Autumn dew falls on the banana leaves in a southern riverside garden. The courtyard is silent. A single round moon hangs in the jade sky, its cold light soaking into the stone flags. She thinks of him — at a northern frontier garrison somewhere beyond the frost grass — and wonders: is he lifting his head right now, looking at this same moon?
The moon does not divide them. It falls on two places at once: the rain-scented south and the sand-and-hoofbeat north. Mountains and rivers stand between them; the moon's clear radiance does not.
In the bridge the song steps across the distance into his world — beacon smoke dimming the flag, coat not yet removed, the cold garrison moon hanging like a blade above him. If I could ask the moon this night: can it carry my longing to you? The moon moves, but neither of them moves. Ten thousand li, one thread.
