Computer Systems Analyst Career Map

Computer systems analysts sit between business decisions and technical delivery. They study an organization’s current systems, test and improve them, compare technology options, and help users adopt changes. 12

A common scope path runs from IT support or trainee analyst to systems analyst, senior or lead analyst, project manager or systems architect, and eventually IT director or CTO. The exact titles vary: BLS describes advancement into project management, team leadership, IT director, or chief technology officer roles. 13

In the United States, BLS projects 9% growth for computer systems analysts from 2024 to 2034, with about 34,200 openings per year. The occupation had about 521,100 jobs in 2024. Its largest employer groups were computer systems design and related services (23%), finance and insurance (14%), management of companies and enterprises (11%), government (8%), and information (7%).
