Connected-car ghosts: kill the $49.99 hands-free plan and the $25.99 radio renewal

A 13-month audit for finding forgotten SiriusXM, OnStar, Ford BlueCruise, Toyota and Tesla charges on your car, reading which trial clock started on the purchase date, and cancelling on the rail that owns the billing.

Zombie Subscription Autopsy
Zombie Subscription Autopsy@Madison Brooks
Ford charges $49.99 a month for BlueCruise, the hands-free highway driving it puts in some F-150s and Mustang Mach-Es. Paid a year at a time, the same plan is $495 1. SiriusXM's All Access plan costs $1 for three months and then $25.99 a month 2. OnStar's Super Cruise tier is $39.99 a month, with Protect at $29.99 and Connect Plus at $24.99 3.
One car can carry all four. A GM vehicle with Super Cruise, Protect, Connect Plus and All Access bills $120.96 a month, or $1,451.52 a year, for software inside a car that was paid for once. A Toyota with Premium at $15, Wi-Fi Connect at $25 and All Access at $25.99 bills $791.88 a year 4.
These charges arrive with the car. The account gets opened at the dealership or in the first week of ownership, on a phone, in a hurry, and the card attached to it is the one you use for everything.
The category has a shape of its own. The seller, the biller and the company you would call are often three different businesses, and the clock on the free trial started on the day the car was sold.

What the money adds up to

CNET's 2026 State of Subscriptions surveyed 2,522 US adults through YouGov, with fieldwork from April 29 to May 1, 2026 and publication on July 6. Average subscription spending came to $111 a month, or $1,332 a year. The average adult put $21 a month, or $252 a year, on subscriptions they were not using, against $17 a month in 2025 5.
The wider gap sits between what people think they pay and what they pay. C+R Research asked 1,000 US consumers between April 22 and May 2, 2022 to estimate their monthly subscription spending, then itemize it. Estimates averaged $86; itemized totals averaged $219. Seventy-four percent said recurring charges were easy to forget, 42 percent had kept paying for a service they had stopped using, and 72 percent had everything on auto-pay 6.
Car subscriptions fill that gap more efficiently than most. A car subscription arrives switched on, its price is quoted once, and it renews on an anniversary that never makes it onto a calendar.

Why these charges outlive the trial

The clock starts on the purchase date. Toyota states the rule plainly: all trials begin on the original purchase or lease date of the new vehicle, with Wi-Fi the single exception, which begins at activation 7. Ford writes the same rule for used cars, where 90-day trials cover BlueCruise, the Connectivity Package, Connected Navigation and other services: trial timing begins from the time of purchase, and activation does nothing to start it 8.
That rule pulls the deadline forward for anyone who bought used. A car sold in March can hand you a trial that has been running since March, whether or not anyone ever opened the app.
A plan bought during a trial starts later, on its own. OnStar's help pages say the quiet part: if you are in your trial period, your paid service plan will begin once your trial ends 9. Toyota calls the same arrangement future-pay. A Go Anywhere plan bought while both Drive Connect and Remote Connect trials are live starts when those trials expire; a Music Lover plan bought on the same day starts immediately 7.
One car carries several accounts. Each company keeps its own login, its own card and its own renewal date. Toyota is the clearest case, because Remote Connect comes inside every one of its plans, so a single cancellation removes remote start, remote climate, door unlock, vehicle status and guest-driver alerts at once 4.
The statement line names the biller. SiriusXM tells readers to check the bank or card statement when they do not know who sold them the subscription, because its subscriptions are sold through several providers 10. A SiriusXM subscription billed by T-Mobile has to be removed through T-Mobile's manage-add-ons page, and Toyota's Wi-Fi Connect is run by AT&T 4.
Prices move without a decision. SiriusXM raised standard rates on February 24, 2026 across All Access, All Music, Platinum and most streaming plans. Promotional rates were untouched, and new rates land at the next renewal on or after that date 11. Its customer agreement gives the reader the counterweight: if you do not accept a price change, you may cancel before it takes effect 12. Tesla offers one month's notice before changing a subscription price 13.
Some trials genuinely stop. SiriusXM subscriptions included with the purchase or lease of a vehicle do not auto-renew; they end when the term ends or when the car is sold, whichever comes first, and they are not transferable or refundable 12. OnStar says a trial that is not converted simply ends, and eligible paid services do not continue after it 9.
That answer is worth having before the audit. A dealer-included radio trial is a countdown; a dealer-arranged SiriusXM plan with a card on file is a subscription.

