New Releases Radar: September 18–25, 2026

A selective guide to 14 albums released September 18–25, 2026 across five genres, with the editorial picks, reviews and release-day signals behind each choice and a first track for every one.

Spotify / Apple Music New Album Releases
Spotify / Apple Music New Album Releases@NeoDrop Official
An unusually crowded Friday closes the September 18–25 window. Gilla Band, Julia Jacklin, Protomartyr, Blondshell, Tinashe, Leon Bridges, Tee Grizzley, M83, Kenny Chesney and Joy Oladokun all released albums on September 25. HotNewHipHop's Friday preview found the rap field thinner than usual, with most artists putting out singles instead, because the Grammy eligibility period has closed and labels are holding records back until January. 1
Release-day decisions rest on what can be checked today: editorial picks, published reviews, release-day threads, and the playlists each album has landed on. First-week streaming totals and chart debuts arrive on their own weekly cycle, after release morning, so this piece leaves positions out rather than estimating them.

Indie / alternative

Gilla Band — Pugnello

  • Artist: Gilla Band
  • Album: Pugnello
  • Label: Rough Trade Records
  • Genre: Noise rock, post-punk
  • Release date: September 25, 2026 17
  • Signal: Stereogum named it Album of the Week on September 22, three days before release, and Pitchfork published a release-day review that calls it the band's "most methodical and charged album to date." Its release thread on r/indieheads held 168 upvotes and 33 comments by Friday afternoon. 2318
  • Listening route: Apple Music album or Bandcamp
  • Why spend time: The Dublin four-piece — Dara Kiely, Alan Duggan Borges, Daniel Fox and Adam Faulkner — has spent fifteen years pushing a guitar-bass-drums setup into noise-punk and dance music, and this fourth album runs 10 songs in 42 minutes. Pitchfork's Madison Bloom describes a record of "nasty textures, the colliding rhythms, the gnarled vocals," with Fox's fuzzed-out basslines holding the dance impulse against Duggan Borges' distortion; the opener "The Angelus" pits "leviathan guitar" against Faulkner's 170 bpm percussion. Kiely's writing is more exposed here: on "Alogia" he names his schizophrenia diagnosis, and "Crisp Pop" assigns each Britpop band a crisp flavour. Apple Music adds "collapsing-building electronics." 317
  • First listen: "Alogia." The album's third track, released with a video, is where Kiely says the quiet part plainly: "I'm a schizophrenic." 17
Pick Pugnello if you want the loudest record of the week and you would rather be unsettled than soothed.

Julia Jacklin — The Gem

  • Artist: Julia Jacklin
  • Album: The Gem
  • Label: 4AD
  • Genre: Singer-songwriter, indie folk, country-rock
  • Release date: September 25, 2026 19
  • Signal: Radio Milwaukee's Erin Wolf led the station's Friday new-music column with it, describing it as "a soaring document of the songwriter's journey back to herself." Its r/indieheads release thread drew 211 upvotes and 22 comments before Friday afternoon. 420
  • Listening route: Apple Music album or Bandcamp
  • Why spend time: Jacklin's fourth album is 10 songs in 35 minutes, and it exists because she threw the first version away. The record was cut in ten days with Robert Muiños, whose Melbourne studio sits above the pub the album is named for; she did not like the result, and the two went back in for eleven months. The songs came out of an Icelandic artist residency, a Nashville layover and a walk through Clifton Hill, and Jacklin talks through each one in the album's Apple Music notes: the country-rock demo she rebuilt for "Brand New," the duet she ended up singing both parts of on "The Hardest Thing," the longest song she has ever recorded on "Walk on Me." Radio Milwaukee places it between Angel Olsen's My Woman and Mazzy Star's So Tonight That I Might See, with a jitter borrowed from the Velvet Underground. 419
  • First listen: "Brand New." The opening track began as a full-band country-rock song and was rebuilt after Jacklin decided she did not like it — the album's working method in one track. 19
Pick The Gem if you want the week's most patient record and a lyricist working at full attention.

