AI Competition Radar: October 11–18, 2026

This week's scout radar: Intero Biosystems' $100,000 Startup Battlefield win, six Taipei demo-day startups that already sell into factories and clinics, the Riyadh and Cairo podiums, Bangkok's U-Hackathon, and the AI Infra Summit standings that finally landed.

Global AI Startup Competition Tracker
Global AI Startup Competition Tracker@NeoDrop Official
This edition covers results published between 11 and 18 October 2026, Pacific time. Five competitions named winners in that stretch. A Taipei demo day put six international startups in front of investors without naming a winner. Two rosters that had gone quiet finally produced names: the AI Infra Summit Hackathon, six weeks after its build closed, and one of the nine first prizes at Chengdu's global agent competition.

Startup Battlefield: a 2024 spinout selling mini intestines

TechCrunch ran Startup Battlefield inside Disrupt at Moscone Center in San Francisco from 13 to 15 October. Twenty companies from the Battlefield 200 pitched over three days across four categories: space and physical AI, energy and manufacturing, health tech and life sciences, and enterprise and security 1.
Intero Biosystems won the final on 15 October and took the Startup Battlefield Cup and $100,000, equity-free. Apate was runner-up. The other finalists were Flox Intelligence, Industrial Next and Satlyt. The five-person final panel was Alexa von Tobel of Inspired Capital, Chi-Hua Chien of Goodwater Capital, Dayna Grayson of Construct Capital, Karl Alomar of M13 and Stacy Brown-Philpot of Cherryrock Capital 2.
Intero is a Denver company spun out of the University of Michigan and founded in 2024. It grows human intestinal organoids — tissue about 1 millimetre across that carries several of the cell and tissue types found in a human gut — and ships them roughly 100 at a time in a tube. Its product, GastroScreen, goes to pharmaceutical, biotech, food and chemical companies that expose the tissue to compounds, or model a gut disease and watch how the tissue responds 3.
The company has seven employees and just under 10 customers, and raised a $2.3 million pre-seed round last year. Revenue from the fourth quarter of last year through the third quarter of this year came to more than $400,000, chief executive Charlie Childs told TechCrunch. Co-founder Madeline Eiken is chief technology officer 3.
GastroScreen sits in the second of three validation stages. Intero has shown the model contains the gut's key tissues and is now testing drugs with documented human effects; the third stage compares its results against drugmakers' animal and clinical data, and those studies are already running at several pharmaceutical companies. Intero builds its organoids through cell culture, and Childs plans to license the biological datasets they generate to pharmaceutical and AI companies 3.
Apate is an Australian company founded by Dali Kaafar out of his research at Macquarie University in Sydney. It deploys thousands of AI agents that pose as ordinary people — different ages, genders, accents and languages — to answer scam calls, reply to phishing messages, follow fraudulent links and join fraudsters' social media groups. Customers also get a portal that reports the scams aimed at their staff, customers and brands 2.
Flox Intelligence builds edge devices that identify wildlife with on-device models and play a species-specific sound to move animals off train lines, airport aprons and roads. Industrial Next sells robotic workstations whose vision, task context and motion planning run on the company's own models, which it says lets a line be retooled in minutes; some of its stations are already used in making a widely sold smartphone. Satlyt writes software that lets several satellites share one computing job, has flown it on two demonstration missions, and is working toward a shared computing cloud between two spacecraft 1.
Evidence status: Intero's employee, customer, funding and revenue figures come from its founders in a TechCrunch interview, and the company names no customer. The other descriptions are TechCrunch's, drawn from the companies' pitches. First diligence question: which companies make up the "just under 10" customers, and does a buyer need stage three finished before GastroScreen can support a regulatory filing?

Taipei AI+ Demo Day: six companies that already sell

The 2026 AI+ Startup Pitch Contest drew 76 startups from 17 countries, the programme's largest field. A judging panel from AppWorks, ASUS and Wistron cut that to six international teams, which joined five Taipei-based startups at the Taipei Entrepreneurs Hub's AI+ Demo Day on 16 October at InnoPad Taipei 4. The organisers named no overall winner; the prize for the six was the trip, the stage and matchmaking with Taipei manufacturers and investors 5.

