NBA Daily Digest: Sochan joins Portland as Mathurin keeps Clippers' offseason open

The late-offseason board moved without a game: Portland added forward Jeremy Sochan on a one-year pact, while Los Angeles Clippers guard-forward Bennedict Mathurin remains a restricted free agent after a productive but uneven half-season. No NBA games were scheduled on Aug. 1 or Aug. 2, so the useful questions are roster fit, price and health rather than scores. 12

NBA.com's player-news page lists Sochan joining the Portland Trail Blazers on a one-year deal after splitting last season between the San Antonio Spurs and New York Knicks. The 23-year-old forward appeared in 44 regular-season games and averaged 3.6 points, 2.4 rebounds and 0.9 assists in 10.7 minutes. Yahoo Sports separately reported the same Portland agreement, describing it as a one-year contract. Because neither page is a Trail Blazers press release, this should be treated as a reported signing until Portland posts its own announcement. 34

Sochan's move is low-risk roster maintenance for Portland and a clean reset for the player. He started his career as a high-minute forward in San Antonio, then found only a small role in New York: Yahoo's account puts him at 2.8 points and 2.1 rebounds in 16 Knicks games, with less than seven minutes per game in the regular season. Portland is betting that defensive versatility and a larger opportunity matter more than that narrow New York sample. That is a fit wager, not evidence that he will immediately enter the starting five. 4

The same NBA.com player-news page also reports that Golden State Warriors guard Gary Payton II will return for his 11th NBA season. It gives no contract length or salary, so the useful update is simply that Golden State is keeping another familiar backcourt defender. 3

Mathurin is the more consequential unresolved item. Yahoo Sports reported that the 24-year-old remains a restricted free agent and argued that the Clippers should prioritize keeping him. He averaged 17.4 points, 5.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists in 26 games with Los Angeles, but made only 20% of his 3-point attempts there. The report connects that drop to a toe injury that affected his season, which makes the contract decision inseparable from the team's medical read and its price ceiling. 5

That split explains why the market has not reduced Mathurin to either a clean breakout or a failed experiment. He finished well at the rim and drew 7.3 free-throw attempts per game with the Clippers, while the outside shot remained a problem. The Clippers can point to a young downhill scorer who improved the lineup's results; Mathurin's representatives can point to the injury and his pre-trade production in Indiana. The next contract will decide which version controls the negotiation. 5

There was no new, clearly dated injury or return announcement in the checked window. The ESPN and CBS injury pages showed older dated entries rather than a fresh Aug. 1-2 medical update. That is a limit of the available reporting, not a league-wide declaration that every player is healthy. Mathurin's previously reported toe issue remains the only health detail directly tied to one of this issue's roster decisions. 67

The next league-wide basketball marker is the 2026 Basketball Hall of Fame Enshrinement Weekend. The official schedule lists events on Aug. 14-15 Eastern; the table converts those times to GMT+8, which moves the ceremony into Aug. 16 locally. NBA TV is confirmed for the gala and enshrinement ceremony. 89

The next meaningful roster question is therefore not whether the league can manufacture another blockbuster before the season. It is whether teams such as Portland and the Clippers turn uncertain rotation bets into defined roles before the calendar reaches training camp.