Protomartyr — Hotel Usona

  • Artist: Protomartyr
  • Album: Hotel Usona
  • Label: Domino Recording Co.
  • Genre: Post-punk
  • Release date: September 25, 2026 21
  • Signal: Its release thread on r/indieheads was the busiest of the day, at 367 upvotes and 85 comments by Friday afternoon. Paste's review opens by saying the band dives "headlong into the American nightmare"; Northern Transmissions also reviewed it on release. 52223
  • Listening route: Apple Music album or Bandcamp
  • Why spend time: The Detroit band's follow-up to 2023's Formal Growth in the Desert is 9 tracks, recorded with Dave Fridmann — the producer behind Mercury Rev, MGMT and the Flaming Lips — at his Tarbox Road Studios in western New York. The single "Sounds We Cannot Hear" arrived in July with a video starring Nate Varrone, and Iggy Pop supplied the press-release blurb, calling the record "highly themed and symphonic in its reach" and singling out the moment when Joe Casey "simply announces, all alone, 'We got a bad review.'" The tracklist runs from "The Old Hotel" to "Checking Out." 2124
  • First listen: "Sounds We Cannot Hear." The July single and second track, and the fastest way to hear what Fridmann's room did to the band's guitars. 24
Pick Hotel Usona if the week's other guitar records sound too polite.

Blondshell — Violins

  • Artist: Blondshell
  • Album: Violins
  • Label: Partisan Records
  • Genre: Alt-rock, indie rock
  • Release date: September 25, 2026 25
  • Signal: Radio Milwaukee picked it alongside Julia Jacklin and Leon Bridges in its Friday column, and Under the Radar has made Blondshell its digital cover story for the album. Its r/indieheads release thread held 88 upvotes and 27 comments by Friday afternoon. 4626
  • Listening route: Apple Music album or Bandcamp
  • Why spend time: Sabrina Teitelbaum's third album is 11 songs in 39 minutes, produced by her longtime collaborator Yves Rothman. She has moved away from romantic trouble toward harder material: "Heart Has to Work So Hard" works through a toxic friendship and ends at forgiveness, and the title track sets images of brutality against small gestures of care. Apple Music hears Gang of Four, Teenage Fanclub and Television in the guitars, and the album arrived with placements on New Music Daily, Today's Indie Rock and Breaking Alternative. 25
  • First listen: "Violins." The title track, released with a video, is the clearest statement of the record's balance of violence and tenderness. 25
Pick Violins if you want guitars with an argument under them.

Hip-hop / R&B

Tinashe — Popstar

  • Artist: Tinashe
  • Album: Popstar
  • Label: Nice Life Recording Company / Atlantic Records
  • Genre: Pop, R&B
  • Release date: September 25, 2026 27
  • Signal: The busiest release thread of the day on r/hiphopheads, at 423 upvotes and 49 comments by Friday afternoon; Apple Music put the album on A-List Pop, Pop Deluxe, Heartbreak Pop and Breaking Pop, and filmed a Zane Lowe interview around it. 727
  • Listening route: Apple Music album
  • Why spend time: Tinashe's eighth album runs 16 songs in 39 minutes and refuses a single register: Apple Music points to the heavy bass of "Too Easy," the glitch of "Melatonin" and the full ballad "I'd Rather Be Alone" inside the same record. She tells Zane Lowe that she has stopped worrying about her interests sounding cohesive. "Melatonin," the single this column picked back in August, now sits among sixteen tracks here, next to the boastful "Flashbacks" and the high-velocity "Cloud 9." One caution on the numbers: HotNewHipHop's Friday preview had listed only Tinashe and Leon Bridges among major rap-adjacent albums, so this is a pop record arriving in a thin hip-hop week. 127
  • First listen: "Too Easy." Released as a single with a video, and the album's fastest argument for the dance floor. 27
Pick Popstar if you want the week's biggest record and you are happy to take it at 39 minutes rather than 85.

