NBA Daily Digest: Curry’s Warriors future meets a new opening-night map
No games were played on Aug. 11; Stephen Curry’s expected Warriors finish, the new three-game opening night, and the five-game Christmas slate define the next NBA watch.
The NBA had no games on Aug. 11, but the league supplied the first useful map of the 2026-27 season: a three-game opening night, a five-game Christmas slate, and a broadcast calendar built around NBC, ESPN and Prime Video. The most immediate roster question is in Golden State, where the Warriors still expect Stephen Curry to finish his career with the franchise even as his recent availability remains a concern. 1
No games, no new completed move
ESPN's Aug. 11 scoreboard lists no NBA games, so there are no scores, recaps or series standings to report from the preceding 24 hours. 1
No completed trade, signing or extension with a verifiable Aug. 11 publication time is included in the fresh official material available for this edition. NBA.com's offseason transaction tracker was last updated July 30, with the Clippers' acquisition of Johni Broome and a 2027 second-round pick from Philadelphia still its newest listed move. That is a status boundary, not evidence that every team was inactive on Aug. 11. 2
ESPN's current free-agency tracker instead puts attention on the unresolved Kawhi Leonard–Clippers situation, with possible effects on Toronto and the Eastern Conference. The same update links the uncertainty to other decisions, including James Harden's Cleveland negotiations and DeMar DeRozan's market. Those are reported roster pressures, not finalized transactions. 3
Curry is expected to stay, but health is the condition
Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry is entering an expiring-contract season, yet general manager Mike Dunleavy said he remains confident Curry will finish his career with the Warriors. Dunleavy said Curry's stated desire to win and retire in Golden State has not changed, while acknowledging that the team would discuss a trade if Curry ever asked for one. 4
The public reassurance does not remove the roster risk. Warriors forward Jimmy Butler and guard Moses Moody are expected to miss a large part of next season after significant knee injuries. Center/forward Kristaps Porzingis played 32 games last season, forward Al Horford missed 37, and guard De'Anthony Melton returned from an ACL rehabilitation. Curry himself played 43 games because of a persistent right-knee issue. Dunleavy said Golden State chose talent over perfect health and hopes Curry can play more than that total. 4
The decision is therefore less about whether Curry is wanted than whether the Warriors can keep enough of the surrounding lineup available to make another competitive season worthwhile.
Opening night changes the daily schedule
The NBA will open the regular season on Tuesday, Oct. 20, with three games on NBC and Peacock. In the channel's display timezone, the slate runs into Wednesday morning. 5
| GMT+8 date and time | Matchup | Broadcast |
|---|---|---|
| Oct. 21, 03:00 | Boston Celtics at Detroit Pistons | NBC/Peacock 5 |
| Oct. 21, 07:00 | Philadelphia 76ers at New York Knicks | NBC/Peacock 5 |
| Oct. 21, 09:30 | Oklahoma City Thunder at San Antonio Spurs | NBC/Peacock 5 |
The Knicks–76ers game carries the clearest story: defending champion New York hosts Philadelphia, which now has forward LeBron James and acquired forward Jaylen Brown. The Thunder–Spurs matchup is a rematch of the 2026 Western Conference Finals. Boston–Detroit gets the first tip, giving NBC a daytime national window rather than waiting for the evening doubleheader. 5
Christmas puts the new contenders side by side
The Christmas schedule was also announced Aug. 11. It includes five games, all on ABC/ESPN, with the 2026 Finals rematch opening the day at Madison Square Garden. 6
| GMT+8 date and time | Matchup | Broadcast |
|---|---|---|
| Dec. 26, 00:00 | San Antonio Spurs at New York Knicks | ABC/ESPN 6 |
| Dec. 26, 02:30 | Miami Heat at Boston Celtics | ABC/ESPN 6 |
| Dec. 26, 05:00 | Philadelphia 76ers at Los Angeles Lakers | ABC/ESPN 6 |
| Dec. 26, 08:00 | Oklahoma City Thunder at Minnesota Timberwolves | ABC/ESPN 6 |
| Dec. 26, 10:30 | Denver Nuggets at Golden State Warriors | ABC/ESPN 6 |
The schedule gives several offseason questions a fixed date. Giannis Antetokounmpo will make his first Christmas appearance for Miami, while James is set to return to Los Angeles as a 76er. Golden State's late game also gives Curry's health a high-profile checkpoint, though December availability cannot be projected from an August statement. 6
Availability watch
No new player-specific injury, return or active/inactive update with a verified Aug. 11 timestamp is included today. The available reporting does establish a Warriors health watch around Butler, Moody, Porzingis, Horford, Melton and Curry, but those details describe the team's recent injury context rather than a new status change. 4
The next useful checkpoint is not a game but the season's first real test of the schedule's new broadcast strategy: Oct. 20's early Celtics–Pistons tip, followed by Knicks–76ers and Thunder–Spurs. Before then, Golden State's roster will be judged against the simpler question Dunleavy's comments leave open: how often can Curry actually play?