For a pitch contest, the field skews late: a listed diagnostics company, a robotics software firm with a paid automotive pilot and a 2026 seed round, and two companies that name large industrial customers. The stage Taipei offered was access to its own manufacturers and investors, and most of these six arrive with paying or named customers already.
Evidence status: every figure is the company's own, published by the Taipei organiser before the demo day, and none is audited or independently reported. The five Taipei-based startups on the same stage were left unnamed. First diligence question: for IMBdx, how much of the Taiwan test volume runs through the TTY Biopharm partnership, and what does the AstraZeneca work cover?

AI Hackathon for People With Disabilities: five winners, no product detail

The King Salman Center for Disability Research ran the AI Hackathon for People With Disabilities alongside the 7th International Conference on Disability and Rehabilitation, at the King Faisal Conference Center in Riyadh from 11 to 13 October. Boeing Saudi Arabia was the strategic partner. Teams registered from 1 January, submitted a prototype, demo video, deck and impact report by 20 September, and the final evaluation and awards fell inside the conference 6.
The pool was 220,000 riyals across two categories and a special award, spread over four tracks: everyday life and assistive technology, health and rehabilitation, education and access to knowledge, and Hajj and Umrah services 6.
The winners were announced on 13 October. In companies and organisations, Deaf Link took first place and 75,000 riyals, with AZM Spark second and 50,000. In the individuals category, The Oriental Braille Project took first and 45,000, with THABT second and 30,000. IBSAR received the 20,000-riyal special award, reserved for winners who are themselves people with disabilities 7.
Evidence status: the organiser publishes team names and cash amounts, and no project description, team member, demo video or link. These five are names with a category and a cheque. First diligence question: ask for the 20 September submission package — the organiser required a prototype and demo video from every finalist and has published neither.

GenAI for Education Hackathon: two tracks in Cairo

Egypt University of Informatics ran the GenAI for Education Hackathon 2026 through its Entrepreneurship and Innovation Center, under the patronage of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology. Telecom Egypt's WE and WE Innovate were platinum sponsors, Intel was gold sponsor, and EdVentures, Keheilan and the Horizon Europe-funded GAINAfrica project were technical partners. The event ran two tracks — one for university students, one for registered edtech startups — across themes including AI tutoring, adaptive assessment, localised Arabic content and accessibility 8.
A thousand people registered, 228 teams entered and 32 reached the demo day. The prize pool was 450,000 Egyptian pounds 9.
In the student track, Hikaya from the German University in Cairo took first place and 80,000 pounds, then added the Best Arabic Solution award of 20,000. Kahrabba-Shafahi from October University for Modern Sciences and Arts took second and 60,000, and Play2Be from Egypt University of Informatics third and 40,000 9.
In the startup track, SKAYZ took first place and 120,000 pounds. NaFees AI—Anatomy Lab from Mansoura University took second and 80,000, and Dars edu by Aloegy third and 50,000; the organisers describe Dars edu as an Arabic-first AI voice tutor 9.
Evidence status: the results carry team names, institutions and amounts. Only Dars edu comes with a product description; Hikaya's product is described only through its Best Arabic Solution award. First diligence question: which startup-track entries are incorporated companies, and what does SKAYZ's business case claim?

U-Hackathon: two first places in Bangkok

U-topia, a self-custody payments company, held U-Hackathon inside its FLOW Summit at the Avani Sukhumvit in Bangkok on 15 and 16 October. More than 500 builders worked a 24-hour build in two tracks, artificial intelligence and Web3. ElevenLabs, Tokenomist AI and DTC Group sponsored the event, with Avalanche, Team1 Thailand, Yellow.com, ContributionDAO, CUBS Chula and Hooray in association. The organisers valued the combined awards above 2.5 million baht, including a 1 million baht core pool, partner bounties and technology credits 10.
U-Reach took first place in the AI track with a marketing, sales and customer-relationship platform. UBotPay, an AI payment agent for Web3, took first in the Web3 track. Three teams were recognised per track, and only the two first places were named.
Evidence status: this is U-topia's own release, issued as it opened a public beta in more than 50 countries. Each winner gets a single sentence, with no team members and no per-team amounts. First diligence question: what did U-Reach build in 24 hours that a sales team would pay for, and is anyone still working on it?

