One royal-reporting Substack hit 100 paid. The honest shortlist has one.
Robert Jobson’s The Royal Editor is the one small Substack that cleared this week’s paid-milestone filter; the rejected candidates explain why strict subscriber evidence matters.
The short version
The verified count for July 8–August 7 is one. Robert Jobson’s The Royal Editor announced a Substack Bestseller on July 23, clearing the platform’s 100-paid-subscriber threshold. The publication also shows over 3,000 total subscribers, so it fits the channel’s size filter. 12
That is less than the requested three profiles. It is also the honest result. Three other recent Bestseller announcements failed the total-subscriber cap, while one under-cap candidate did not provide a readable milestone statement that proved it had crossed 100 paid. I would rather give you one usable case and a clean audit trail than turn “Bestseller” into a license to ignore the filter.
The business math remains simple: 500 paid readers at $10 a month is $60,000 in annual gross subscription revenue, before fees, taxes, refunds, and churn. Jobson’s case is useful because the moat is not a writing persona invented from scratch. It is decades of access to a narrow beat, packaged as a recurring paid room around live events, analysis, video, and a continuing memoir.
The one qualifying case: The Royal Editor
Positioning, authority, and numbers
The Royal Editor is a royal-reporting publication by Robert Jobson: a reader’s “ringside seat to the royals,” built around the British royal family and the correspondent’s accumulated access to that beat. The subscription page says Jobson has been called the “Godfather of Royal Reporting” by The Wall Street Journal, has spent 35 years in the field, and is a No. 1 Sunday Times and New York Times bestselling author. 3
The unfair advantage is unusually clear. A new writer can imitate the topic, but not the reporting history. Jobson’s pitch is effectively: I was present for the events that other people are now explaining. That gives the publication a defensible reason to exist even when the free internet is full of royal commentary.
The public subscription page displayed over 3,000 subscribers. The July 23 milestone post is titled “We are now a Substack ‘New Bestseller’” and thanks subscribers for making it happen. The page data associated with the publication identifies the badge as the 100 tier and describes the audience as “hundreds of paid subscribers.” The exact paid count is not public, so the safe claim is at least 100 paid, exact number undisclosed. 14
That distinction matters. “Over 3,000 total” is not 3,000 free readers. “Hundreds paid” is not an exact conversion rate. A practitioner copying this model should publish the numbers they actually know, not reverse-engineer a flattering percentage from rounded public labels.
Price and product design
The current public page data exposed a monthly plan at $11 and an annual plan at $110. Older plan nicknames also appeared in the page source at $8 a month and $80 a year, so this is a page-state observation rather than a dashboard-level pricing history. Use the active-looking $11/$110 figures as the current public offer, and treat the older values as unresolved metadata rather than silently blending them into the story. 5
The free offer is thin: “Occasional Posts.” Paid subscribers get the full archive, subscriber-only analysis, the memoir Walking with Kings published in instalments, comments and community access, all video, comment threads, and bi-monthly paid-subscriber Q&A sessions. 5
This is a sharp free-versus-paid cut for a live news beat. Free readers get enough public material to recognize the author and sample his judgment. Paid readers are buying continuity and access: the archive, the story behind the byline, live video, and a recurring chance to ask questions. The paywall is not simply hiding longer versions of the same post. It bundles several reasons to remain subscribed after the news cycle moves on.
Cadence and typical length
The archive shows a near-daily rhythm in the period around the milestone: posts on July 27, 28, 30, 31, August 1, 2, and 4, with multiple items on some days. The feed mixes short written dispatches, event-driven royal news, memoir chapters, and live video. One “Live with Robert Jobson” recording runs 48:49; written word counts are not disclosed. 6
That cadence is not a universal prescription. It works here because royal news supplies a stream of prompts and Jobson can respond from a specialist position. A civil engineer cannot copy “post every day” unless the field generates enough meaningful changes. The transferable unit is a repeatable beat, not the volume.
The conversion lever: a paid room around a live beat
The public record does not identify one article that caused the jump to Bestseller. Jobson’s milestone post says only, “Thanks to all my subscribers. You made this happen.” 1
The observable lever is the product bundle: frequent dispatches while the beat is moving, plus paid-only analysis, video, an archive, an instalment-based memoir, and scheduled Q&As. The July 23 announcement then adds a small social-proof loop. It tells an undecided reader that other people are already paying for this particular access point.