Leon Bridges — Happiness Anytime

  • Artist: Leon Bridges
  • Album: Happiness Anytime
  • Label: Columbia Records
  • Genre: R&B, soul, Afrobeats
  • Release date: September 25, 2026 8
  • Signal: Radio Milwaukee named it among the week's four leads, noting the record leads "with light"; Apple Music has it on New Music Daily, Feeling Happy and Pop Latte. It also appears in HotNewHipHop's Friday listing, which counted it among the day's few major releases. 148
  • Listening route: Apple Music album
  • Why spend time: Bridges' fifth album is 12 songs in 37 minutes, made with Josh Lloyd-Watson and Lydia Kitto of Jungle, and he tells Apple Music he wanted to move again after the slow, inward Leon: "It's time to get the people moving again." The Afrobeats and Brazilian rhythms show up from the first track, and "All Day, All Night" brings Kitto in for a duet. 8
  • First listen: "Light the Way." The opener sets the album's terms — brass, guitar, and a groove built to be moved to. 8
Pick Happiness Anytime if the week needs something warm rather than something heavy.

Tee Grizzley — They Forgot

  • Artist: Tee Grizzley
  • Album: They Forgot
  • Label: 300 Entertainment
  • Genre: Hip-hop, Detroit rap
  • Release date: September 25, 2026 9
  • Signal: Apple Music placed it on Rap Life, Hip-Hop Workout, #GYMFLOW and #OnRepeat at release, and HotNewHipHop listed it among the day's few full-length rap albums. Its r/hiphopheads release thread drew 21 upvotes and 8 comments, a fraction of Tinashe's — this is a fanbase record, not a chart-buzz record. 928
  • Listening route: Apple Music album
  • Why spend time: Grizzley's 16 songs run 46 minutes, and the guests are kept deliberately sparse: Skilla Baby on the Ashanti-sampling "Rain," Hurricane Wisdom on "Hard Times." Apple Music's notes pick out the autobiographical stretch — "Locked Up In Mexico," "Detroit Public Schools," "No Effort 2" — and the Detroit record arrives a year after two albums, Forever My Moment and Street Psalms. 9
  • First listen: "Hard Times." Apple Music's pick from the record, with Hurricane Wisdom trading his own story against Grizzley's. 9
Pick They Forgot if you follow Detroit rap and want the album the playlist placements understate.

Apollo Brown & Skyzoo — Luxury Tax

  • Artist: Apollo Brown & Skyzoo
  • Album: Luxury Tax
  • Label: Escapism Recordings / FGR Inc
  • Genre: Hip-hop, boom-bap
  • Release date: September 25, 2026 29
  • Signal: Soul In Stereo reviewed it on release day and called it his potential favorite album of the 2020s, writing that the pair "have mastered the most important dynamics in any rapper/producer partnership – chemistry and trust." Its r/hiphopheads release thread drew 69 upvotes and 13 comments. 1030
  • Listening route: Spotify album
  • Why spend time: The Detroit producer and the Brooklyn rapper are on their second full-length together, after 2016's The Easy Truth, and both sides of that chemistry are audible: Apollo Brown's samples run from mid-2000s soul on "No Discount" to horns on "Scrape the Bowl," while Skyzoo's verses wrap street metaphor around everyday argument — "I used brick talk to give y'all critical race theory," on "Rose Tinted." The centerpiece is "The Blind Spot," which puts Skyzoo alongside Blu and Elzhi in turn. Track count and runtime have not been published. 10
  • First listen: "Abundance." The first proper song, where Skyzoo opens with "treat this like we're riding for the first time" and Apollo Brown sets the boom-bap terms. 10
Pick Luxury Tax if you want bars over samples rather than the week's pop-tempo records.

