In 1975, NASA launched Viking 1 from Cape Canaveral on a mission designed to reach Mars and investigate the possibility of life there. The spacecraft touched down successfully the following year, becoming the first truly successful Mars landing. 1

On the night of August 20–21, 1968, Warsaw Pact forces invaded Czechoslovakia to halt the Prague Spring, a reform movement that had loosened censorship and expanded public freedoms. The invasion killed 137 Czechoslovaks and helped usher in the period known as “Normalization.” 2

In 2018, fifteen-year-old Greta Thunberg began a solitary school strike outside Sweden’s parliament in Stockholm. Her protest helped give rise to Fridays for Future, which soon became a decentralized international movement. 34
