Argentina’s 2–1 World Cup semifinal win over England ended with players holding a banner that read “Las Malvinas son Argentinas” (“The Falklands are Argentine”). The display has put a long-running sovereignty dispute back at the center of the X conversation, with UK officials calling for a FIFA investigation and Argentina’s vice president defending the message.
The live question is narrower than the whole territorial dispute: did a post-match political banner breach football rules, and should FIFA punish the players or team? FIFA is assessing the match reports; BBC Sport notes that Argentina cannot lose its place in Sunday’s final, and that sanctions would normally come after the tournament.
