Lead deep dive
A glacier collapse on Wednesday morning sent rock, ice, mud and debris tearing through Himalayan river valleys on the Nepal–Tibet border, killing at least 359 people and leaving nearly 1,000 missing. The torrent followed a pilgrimage and trekking corridor that links Kathmandu with Lhasa. By Thursday evening, Nepal and China were still searching valleys and hillsides while warning that two new barrier lakes could burst. 1
Both governments say the lower part of a glacier near Nepal's Langtang Lirung peak broke off and cascaded into the valley. Chinese geologist Guo Zhaocheng put the debris flow at about 50 metres per second over more than 20 km. The U.S. Geological Survey first reported a magnitude-4.4 earthquake, then revised the reading: the seismic energy came from the glacial rock-and-ice collapse and the debris flow that followed. 1
The human corridor made the toll international. Of those missing in Nepal, at least 540 are foreigners from more than two dozen countries, including 288 from India, 63 from the United States, 51 from Malaysia, 34 from Australia, 33 from Britain and 25 from Canada. On the Chinese side, CCTV put Gyirong County's missing at 558, including 260 foreign nationals, with China's confirmed deaths still at three. Many victims were pilgrims bound for Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar in Tibet. 1
Gyirong's border-crossing complex, a Belt and Road logistics node, was destroyed. Helicopter footage showed the customs gate and surrounding buildings buried in mud. Chinese rescuers had still not reached the worst-hit point by Thursday evening while clearing the access road. In Nepal, the Red Cross said entire villages were gone and roads and bridges impassable. Chitwan district, about 100 km downstream, recovered 103 bodies. The United Nations said 796 people had been rescued and more than 30,000 security personnel mobilized. 12
The next test is hydrological, not only search-and-rescue. Nepal's disaster authority warned that debris blocking the Bhotekoshi River has formed a rising lake at risk of bursting. China said about 3 million cubic metres of water — roughly 1,200 Olympic pools — is expected to flow into an already dammed lake over three days, with peak breach risk around September 1. Scientists say Himalayan warming can weaken rock-and-ice slopes, while cautioning that climate change is not established as the sole immediate trigger. Watch survivor recoveries, the two lakes' water levels, and whether Gyirong's road reopens before the next monsoon pulse. 12