Electronic

M83 — I Wrote You a Letter

  • Artist: M83
  • Album: I Wrote You a Letter
  • Label: M83 Recording Inc
  • Genre: Electronic, synthgaze
  • Release date: September 25, 2026 31
  • Signal: The day's most-upvoted release thread on r/indieheads, at 221 upvotes and 31 comments, and Apple Music placed it on New Music Daily, Breaking Alternative, New in Alternative and New in Indie. 1131
  • Listening route: Apple Music album
  • Why spend time: Anthony Gonzalez's tenth M83 album is 9 songs in 40 minutes and largely instrumental, which puts it closer to his early-2000s work than to the stadium-sized anthems of Hurry Up, We're Dreaming. Apple Music's notes liken the opening plunge to the start of my bloody valentine's Loveless, note the rising oscillations of "Losing Ground" and the free-jazz detour of "Siren / Behold…Beasts," and flag the moment "Feeding Time" turns from finger-picked psych-folk into a synth-shocked stomp. 31
  • First listen: "Blister Sunrise." The opener, and the album's statement of intent: no build-up, straight into the synth bath. 31
Pick I Wrote You a Letter if you wanted M83's albums to sound like his film scores again.

claire rousay & Martyna Basta — hotel room

  • Artist: claire rousay & Martyna Basta
  • Album: hotel room
  • Label: Unsound
  • Genre: Ambient, electro-acoustic
  • Release date: September 25, 2026 12
  • Signal: The record came out of a 2023 Unsound residency in Kraków, and the label's own notes describe how the two traded drafts across continents before rousay mixed the result; The Line of Best Fit and Stereogum both announced the collaboration ahead of release. 12
  • Listening route: Bandcamp album
  • Why spend time: Six tracks, split between three long-form pieces and three short songs, made by two artists with touring schedules that keep them moving: rousay in Los Angeles, Basta in Kraków. The label's account of the process is unusually specific about the sound — field recordings, spectral voices, filtered improvisation, and an album that "sounds bewitchingly unmoored," with the short "Denim" built from skeletal piano and pulsating feedback while "Lost and Found" floats wordless Autotuned ad-libs over guitar. Runtime has not been published. 12
  • First listen: "Zoom." The opening track, where scratchy close-miked textures sit over elegiac harmony before guitar drones take the foreground. 12
Pick hotel room if you want one record this week that asks for headphones and patience.

Classical

Hildur Guðnadóttir — This Will Be Us

  • Artist: Hildur Guðnadóttir (cello), Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, Robert Ames
  • Album: This Will Be Us
  • Label: Deutsche Grammophon (4869073)
  • Genre: Contemporary orchestral
  • Release date: September 25, 2026 13
  • Signal: Presto Music led its weekly round-up with the album, and Deutsche Grammophon has it as a new release with the cover artwork by Ólafur Elíasson and liner notes by the composer and the filmmaker Sarah Polley. 1332
  • Listening route: Presto stream
  • Why spend time: The album takes pieces Guðnadóttir first recorded alone — one person trying to be a string orchestra — and hands them to the DSO Berlin under Robert Ames, adding the two new works The Song That Never Was and Blind Sarabande. The Presto listing runs 43 minutes, recorded at Teldex Studio in Berlin between February and April 2026. Guðnadóttir frames it as a gift to her younger self: "When I was recording, trying to be a one-person string orchestra, I always dreamed of having more people playing with me." 32
  • First listen: "The Song That Never Was." One of the two new compositions, five minutes, sitting between the orchestral rewrites of older material. 32
Pick This Will Be Us if you know Guðnadóttir from Chernobyl or Joker and want to hear the chamber music underneath.

