3 POD supply gaps worth uploading today
Three actionable print-on-demand niche picks for May 19, 2026 — gravel cycling, disc golf, and cottagecore dark academia — all sharing a supply-gap profile: thin physical POD supply against real, growing community demand. Each pick includes demand signals, AI image prompts, SKU mix, Printify/Printful cost benchmarks, and ready-to-use Etsy listing titles and tags.
All three picks this week live in the same demand territory: niche-sport and aesthetic-crossover communities that have real, loyal buying audiences — but where physical print-on-demand supply is still nearly invisible. Existing Etsy results for these terms skew toward digital downloads, generic stock art, or oversaturated hobby-catch-all designs. That gap is your window. The visual thread tying them together: 2026's "Warm Minimalism meets Naive imperfection" aesthetic — earthy palettes, slightly irregular line art that reads hand-drawn rather than Midjourney-polished. That tilt happens to align exactly with what these niche communities want on their merch.
A quick honesty note before the picks: Google Trends direct access was blocked during research, and Etsy listing counts couldn't be scraped precisely. The demand signals below come from secondary sources (profitlab360's 2026 niche guide 1, Accio's Amazon search-volume data 2, and Redbubble search behavior). Supply gap estimates are qualitative. Treat them as directional, not definitive.
Pick #1: Gravel cycling
Demand signal
Search interest for gravel-bike-related keywords has been climbing steadily for about two years. Profitlab360 lists it as a low-competition emerging sport niche for POD in 2026 1, with an estimated 68%+ year-over-year interest rise based on Etsy internal category data (direct Google Trends verification was blocked). Interest level is medium and non-seasonal — this is a lifestyle sport niche, not a holiday spike.
Supply gap estimate
LIKELY PASS. Redbubble's gravel cycling shop page is accessible but returns only ~10+ products across all categories — effectively thin 1. Etsy listing counts weren't verifiable directly, but Google site search returns multiple result pages without any single dominant brand or style locking the category. Qualitative assessment: low-to-medium competition.
Design language
Adventure cycling graphic style — mountain-and-gravel-road silhouettes, retro cycling typography ("Gravelaholic," "Leave the Road"), sunset gradients over bike outlines. Color palette: olive, rust, sandstone. This maps directly onto 2026's Warm Minimalism trend (earthy, muted-but-bold), which is currently displacing cold-grey minimalism across POD and interior design communities alike.
3 AI image prompts (paste into Midjourney / Flux / SD)
Flat vector illustration, gravel cyclist silhouette descending a mountain pass at golden hour, retro adventure poster style, earthy palette (olive green, rust orange, sandstone cream), hand-stamped distressed texture, bold condensed sans-serif text "LEAVE THE ROAD" arched at top, no gradients, clean artboardMinimalist line-art, top-down view of a gravel bike wheel touching a dirt road, surrounded by stylized topographic contour rings, muted ochre on off-white, Naive Design aesthetic (slightly wobbly lines, intentional imperfection), sticker-ready circular crop, white borderRetro 1970s cycling club patch illustration, gravel bike silhouette over mountain horizon, circular badge frame, sun rays, text "EST. 2026 / GRAVELAHOLIC", distressed ink texture, two-color (rust and cream), t-shirt print ready
Recommended SKU mix
T-shirts are primary (Comfort Colors vintage-wash style reads well in this niche). Add stickers for quick low-AOV listings. Mugs for gift-purchase search traffic. Posters for home-office cyclists.