AI Infra Summit Hackathon: the standings finally arrived

The AI Infra Summit Hackathon ran online from 10 to 16 September and on site at the Santa Clara Convention Center from 15 to 17 September. It drew 3,018 participants on 616 teams and 163 submitted projects across tracks powered by Intel, Qualcomm, SiMa.ai and Speechmatics 11. The judging dashboard still read "judging in progress" when this radar checked a week ago. This week it carries final standings 12.
Ten Places: Bimanual VLA Table Setting, built by a single entrant under the team name SoloPlayer, took the champion slot. Two simulated SO-101 arms face each other across a randomised dinner table; a spoken instruction such as "set the table, but skip the cup" is transcribed by Speechmatics and turned into a five-skill plan by Qwen3-VL-4B, and one learned policy per skill drives both arms at 25 Hz. On tables never used for training it completed 183 of 200 place settings, with placement medians of 3 to 4 millimetres. The whole stack runs in OpenVINO on an Intel Core i5 13.
TrustGate Edge by team Techies placed second, and MISE: Multimodal Bimanual Physical AI by SeoulStack placed third 12.
Evidence status: the rankings are lablab.ai's; the champion's description is the entrant's own submission, with a public repository and demo. The platform publishes no judge comment and no cash figure. First diligence question: for Ten Places, is the repository a portfolio piece or the beginning of a company, and who buys two arms running on a desktop processor?

Roster update: one of Chengdu's nine first prizes has a name

The 2026 Global Agent Competition held its awards ceremony in Chengdu on 10 October, before this window opened. Mingtu Technology ran the contest, which drew more than 1,000 teams from over 180 universities across seven Chinese regions plus an overseas region covering New Zealand, and awarded nine first prizes without publishing a list 14.
On 16 October, Southwest Minzu University's newsroom named one of the nine. Five graduate students — Liao Yongbo, Qian Kangzhi, Liu Xiangrun, Zou Yuxin and Li Shuyu — took the Track A first prize for the southwest region with Shuyun Rongcheng Cultural Tourism Space, which applies agent technology to tourism sites in Chengdu 15.
Evidence status: the university names every student and the project, and the organiser has published no list for the other eight. First diligence question: is the team a company or a coursework group, and is anyone maintaining the project after the ceremony?

Result announced, roster not yet published

  • eMerge AI Hackathon (Miami AI Hub with eMerge Americas, The LAB Miami, 17 October). A one-day build with more than 400 registered builders across three tracks, with cash prizes from Miami-Dade County, Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, Archie, Millennium and Cognition. Winning teams were unpublished when this edition closed 16.
  • Taipei AI+ Demo Day (InnoPad Taipei, 16 October). The programme names the six international startups and leaves the five Taipei-based startups unnamed 5.
  • DevNetwork [API + Cloud + AI] Hackathon 2026 (Santa Clara and online, 17 August to 3 September). Six weeks after winners were announced on the API World main stage, the organiser's page still lists prize categories and a schedule, with no winning teams 17.

Dates to watch

  • 21 October — k-id's Build for Everyone hackathon brings 15 teams to Google San Francisco to build age-adaptive, globally compliant apps and games 18.
  • 3 November — winners of Monad's Metropolis hackathon, whose submissions closed on 13 October. The pool is $250,000 across four tracks, with a $25,000 grand champion 19.
  • 12 November — the PayPal AI Hackathon, run with Postman, Zapier and Elastic, closes with more than $60,000 in prizes 20.

Five teams to look at first

  1. Intero Biosystems (Startup Battlefield winner). Ask who the customers behind "just under 10" are, and which of them needs stage three validation finished before a regulatory filing.
  2. Apate (Startup Battlefield runner-up). Ask what it costs to keep thousands of decoy agents answering calls for a month, and what the intelligence portal changes for a bank's fraud team.
  3. Autonomique (Taipei AI+ Demo Day). Ask what the Tier-1 automotive pilot is worth, and what has to be true before it becomes a purchase order for a line.
  4. Hikaya (GenAI for Education Hackathon, student track). Ask whether the team is incorporating, and which Egyptian school, university or ministry has agreed to pilot.
  5. SoloPlayer / Ten Places (AI Infra Summit Hackathon champion). Ask whether the repository is a portfolio piece, and what the two-arm setup costs to run outside a simulator.
This radar runs weekly, on the results each window produces. The next issue covers 18 to 25 October 2026.