That is a more defensible conclusion than claiming the milestone came from a specific royal story. The conversion trigger is undisclosed; the offer mechanics are visible. For a specialist, the question is not “What viral post can I copy?” It is “What recurring event gives my expertise a reason to arrive in someone’s inbox, and what durable paid layer remains useful after that event passes?”
Who could clone it
A regional transport reporter could build a paid briefing around one transit authority’s decisions. A practicing employment lawyer could cover one state’s workplace rules with live explainers, archived case notes, and monthly office hours. A hospital procurement specialist could publish the operational consequences of new devices, contracts, or reimbursement rules.
The clone should keep the beat narrow and make the paid room concrete. Free readers might receive the public event and the author’s first interpretation. Paid readers could receive the document trail, what changed since last time, a practical checklist, and a scheduled Q&A. Authority comes from being close to the work; conversion comes from defining what the paying reader gets that a general search does not provide.
Why the shortlist stopped at one
The filter rejected several tempting names for reasons that are useful in themselves.
- Climate Ages announced that it had become a Substack Bestseller on July 27, with a strong specialist premise: paleontology, ecology, and climate change explained through Earth’s deep past. Its subscription page, however, showed over 12,000 subscribers, more than twice the channel’s 5,000 ceiling. 78
- Notes to Recipes by Ben Slater announced a Bestseller on August 4. The editorial model is excellent: a London-based recipe developer says 99% of the newsletter is paid, with each weekly issue moving from notes and observations to a recipe designed to be cooked repeatedly. But the subscription page showed over 8,000 subscribers, so it fails the size cap. 91011
- ah.mi health is the more frustrating near-miss. Its page showed over 2,000 subscribers, and the publication has a plausible founder-led wellness offer. But the accessible milestone page exposed a video shell and transcript interface without a clear statement that the publication had actually crossed the 100-paid threshold. That is not enough to promote it into the verified count. 1415
The lesson is uncomfortable but useful: a Bestseller announcement alone is not sufficient. The total-subscriber ceiling still matters, and a page that cannot be read clearly is not evidence just because its title sounds promising.
Three adjacent niches worth testing
These are gap hypotheses, not a census. The point is to find professional communities with recurring, expensive decisions and ask whether a solo operator could translate them into a narrow paid briefing. I have not proved that no competing newsletter exists.
Museum registrars and collections specialists
The Association of Registrars and Collections Specialists says its mission is to represent and promote registrars and collection specialists, educate the profession in registration and collections-care best practices, and facilitate communication and networking. Its affinity groups focus on professional development, shared problems, and collaborative solutions. 16
That suggests a possible product for a former registrar: free case notes on loans, provenance, rights, and collection moves; paid templates, decision checklists, and post-mortems on difficult transfers. The moat would be operational fluency, not museum celebrity.
Railway train control and signaling
UIC describes itself as the worldwide professional association for the railway sector and lists signaling, safety, infrastructure, and operations among its focus areas. A University of Wisconsin professional course breaks the subject into track circuits, interlockings, traffic control, Positive Train Control, regulatory context, and design maintenance. 1718
A solo signaling engineer could turn that complexity into a weekly “what changed in the standard, project, or failure investigation” briefing. Free posts could explain one system diagram. Paid posts could include regulatory comparisons, procurement questions, and maintenance lessons. The reader is not buying personality; they are buying translation across engineering, safety, and operations.
Estate administration for executors and fiduciaries
The IRS describes an estate administrator as the legal representative of a deceased person and lists recurring work such as collecting assets, paying creditors, distributing property, preparing accountings, and filing separate tax returns for the deceased and the estate. 19
That is a large, stressful workflow hiding inside a broad legal category. A practitioner could publish free explanations of the process and paid state-specific calendars, document checklists, and “what goes wrong next” case notes. The trust boundary would be explicit: education and workflow support, not individualized legal or tax advice.
The common thread is the same one Jobson makes visible. A small paid publication does not need a mass-market subject. It needs a narrow recurring problem, an author close enough to see the details, and a paid layer that saves the reader time after the free post has shown them how that person thinks.
This week’s verified case is one. That is not a failure of the model. It is a reminder that the filter is part of the product.
