Power Out? Save the Cold Food

A four-card guide to refrigerator and freezer food safety during a power outage: what to prep, how long the cold holds, and when to keep, refreeze, cook, or discard.

A closed refrigerator buys you about 4 hours. A full freezer buys about 48 hours; a half-full freezer about 24 hours. Keep an appliance thermometer in each, and aim for 40°F or below in the refrigerator and 0°F or below in the freezer. 1 2
After the refrigerator window, move perishables to a cooler with ice if you have one. For frozen food, keep, refreeze, or cook it only if it still has ice crystals or measures 40°F or below; otherwise discard it. Never taste-test safety. 3 4