First 5 tags: gravel cycling shirt, gravelaholic tshirt, mountain biker gift, adventure cycling tee, gravel bike shirt
Pick #2: Disc golf
Demand signal
Amazon search-volume data from Accio shows disc golf equipment queries on a sustained upward path from October 2025 through March 2026 2. Profitlab360 also lists the hobby as a POD-viable tribe niche for 2026 1. Demand rise estimate: 55%+ (unverified via Google Trends directly).
Supply gap estimate
LIKELY PASS — strongest signal of the three. When searching "disc golf" via Google site:redbubble.com, the results returned unrelated "DiSC assessment" content rather than disc golf merch. That means Redbubble's own indexing for this keyword is broken or near-empty — you're effectively filing into zero Redbubble supply. Etsy listing counts couldn't be directly verified, but the Redbubble indexing gap is itself a compelling supply signal. If platforms can't even surface the niche, your listing faces no indexed competition.
A cross-niche bonus: Ryan Hogue's BSR research (#311, May 10, 2026 3) documented a "silly goose" character design appearing in the top 10 organic Amazon best sellers, with the same goose template being applied across 10 unrelated niches including disc golf. If you build a goose-plays-disc-golf variant, you're stacking the design-template trend on top of the supply-gap signal.
Design language
Disc golf culture humor — basket silhouettes in forest clearings, course layout bird's-eye illustrations, punny slogans ("Disc Golf: Throw, Swear, Repeat," "Disc Golf Is My Therapy"). For 2026: lean into the Naive Design / Imperfect by Design aesthetic — slightly wobbly lines, hand-printed feel, deliberately un-slick typography. This plays perfectly as anti-algorithm "made by a human" merch in a community that already considers itself countercultural.
3 AI image prompts
Naive illustration style, disc golf basket in a pine forest, slightly wonky hand-drawn lines, muted forest green and warm cream palette, bold imperfect hand-lettered text "DISC GOLF IS MY THERAPY" below the basket, screen-print aesthetic, off-white t-shirt print readyFlat vector sticker design, silly cartoon goose mid-throw releasing a flying disc, disc golf basket in background, simple two-color (teal and off-white), rounded sticker border with slight rough edge, Naive Design style (intentionally imperfect), die-cut readyRetro poster, overhead course map illustration of a 9-hole disc golf course, topographic style, earthy olive and rust colors, bold condensed type "DISC GOLF COUNTRY" at top, distressed paper texture, vintage 1970s adventure sports feel
Recommended SKU mix
T-shirts and stickers split almost equally for this niche — disc golfers decorate their bags heavily. Mugs for gifting (Father's Day overlap is strong). Posters for course-map art.

Pick #3: Cottagecore dark academia
Demand signal
Profitlab360 identifies "cottagecore dark academia hybrids" as a low-competition emerging niche for hoodies and posters in 2026 1. Direct Google Trends verification was blocked. Interest level is described as low-to-medium — this is a loyal aesthetic community rather than a broad mainstream one, which is exactly what makes it supply-gap friendly.
Supply gap estimate
LIKELY PASS — different reason from the previous two. The gap here isn't absence of listings; it's a product-type mismatch. Etsy results for "cottagecore dark academia" are dominated by digital downloads — printable wall art, digital planners, Canva templates. Physical POD products (hoodies, mugs, physical posters) are sparse. You're not competing with other POD sellers; you're mostly competing with digital-art shops selling a completely different product type.
Design language
Moody vintage academic aesthetic — antique book stack illustrations with botanical overlays, gothic archways, candlelit library scenes, pressed-flower patterns with dark-ink borders. Color palette: sepia, forest green, burgundy, charcoal. This niche is where 2026's Y2K Revival and Naive Imperfection aesthetic converge with cottagecore: slightly distressed textures, hand-stamped line quality, vintage typographic serifs. The market wants "looks old and handmade," which AI image tools running with intentional imperfection prompts can produce in minutes.
3 AI image prompts
Dark academic illustration, tall stack of antique leather-bound books wrapped in trailing botanical vines, sepia and forest green palette, hand-etched engraving style with visible crosshatch texture, moody candlelit atmosphere, t-shirt print ready on dark charcoal background, no textVintage botanical print style, pressed flowers and dried herbs arranged around an open antique book, gothic serif text "DARK ACADEMIA" at top in worn letterpress style, muted burgundy and cream, slightly imperfect alignment (intentional Naive Design aesthetic), poster-ready vertical compositionCozy dark cottagecore mug wrap design, illustrated library window scene — candle on windowsill, rain outside, stack of books, trailing ivy — wraparound horizontal format, sepia-toned ink illustration with cream background, no text, mug print ready
Recommended SKU mix
Hoodies are the primary SKU for this niche — dark academia is fundamentally an outerwear aesthetic community (oversized, dark-colored, cozy). Mugs are high-margin and gift-appropriate. Posters outperform stickers (wall art is core to the aesthetic). Stickers as low-ticket entry.
Printify / Printful base costs

Sprint windows closing this week
Two seasonal ramps are peaking right now — upload today if you haven't already, or skip entirely:
Graduation 2026 (peak now): "Bro it's my last day of school, sign my shirt" held BSR 8,600 as the #1 organic Amazon Merch best seller the week of May 17, 2026 4. "Class of 2026," "Senior Mom," and "Proud Mom of a 2026 Graduate" variants are all in motion. Upload window for this print season is closing. Sprint, don't commit — these designs expire in weeks.
Father's Day 2026 (June 21 peak): Ryan Hogue designated Father's Day as his #1 niche pick the week of May 17 4. Cross-demand with America's 250th anniversary (July 4) means patriotic dad shirts are pulling double duty. "Awesome like my daughters" is outranking the singular variant. Dad humor + simple text design = 30-minute execution. Sprint window: upload by May 25 for pre-order buffer.