The 13-month statement audit

Pull 13 months of card and bank statements. Thirteen, because an annual plan and the purchase or lease rarely land in the same calendar year, and because this category's annual terms are the expensive ones.
Search these strings: SIRIUSXM, SIRIUS XM, ONSTAR, FORD, TOYOTA, HYUNDAI, BLUELINK, KIA, TESLA, and the two carriers that bill on other companies' behalf, T-MOBILE and AT&T.
The statement is the weaker half of the audit here, and it is worth saying why. None of these companies publishes the string that appears on your statement. What they publish is where the record lives, and the record is what settles which plan a charge belongs to.
BrandStrings to searchWhere the record lives

FordFORDThe Ford app's Connected Services tile shows the plan, its status and the start date of the plan or trial, and the owner account carries the same list 8

KiaKIAThe Kia owner portal, where the plan list separates the complimentary Lite tier from the three paid ones 15
Two more places worth checking before you call anyone. Amazon's published charge strings cover marketplace and digital purchases bought there 16. Apple's subscription list lives under Settings, your name, Subscriptions, and a SiriusXM subscription bought in the iOS app is billed by Apple there 17.

The four rails

Settle who owns the charge before you attempt a cancellation, because the wrong rail produces a cancelled plan that keeps billing.
The automaker. Ford, Toyota, Tesla, Hyundai, Kia and GM each run their own subscription billing, and each publishes an account page that lists its plans. This is where a subscription bought directly gets cancelled.
The dealer, at the point of sale. Ford sells BlueCruise as a one-time $2,495 purchase at vehicle purchase from a dealer 1. Toyota's connected-services trial offering is a pre-purchased option covering up to three years of Drive Connect and Remote Connect at a discount on the monthly rate 7. SiriusXM plans can come included with a vehicle purchase, and those are governed by the automaker's sale terms as well as SiriusXM's 12.
The phone company. T-Mobile bills SiriusXM to its postpaid wireless customers, who must cancel inside the T-Mobile account under Manage add-ons, either on the web or in the app 10. Toyota's Wi-Fi Connect is connected by AT&T, the provider its plan page names 4.
The app store or the device. A SiriusXM subscription bought in the iOS app is billed by Apple, one bought in the Android app is billed by Google Play, and one bought on a Roku is billed by Roku and can only be cancelled at my.roku.com, never inside the SiriusXM app 10.
PayPal sits under all four. An automatic payment can be viewed and cancelled at Settings, Payments, Subscriptions and saved businesses 18. OnStar accepts PayPal for plans and add-ons, with in-vehicle data plans excluded 19.

The kill drill, company by company

SiriusXM

Price. All Music is $1 for three months, then $11.99 a month. All Access is $1 for three months, then $25.99 a month. Streaming-only All Access runs the same $1 and then $11.99. Add-ons cost $8 a month for sports and $5 each for news and talk. A new activation carries a $15 fee 220.
The offer worth watching is the bundle: $98.98 for the first year of All Access, then the plan renews monthly at $25.99 20.
What stops working. The service ends at the end of the paid period. SiriusXM also reserves the right to switch an inactive radio back on with its ad-supported Free Access Plan after a trial or paid subscription ends, unless you write to its Detroit address and opt out 12.
The path. Two SiriusXM pages describe this, and they disagree. The help centre sends you to the Subscriptions tab in the Online Account Center, or to chat, or to 866-635-8641 10. The customer agreement says direct-billed audio subscriptions cancel by phone at 1-866-635-2349, open 8am to 8pm ET daily, or by online chat, open 24 hours; online self-service cancellation in the account is described for streaming-only subscriptions 12.
The traps. The 24-hour rule governs everything: cancel at least 24 hours before the renewal date, or you are renewed and charged 12. Uninstalling the app, selling the car or not using the service cancels nothing, and cancelling one subscription on an account leaves the others running.
The refund. Audio subscriptions are non-refundable in principle, with two openings. A monthly-billed plan cancelled within seven days of its start is eligible for a pro-rata refund if you ask; that right does not repeat at later monthly renewals. A quarterly or annual plan cancelled within 30 days of the start, or of each renewal charge, is eligible for a pro-rata refund if you ask 12.
The counter-script. Use chat, which runs around the clock while the phone line does not, and save the transcript as your cancellation record. When a retention offer comes, ask two questions before saying yes: what the price becomes when the offer ends, and what date that is. SiriusXM says any refund or credit outside its published terms is an accommodation at its sole discretion, which tells you what an offer is worth in writing 12.

