accountant or a licensed adviser, the notes say so.
Message me with your revenue range and what prompted this before ordering.
Adjacent specialization. Above this shelf the tracker stops naming the work. Its catch-all bucket, Other – Accounting & Consulting, prices at $50 across 444 posts, where fractional and advisory engagements sit 18. The step is about $7 an hour, and the work changes from a document to a seat at the table.

3. Personal & Professional Coaching

Demand. 159 posts in 30 days with 64% payment-verified, the thinnest and least verified sample of the three 14. Treat the volume and the rate as indicative.
Rate reality. Median $31 an hour, floor $8, top decile $70, and the median fell 22.5% against the prior 30 days 14. The distribution splits in two: 43% of hourly posts sit under $25, and 44% sit at $40 or above. The median lands in the gap between a cheap session and a corporate engagement. The typical fixed project is $100.
Learning path. Ninety days buy a niche and a process. A practice takes longer, and that split says why.
  • 3 days. Name the one job you have held long enough to coach others through. Write a six-question intake and a four-session outline built on it.
  • 4 weeks. Run five sessions with people in that job and write one line per client on what changed. Ask two of them for a sentence you can quote.
  • 12 weeks. Charge for the six-week block at or above $31 an hour, and pitch one company rather than one individual.
Pricing template. Starter gig at $150: a 60-minute session plus a written plan the client leaves with. Mid-tier package at $600: four sessions over six weeks, with a short written summary after each. Monthly retainer at $400–$800: two sessions a month plus async check-ins.
Top 3 client-screening red flags. A client describing acute distress or a clinical problem, which needs a therapist and a referral. An outcome guarantee, where the fee depends on a promotion or a job offer. And a company buying coaching for someone it has already decided to manage out, which makes you the instrument of a decision already taken.
I will coach you through the first 90 days in a new senior role
The job is bigger than the last one, the expectations are vague, and you have a small window to work out what your manager actually wants.
How it works. Six weeks, four sessions, one hour each. We write down what success looks like at day 90 in your manager's words, then work backwards to the three things you should be doing now and the two you should stop.
What you leave with. A one-page plan you can send your manager, the five relationships that decide your first year, and a script for the conversation you are avoiding.
What I need to start. A short note on the role, the industry and what happened in your first month. No preparation beyond that.
Who this suits. People who have just moved into a management or lead role, or are about to.
The terms. Sessions are 60 minutes by video, inside six weeks, with written notes after each. Rescheduling needs 24 hours.
What this is not. Coaching is not therapy and not a guarantee of a promotion. If what you describe needs clinical help, I will say so and point you elsewhere.
Message me with your start date and one sentence on what is worrying you.
Adjacent specialization. Management Consulting & Analysis is the neighbouring shelf, at a $35 median across 520 posts, 78% payment-verified 17. The hourly step is four dollars. The buyer changes from a person to a company, and the typical fixed project doubles from $100 to $200.

How to choose

Three questions separate these picks faster than the rate table does.
What does your job license you to do? Contract law pays $50 an hour, and a credential decides whether you can take the work.
How soon do you need an invoice? Financial planning carries the most repeated small purchases, at a $200 typical project and 428 posts a month.
Who signs? Coaching's $31 median sits between a $25 consumer market and a $40 corporate one, and the corporate half is where the rate holds.
All three sell a service to a business; the high-volume shelves where medians sit at $17 to $25 pay for the same hours.