Smetana: Libuše — Czech Philharmonic, Prague Philharmonic Choir, Jakub Hrůša

  • Album: Smetana: Libuše
  • Artists: Kateřina Kněžíková (Libuše), Adam Plachetka (Přemysl), Czech Philharmonic, Prague Philharmonic Choir, Jakub Hrůša
  • Label: Supraphon (SU43782)
  • Genre: Opera
  • Release date: September 25, 2026 14
  • Signal: Presto's round-up named it among the day's new releases, and the recording comes from the Year of Czech Music 2024. Reviewing one of the live performances, BachTrack wrote that "this was an orchestra revelling in music that's in their blood, let off the leash to produce an unrestrained, monumental sound." 1314
  • Listening route: Presto stream
  • Why spend time: Smetana wrote Libuše for the opening of Prague's National Theatre in 1881, and it is staged less often than his other operas; this set runs 2 hours 42 minutes across three CDs, recorded in May and June 2024 at Prague Spring concerts and in preparation for the Smetana Litomyšl Festival. Kateřina Kněžíková sings the title role opposite Adam Plachetka as Přemysl. The plot turns on a legendary queen who foresees the nation's future on her wedding day, and Presto notes the recording captures the ceremonial scale along with the quieter passages. 14
  • First listen: Overture. Eight and a half minutes that state the opera's scale before any voice enters. 14
Pick Libuše if you want the week's largest classical undertaking and you have an evening to give it.

Country / roots

Kenny Chesney — Silver Sands Marina

  • Artist: Kenny Chesney
  • Album: Silver Sands Marina
  • Label: HEY NOW Records, distributed by Warner Records
  • Genre: Country
  • Release date: September 25, 2026 15
  • Signal: Apple Music has it on Today's Country, The Sand Bar, Back Porch Country and Country in Spatial Audio at release, with videos for "Carry On," "Goldfish" and the title track. 15
  • Listening route: Apple Music album
  • Why spend time: Chesney's 21st album is 11 songs in 35 minutes, and Apple Music's notes hear a singer who sounds "newly energized" rather than a stadium act on autopilot. The story songs carry the record: "Carry On" is built around a bar's longtime regular, "Talkin' Dirt" takes on small-town gossip, and "Sad Casino" sets a post-breakup scene under slot-machine lights. Three duets widen it — Megan Moroney, Lily Meola and Colbie Caillat. 15
  • First listen: "Carry On." The opener, and the song Apple Music expects to become a fixture of Chesney's live shows. 15
Pick Silver Sands Marina if you want the week's most straightforward country record and you have 35 minutes.

Joy Oladokun — Hope Is a Heavy Thing

  • Artist: Joy Oladokun
  • Album: Hope Is a Heavy Thing
  • Label: Feed the Family Records, licensed to Concord Records
  • Genre: Folk, Americana
  • Release date: September 25, 2026 16
  • Signal: Radio Milwaukee included it in its Friday picks, and Apple Music placed it on New in Americana, Southern Soul, Morning Coffee and New Music Daily. Its r/indieheads release thread drew 4 upvotes with no comments. 41633
  • Listening route: Apple Music album
  • Why spend time: Oladokun's fifth album is 12 songs in 39 minutes, and it keeps moving across folk, Afrobeats and soul rather than settling into one. Apple Music's summary is short — "the singer-songwriter fuses folk, Afrobeats, and more on album five" — and the record arrived with videos for "Sage," which brings in Nigeria's Adekunle Gold, plus "Kind" and "Zombie." 16
  • First listen: "Raised by the Radio (A Reintroduction)." The opening track frames the album as a return, and it is the shortest route into Oladokun's range. 16
Pick Hope Is a Heavy Thing if you want the folk-adjacent record with the least predictable tracklist.

First clicks

One slot this weekend goes to Gilla Band's Pugnello, the only album here with both Stereogum's Album of the Week and a same-day Pitchfork review behind it. If noise is not the mood, Julia Jacklin's The Gem is the other record with an editorial lead and a full release-day thread behind it, and Leon Bridges' Happiness Anytime is the fastest of the fourteen to get through.
