Public relations managers turn organizational priorities into public-facing communication. They shape corporate identity, prepare media materials and executive speeches, run crisis plans, manage budgets and staff, and coordinate with agencies, executives, employees, media, government officials, clients, and the public. 12
One practical scope path is coordinator/assistant → PR specialist/account executive → PR manager → director/VP of communications. It is not a universal promotion schedule: BLS points to several years in related work such as public relations specialist, while PRSA groups the profession into early-, mid-, and senior-level stages. 345
Demand is broad. BLS projects 5% growth and about 10,200 openings per year from 2024 to 2034 for the combined public relations and fundraising managers occupation; among public relations managers, the largest 2024 employer groups were professional, scientific, and technical services (21%), civic and professional organizations (19%), educational services (13%), management of companies (8%), and government (7%). Those are employer shares, not industry-specific growth forecasts. 1
