3.5-Inch Floppy Disk — Object No. 011

Sony introduced the 3.5-inch floppy cartridge in 1981 through its Series 35 format. The rigid plastic shell and sliding metal shutter made a fragile magnetic disk easier to carry and handle. The original single-sided version stored 161.2 KB after formatting; later double-density and high-density versions reached 720 KB and 1.44 MB. 12

Early disks sold for about $5 each in 10-packs. Using the CPI-U index for January 1982 and July 2026, that price is roughly $18 in 2026 purchasing power. 34 Sony Japan ended floppy-disk sales in March 2011 after the format had given way to optical discs and flash storage. 5

The final card is an editorial reconstruction of a circa-1998 home computer desk: one file, one disk, one physical address.