OnStar

Price. Connect is $14.99 a month, Connect Plus $24.99, Protect $29.99 and Super Cruise $39.99 3.
What stops working. The paid services end. OnStar says plainly that vehicles from model year 2025 on keep core features for eight years: automatic crash response, remote commands, center-display audio apps, the voice assistant and navigation 3.
The path. OnStar's cancellation page gives three steps: log in to My Account and select OnStar, open My Plans and pick the plan, then review and click "cancel my plan". The same page offers the blue button in the car and 1.888.466.7827 9.
The traps. OnStar's payment FAQ ends its refund answer with a sentence that contradicts that page: cancelling service cannot be done online 19. Treat the phone as the route that always exists. No refund is available for prepaid plans or for plans that came with the purchase or lease of the vehicle, and the remaining term stays usable 9. Services run to the end of the billing period.
The refund. Members who are eligible receive a prorated refund for charges made within the previous 30 days 19.
The counter-script. Open the cancellation page's three steps before you dial, and read them out. Then ask the advisor for the plan name, the end date and a cancellation confirmation number, and ask where that confirmation is stored in the account.

Ford BlueCruise

Price. $49.99 a month, $495 a year, or $2,495 once at vehicle purchase from a dealer. Ford notes that pricing is subject to change 1.
What stops working. Hands-free highway driving, and the hardware stays in the car. Ford requires an active plan after any trial ends, and BlueCruise plans are nontransferable to a new vehicle 1.
The path. In the Ford app: Account icon, Connected Services tile, scroll to the BlueCruise feature, Cancel Service, then Yes. On the web: My Account, Account, Connected Services, the same BlueCruise line, Cancel Service, Yes 21.
The traps. Many Ford Connected Services auto-renew, and Ford says it will tell you before the card is charged 8. A used-car trial runs for 90 days from the date of purchase, which is when Ford starts counting it 8.
The refund. Cancel within 14 days of order confirmation and the service ends immediately with a refund. After 14 days the plan is non-refundable and runs to the end of the billing period. One refund per customer, total 21.
The counter-script. Frame the two weeks. If you bought a month to test hands-free driving on a specific trip, the decision date is 14 days after the order confirmation, and the refund ends the service that day rather than at month end. Take a screenshot of the confirmation screen after the second Yes.

Toyota

Price. Remote Connect is $8 a month, Premium $15, and Wi-Fi Connect $25. Premium bundles Drive Connect, unlimited Integrated Streaming and Remote Connect; Remote Connect comes inside every plan 4.
What stops working. Remote start, remote climate, door lock and unlock, vehicle status, guest-driver alerts and smartwatch control; on Premium, cloud navigation, live-agent destinations and the voice assistant; the Wi-Fi hotspot separately. Selling the car hands any trial time left to the next owner 7.
The path. In the Toyota app, tap the image of your vehicle, open the Subscriptions tile, select the current plan, click Cancel, then Cancel All Subscriptions. Or call 1-800-331-4331 and follow the prompts for Connected Services 7.
The traps. Individual trial cancellation is not supported, and one cancellation takes every trial with it. Waiving or cancelling early earns no refund. Removing the vehicle from the app cancels active trials and wipes the multimedia system's saved driver profiles along with cloud features. Trials start on the purchase or lease date, except Wi-Fi 722.
The refund. None on a waived or early-cancelled trial, and Toyota points to its Terms of Use for the rest 7.
The counter-script. Decide what you want to keep before you open the Subscriptions tile, because the flow is all or nothing. If you want Drive Connect after the trial but not remote start, Toyota's plan structure does not offer that combination; Premium includes both, so the choice is the whole plan or none 4.

Tesla

Price. Full Self-Driving is $99 a month, the figure CNET reported in July 2026 5. Premium Connectivity stood at $9.99 a month or $99 a year when CNET covered Tesla's connectivity change in July 2022 23.
What stops working. The data-heavy features. Standard Connectivity was included for eight years on cars ordered after July 20, 2022, and a used buyer is told how much of that period is left 23.
The path. The subscription agreement says you can cancel at any time through your Tesla Account. It names no other channel 13.
The traps. No proration. Cancel mid-month and the payment already taken stays with Tesla. The agreement also carries an arbitration clause with a class-action waiver, and a 30-day window to opt out by letter to Tesla's Fremont address 13.
The refund. None. The agreement states that a cancelled subscription payment is not prorated 13.
The counter-script. Cancel the day before the renewal date, never inside the month you have paid for. If you may want a court rather than an arbitrator later, post the opt-out letter inside 30 days of subscribing, while the receipt is still in your inbox.

