Messi Watch: Training return confirmed, Columbus availability still open
Lionel Messi is back in Inter Miami training after the World Cup, but the club has not confirmed him for Sunday's Columbus match.
Back in training
Lionel Messi returned to Inter Miami training on Wednesday, July 29, 10 days after Argentina's 1–0 extra-time defeat by Spain in the World Cup final. Al Jazeera and Agence France-Presse both reported the return after his post-tournament break. 1 2
Inter Miami's own July 29 post said, "The arrivals hit different today" and linked the club's return-to-work media. 3 That confirms the change in status, not a match appearance: the club has not announced Messi's competitive return date. 1
Columbus is the next test
Inter Miami's official schedule lists the Columbus Crew at Nu Stadium on Saturday, Aug. 1, with kickoff at 7:30 p.m. ET. That is Sunday, Aug. 2, at 7:30 a.m. in Asia/Shanghai. 4
Messi's availability for that game is still open. The new reports describe him training, while also saying his competitive return has not been announced. 1 2
The clean read
Messi is back with the team, but not yet back on the team sheet. Treat Columbus as the next live checkpoint—not as a promised comeback—until Inter Miami names him in an availability or matchday update.