The exit arithmetic

Every window in this category is short, and the shortest ones belong to the plans that cost most.
SiriusXM refunds a monthly plan only inside seven days, and a quarterly or annual plan inside 30 12. Ford refunds BlueCruise inside 14 days, once per customer, ever 21. OnStar pays a prorated refund for charges in the previous 30 days to members who qualify 19. Toyota gives nothing back on a trial you waive, and Tesla prorates nothing at all 713.
SiriusXM offers a middle option that keeps the account alive: it will suspend a subscription once in any calendar year for up to six months, reactivating it on the date you choose or at the six-month mark, whichever comes first. A suspension inside a promotional period does not extend the promotion, and suspension requests cannot be made online; the help page gives 866-635-8642 24.
For a car radio that only matters in summer, a suspension costs less than a cancellation and keeps the account.

If the charge already posted

Stop the payments. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau says you can withdraw permission for automatic payments after granting it. Call the company, then follow up in writing; call the bank or credit union to revoke the authorization, and follow that in writing too. Once both sides have it in writing, later payments are errors the bank can be asked to refund 25.
Dispute the charge. On a credit card, call the card company and send a written billing error notice within 60 calendar days of the charge appearing on the statement. The card company then has 30 days to acknowledge the dispute in writing 26.
Keep the record the FTC describes. Its consumer guidance on free trials and auto-renewals asks readers to keep a copy of the cancellation request and notes of any conversation about cancelling, then watch the statement for charges that arrive afterwards. If the company keeps charging, file a dispute, follow up by letter and use certified mail with a return receipt so the record shows what arrived 27.
The same guidance describes the mechanism behind this category: a negative option is a business treating your silence as permission to charge you, and the problems start when the business does not clearly explain that it will keep billing, or makes cancelling difficult 27.
What the law gives you. 15 U.S.C. § 8403 makes it unlawful to charge a consumer through a negative option on the internet unless the seller discloses all material terms before taking billing details, obtains express informed consent before the charge, and offers a simple mechanism to stop recurring charges 28.
The FTC's 2024 amended Negative Option Rule, which would have reached auto-renewals across all media, was vacated by the Eighth Circuit on July 8, 2025. The FTC opened a new rulemaking on March 13, 2026, with comments closed on April 13, 2026 29. The rule still on the books, 16 CFR Part 425, covers prenotification plans for the sale of goods, and the vacatur reinstated the version first promulgated in 1973 2930.
That third requirement in § 8403 is the sentence to have ready when a cancellation flow has no ending, or when a plan cancelled on one page keeps billing from another.

The prevention gate

Write down the purchase date. Toyota and Ford both start the clock at purchase. For a used car, ask the dealer for the in-service date before you sign, because the trial may already be running.
Buy monthly while you are still deciding. Every plan here offers a monthly rate, and the annual rates front-load a year of exposure against refund windows of 14 to 30 days.
Treat a plan bought during a trial as a commitment. OnStar and Toyota both queue a purchased plan to start when the trial expires, which makes looking at the price a decision about the price.
Strip the card once the trial is running, where the account allows it. Where it does not, put the plan on a virtual card with a spend limit and a merchant lock, so the next renewal cannot post, then close the card 31.
Check the free tier you may already own. Kia's Lite package is complimentary for up to seven years and includes 911 Connect, digital key, vehicle status and charge management 15. Hyundai's Bluelink+ costs the original owner nothing on a 2023 IONIQ 6 or any 2024-or-newer Bluelink-equipped model, which Hyundai prices at a saving of up to $350 or more a year 32. OnStar keeps core features for eight years on 2025-and-newer vehicles 3.
Hyundai's $350 figure checks out against its own older-model pricing: three packages at $9.90 a month is $356.40 a year 14.
Price a dealer's pre-paid term against the monthly rate. Toyota's trial offering sells up to three years of Drive Connect and Remote Connect at a discount 7. Three years of a car subscription outlives many loans, and it is paid on the day you are least willing to read a term sheet.

The kill list

  1. Pull 13 months of statements and search the eleven strings above.
  2. For every hit, open the account page in the table and write down the plan name, the price and the next renewal date.
  3. For each plan, ask who bills it: automaker, dealer, phone company, app store, or PayPal.
  4. Check the trial start date against the purchase date, and check whether a plan is queued to start when a trial ends.
  5. Decide per plan, using what stops working as the price of keeping it.
  6. Cancel on the rail that owns the charge, inside the refund window, and keep the confirmation.
  7. Put the next renewal date, and the purchase anniversary, on the calendar for next year.
